It's been an intense week, but here I finally come with this finished Mads#Mikkelsen (which in my head looks like a possible version of ##Hannibal after the fall, when he tries to look less fancy and clean shaven than usual <: )
I hope you like it 💙

my piece for the After The Fall: Murder Drones Fanzine!!
The modern counterparts to the last post of pre-fall Angel and demon!
Honestly, Carmine Esclados is WAY too interesting of an antagonist to have remained only in the side novels, so I hope we see more of her, even just in flashbacks, during Volume 10.
Like, quick reminder of what we know of her: she went to Shade Academy with the Asturias siblings, she was genuinely, fanatically loyal to Gillian and wanted to put her in charge of the whole kingdom, despite coming off as nice and charming she is RUTHLESSLY willing to use and mistreat and discard others (the human trafficking and kidnapping and all that). And she was born in Atlas.
That last bit is the most interesting to me, especially because it’s clear that Vacuans and Atlesians butting heads is gonna be a major plot point in Volume 10. And Carmine Esclados is in many ways a microcosm for it all.
Carmine is someone born Atlesian, who (like Weiss or Ilia) fled that repressive elitist climate, and then (unlike Weiss and like Ilia at first) fell in with a different kind of terrible people and adopted their values. Because re:the Asturias siblings and their quest to rule Vacuo…there’s sincere faith in their mission, sure, but also just entitlement and self-superiority.
Meaning…despite all Carmine’s talk about wanting to grow beyond Atlas and not just be a piece in their machine, she ultimately acted exactly like the most elitist, entitled Atlesians. Exactly like the most rabidly loyal Atlas military soldier.
Carmine supported Gillian Asturias and her would-be Orwellian absolute monarchy, rather than James Ironwood and his fascist military dictatorship. But the end result is the exact same. She’s trampling on and exploiting the most vulnerable and powerless, uplifting those who already have power, coopting the strength of others for her own ends.
Carmine’s color scheme is red, blue, white, silver and black. I don’t think it’s an accident that she’s still wearing Atlesian colors.
She’s doing what Atlas (Mantle) did to Vacuo the first time — colonizing it, bleeding it dry resources and hope, in the name of some nebulous greater good. It doesn’t matter that the Asturias twins are native Vacuans — they’re trying to destroy democracy, and also are pretenders to the throne anyway. (I think it was Coco who said their crown birthmark just looks like a brand.)
And that’s sad, for Carmine and Atlas and everyone in Vacuo, but damn if it isn’t also compelling as shit.
