If someone were to ask me which one of our kings was the best, I would pick either D. Afonso Henriques or João I (Master of Avis), both were BAMFs, but ultimately, I would choose Afonso.

Our first king, founding father, went against his own mother, told both his cousin, the King of Castille, and the Vatican to shove it, got most of Portugal’s territory (and possibly switched at birth?).

Today Portugal is officially 840 years old

Manifestis Probatum (also known as Manifestus Probatum) was a papal bull dated May 23, 1179, in which Pope Alexander III officially recognized Portugal as an independent kingdom and Afonso Henriques as the first King of Portugal.

Óbidos est le Carcassonne ou le Rothenburg portugais, quoiqu’il y ait d’autres cités au Portugal pouvant valoir la comparaison. La ville fortifiée est à 17 km de Peniche, un aller-retour facile en bus. Déjà en mars, les touristes abondent, notamment japonais, en groupe compact derrière leur guide.

Les Celtes, les Phéniciens, les Romains (oppidum – citadelle – Óbidos), les Wisigoths, les Arabes se sont succédé sur cette colline, et finalement les Portugais avec Afonso Henriques, leur premier roi, en 1148. L’endroit donnait autrefois sur la mer, par la lagune d’Óbidos, maintenant inaccessible.

Le château abrite une pousada (auberge/hôtel de luxe) et l’église centrale une librairie !
