I’m sad to learn of the passing of the Zimbabwean music legend and human rights activist #OliverMtukudzi. We spent a month on the road together in the summer of 1999 when I was producing the #AfricaFete tour. To his friends and fans he was known as #Tuku. One night we got into talking about #BobMarley and his legendary 1980 performance when the British colonizers left what was then Rhodesia and became a liberated Zimbabwe. I asked Tuku where he was, thinking he was going to say ‘I was in the audience dancing’ but he responded ‘I was there in front of a sea of people. I was there on stage performing with my band before Bob’! I’d like to give a shout out to Putumayo World Music for having the vision to release the album Tuku Music in 1999, it introduced Oliver’s music to an international market. Those were good days... Now, what’s going to happen to Oliver’s 67 albums! RIP #TUKU, you will be missed. The photo was taken in 2014 at the #WOMAD Festival in the UK.
