In just a few shorts weeks, Netflix will present its next documentary series, Abstract: The Art of Design. Similar to their already successful Chef’s Table, Abstract will take us into the lives of several designers and some of their most successful projects:

The eight-episode series will focus on eight designers from different disciplines: Graphic design, illustration, photography, architecture, interior design, set design, shoe design and automobile design. There are some pretty huge names in each category, perhaps most notable being the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels (think Via 57 West), Nike's Tinker Hatfield (think Air Jordans and Mags) and Fiat Chrysler's head of design Ralph Gilles (many, many cars).

Really looking forward to my next Netflix binge session.

Danielle Evans takes “playing with your food” to a whole new level with her stunning food typography treatments. In 2013, she brought her love for type, design and photography into this amazing art form.  Her work inspires me to think outside the box, not only when it comes to typography but the with the kind of materials you can use in a project. I stumbled upon this image in my facebook feed the other day and instantly clicked on the article it was attached to, because all the feels came back from my elementary school days. I drew this ‘S’ all over my notebook covers, my worksheets and sketchbooks, and I felt so cool doing it!  Have you ever wondered where the heck this ‘S’ came from? The Opening Ceremony for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang was quite the sight. The projection mapping was extremely detailed and, of course, beautiful, but what I enjoyed most were the massive animal puppets. The theatrical storytelling and intricate and lifelike puppets were all thanks to a Brooklyn puppet designer named Nicholas Mahon.

Mahon’s role was to oversee the fabrication and construction of the puppets while providing artistic guidance into their movements.

The official portraits of the Obama’s have been revealed!

Kehinde Wiley is responsible for the 44th president‘s leafy aesthetic, while Amy Sherald created a unique depiction of Michelle Obama, complete with a geometric patterned gown.

Decor, not Decoration 

Shapeup lamps by Ladies and Gentleman Studio premiered at Sight Unseen New York.

L&G are sure to be part of the post modern revival. Their exquisite work embraces a sophisticated balance between playful forms and fine finishes, highlighting what separates a piece that is  “Designed” vs. “Made” and “Decor” from “Decoration”

James Turrell is an American artist who’s work explores the perception of light, color, and space, creating an experience that exposes the use of light as a tangible substance. His exhibitions have been featured all over the world, some major museums across the nation like, the LACMA in Los Angeles, The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Guggenheim in New York. His installations truly transform the space, making each exhibit unique to its location. We have our very own here in Chicago called the UIC Skyspace, an open observatory on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago. You can see more of his work here!
