The Prom (an ARC Ficlet)

Senior prom feels a little surreal to Ruby.

Having her parents chaperone might have been embarrassing to anyone else, but Ruby’s glad her moms are there. Her eyes flicker towards the drink table, where Lena ladles punch into plastic cups. She’s already clocked Alex several times at various points around the ballroom, prowling for troublemakers. Ruby scans the room for her mother, and spots her chatting with another chaperone.

“You okay?” Bridget asks from the seat beside her.

Ruby turns her head to gaze at her girlfriend, and smiles. Bridget looks amazing—her red hair glints in the colored spotlights that travel lazily around the hall, and her eyeshadow glitters a little to match the sparkle of her blue dress. Something in Ruby’s belly melts a little, looking at her.

“Yeah,” Ruby confirms. “Everything’s good.”

She can’t say she isn’t on alert—her life has been limned with danger long enough to know that nights like this is when chaos is most likely to strike, and having her entire family in one location is both a worry and a reassurance, but for now she tells the truth. She feels… happy.

Bridget stands when the music changes. Her blue satin dress, studded with rhinestones to look like a starry night sky, swirled a little as she extended a hand to Ruby. “May I have this dance?”

Ruby grins, and places her palm in Bridget’s. For her own dress she’d chosen something black with a black tulle skirt, and paired it with a pair of chuck taylors. For comfort, she told her moms, though in truth she’d wanted to wear them as a subtle fuck-you to… whoever needed one, Ruby supposes. She’s been feeling a lot of that lately.

But for the moment, rebellion and fuck-you’s fall by the wayside as she follows Bridget to the dance floor. When they reach their destination, Bridget turns to face Ruby, tugging her close until Ruby is able to loop her arms around Bridget’s neck. Ruby takes the opportunity to lean in and give her girlfriend a long, slow kiss.

When they pause for breath, their foreheads lean gently together. “I know you’re not one for clichés,” Bridget murmurs softly, “and this is probably the most cliché thing to say at prom, but… I love you, Ruby.”

“I love you too.”

She means it. Every part of her life has been better since Bridget entered it, and even now she can’t imagine how she would have survived the last three years without her. Ruby knows how lucky she is: how lucky she is that Bridget is still here, with her. There were so many times Bridget had every right to dip, to find Ruby’s family and their struggles too much for her, to protect herself from everything the Arias-Luthor-Danvers family seemed to regularly face. But she hadn’t. She’s here, right now, in Ruby’s arms, loving her.

Ruby opens her eyes, and over Bridget’s shoulder she spies Alex next to the exit, crisp and dapper in a simple black suit. Alarm fizzles through her senses to realize that Alex’s focus isn’t on her and Bridget, but instead focused intently on something beyond the dance floor. Before she can panic, though, Bridget nudges her.

“Look.”

Ruby turns, and watches as her mom saunters over to the punch table, her hand reaching for Lena’s just  as Bridget had reached for hers just moments before. Her mom’s lips move in what could only be an invitation. Lena’s return smile is languid and warm. The swirling spotlights reflect off the silver plated prosthetic hand that settles into Sam’s palm.

Since losing half her arm in the L-Corp collapse two years ago, Lena has made several prosthetics, with varying levels of cybernetic function—and weaponry. But while tonight’s prosthesis is as dexterous as an organic hand, its prominent feature is the elegant filigree etched into the nth metal plates and rods.

Ruby watches them sway to the music with emotion swelling in her chest. When the topic of chaperoning had come up, her mom had been the first to jump at the opportunity.

“I missed mine,” she’d said. “It’ll be fun.”

Alex had snorted. “Didn’t miss much—just a bunch of dumbass kids high on teenaged hormones.” She’d looked at Lena. “Right, babe?”

Lena had shrugged. “I wouldn’t know.”

“Don’t tell me…”

“I was already two years at MIT, love. Unless a debutante ball counts--?”

“NO IT DOES NOT,” had been the unanimous decision, Ruby included. And so, all three of her moms had signed up.

Ruby hadn’t minded, but now she was glad for it, watching her mom and Lena swaying to the music. This is good. This is… normal. Safe. And wonderful.

The touch of Ruby’s head leaning against hers pulls Ruby from her thoughts. “Your moms love each other so much,” Bridget says. “That’ll be us one day.”

“Yeah?” Ruby drawls in a low voice. She smirks. “You mean crashing our kid’s prom and being cringe?”

Her teasing earns a laugh, which fills Ruby with joy. “Yeah,” Bridget confirms. “So cringe.”

Ruby ducks in to capture her girlfriend’s lips once more, kissing her softly. When she pulls back, she meets Bridget’s gaze with a smile.

“I can’t wait.”
