The Horizon, they called it. Lovino only scoffed, scuffing his shoe across the material. As caked with mud and dirt as it was, seeing down into the darkness that contained the crumbling, abandoned streets of Rome—houses and fountains still intact—was like staring through murky water. A museum within a city, empty and buried under layers, like something shoved into storage to collect dust. If anything, it reminded Lovino of Hisarlik, a city built on the ruins of layers of fallen cities.

Bittersweet, as promised in the author’s notes. I love the world they constructed here, you can almost feel the dust on your skin and breath history as you follow Lovino into the older depths of the city! You can feel the love the nations have for their territory and how they have to resignate to the flow of time and people. Being ‘expressions’ leaves them with barely any control of their own faith in the universe depicted here and it’s heart-wrenching to see how things can fall apart so easily.

In other words, this is another marvelous work by Afflitto, the first author that got me into this pairing with their adventure story “Greater than the Sum.” They know how to bring a story with such substance and where the world around the characters becomes its own character, something I appreciate immensely. It’s sad when people let the background water down so much after introducing it with so much care. No worries here though, the background is ever present and argueably one of the main characters.

Definitely give this one a read!!
