*For the sake of the story the time frame has been altered, it takes place in the mid-2000s. Also! I tried to make the reader as generalized as I could to make sure that everyone can relate. The reader is Alex’s sister, for inclusion that can be biological, adopted, half or stepsiblings. I want to make sure all people can be the reader.

THIS IS FROM MY SECONDARY BLOG! REPOST!!
The 1990s was definitely some of the best years of your life watching your brother grow more comfortable in his identity. Alex had kept his sexuality secret, taking the frustration of the secret by learning how to play the drums. You would often be found curled on the chair listening to his growing talent; Alex was a great brother.
Alex found friends in three local boys Reggie, Bobby and Luke, even a little more than friends with Luke briefly. By 1991 the boys had formed a band Sunset Curve with each other and a loyal fan in you. By mid-1994 the band had a fanbase and some gigs, but playing The Orpheum was the goal.
Luke had admitted to Alex, he had feelings for you, and with a lot of encouragement from Alex, he approached you. Luke had been focused on music since his parents gave him his first guitar, so relationships weren’t even on the backburner.
“Hey.” Luke spoke, pressing a kiss to your cheek backstage, “Missed you.”
His hair tickled your skin, bringing a bright smile from the teenage boy and a deep blush from you, private time wasn’t as often as it once had been. After Luke’s fallout with his parents a few months back, he had couch surfed between Reggie and Alex’s rooms; he wasn’t allowed in yours.
“You saw me last night.”
“A monumental time.” Luke bent his bend to place a lingering kiss on your bare shoulder, his jacket having fallen down, “Three years together and a bright future ahead.”
Last night had been the third anniversary of your relationship and hopefully the previous night worrying on parents walking in, cheap dates Luke often felt guilty about. Luke knew in his bones playing The Orpheum tonight would open the door to a legendary future. A future where money wasn’t tight and he could you on dates he deemed acceptable for the love of his life.
Bobby voiced brought Sunset Curve’s lead singer back to that moment, you dropped from the stage to settle in the empty audience to watch the soundcheck. With a wink from Alex, he started making the beat to Now or Never, you beamed as they poured their souls into the song. The four were talented and made to be in a band together even if you didn’t really like Bobby.
Cringing at the awkward wink Bobby sent you turned on your converse to head to the bar for a glass of water. Thanking the bartender, you tuned out the conversation with the waitress and the band only jumping when arms wrapped around your waist.
“We’re getting street dogs.” Luke spoke, bringing your body to rest on his chest, “Do you want one?”
The thought of those street dogs honestly horrifying given they were cooked in some random guys car. The one time you tried, it had permanently tattooed the taste in your memories forever, and just remembering was vomit-inducing.
“I’ll pass.” You wrinkled your nose, turning to wrap your arms around his neck, “I don’t know how you guys like those.”
“Tradition.” Luke shrugged caressing your cheekbone with the pad of this thumb. Gazing at features he wanted to wake up to for the rest of his life, “Still down with the plan?”
“The minute I’m eighteen, we go to the nearest chapel.” You grinned playing with the hair at the nape of his neck, “I’ll be waiting Rockstar.”
Luke pressed a long passionate kiss on your lips, pulling away to jog over to Alex and Reggie waiting at the door. Bobby having declined the street dog invitation to flirt with the waitress Rose. Alex waved before the door closed. Little did you know that would be the last time you saw them alive.
1995 was the worst year of your life. 1996 was the hardest, especially with the forever reminder of your love. You wouldn’t trade 1996 for the world however, only wishing for one change.
Los Angeles, 2004
Alex, Reggie and Luke had learnt a mere few days away from that life had drastically changed forever. Firstly, the three boys had died from eating the street dogs mere hours before performing on the stage of The Orpheum. Secondly, it was no longer 1995 but instead nearly ten years had past bringing the three ghosts into 2004.
The most jarring wasn’t being able to be heard playing music with a random girl named Julie but that the most constant part of the band no longer was there. You hadn’t died that night, and Alex was pretty sure you were still alive. Luke felt lost waking up without you beside him and the deep regret of not reconciling with his parents.
It would be a week before Luke would swallow his pride enough to orb himself into his unchanged childhood home. Emily, Luke’s mom, was in the well-worn chair knitting a scarf Luke recognized as his favourite colours. Mitch was in the kitchen, putting the groceries away. It was heartbreaking being invisible to his aged parents.
“Hey, Mom.” Luke sniffled sitting on the couch nearby staring at his silent mother, “Sorry for not visiting sooner.”
Tears welled up in the boy’s eyes feeling hopeless, not being able to ease his parents’ pain, the regret and guilt bubbling to the surface.
“How is Y/N? I bet she’s living in New York of London now. We promised to travel the world together. Part of me is guilty of wishing she had eaten a street dog that night so we could be together.” Luke sobbed, wrapping his arms around his midsection reminiscing on the beautiful girl he had unwillingly left.
“Hey.” Mitch spoke, kissing his wife’s forehead. Her eyes closing in contentment.
“I wonder if you know where Reg and Alex’s parents are. Reggie’s neighbourhood was torn down who knows when. It makes me scared to see if Alex and Y/N’s parents still have their place. I don’t think so. They lost their son.”
“Hey Luke.”
Luke glanced over his shoulder to see Alex at the door, reluctant to impose of Luke’s privacy.
“Yeah.”
“We’re rehearsing.” Alex spoke, smiling as the other teenager took one more wistful look at his parents before orbing out of his house to the Molina family’s garage. Minutes later, the front door opening and feet thudding brought the noise to the Patterson home.
“Grandma!”
A four-foot blue of green and black blur covered the room in seconds nearly sprawling Mitch to the floor. Why was that 1996 year difficult? Well, ’95 was when Sunset Curve tragically died, and a stick changed your life. ’96 was spent going through the last five months of pregnancy without Luke.
October 1995
You kept your lips pressed tightly together, unable to look at the smooth, shiny mahogany rectangle surrounded by flowers. Looking up meant the reality kicking in. Funerals sucked. Especially the third funeral in the last handful of days. It was surreal thinking that one week ago you had kissed your boyfriend and hugged your brother and now they were dead. Gone. Not even a goodbye.
“Are you okay?” The broke voice asked, gaining your attention. Swollen red eyes matching yours held unimaginable pain. While the last few months had been icy with your parents, it didn’t mean losing one of their kids didn’t sting.
“I will be.” You whispered clasping your hands over the scratchy black velvet dress, one you had worn three times too many.
The sobs broke out seeing the best picture Alex had taken in his life, it encapsulated his best features; his beaming smile and kind, caring eyes. Alex was gone. Your brother was gone because he ate a bad hot dog with his friends. You would never see your boys again. Never feel Luke’s skin or share a laugh with Alex or complain about things with Reggie. You wouldn’t get to meet in the chapel with Luke wearing second hand ‘fancy’ clothing. In one night, your life changed.
It changed further seeing the two lines on the test later that night. The heartache growing. The baby you carried would never meet his uncles and his Dad. Would never hear them play or learn to play. ’95 and ’96 sucked ass.
You sighed, closing the door to follow the rambunctious ball of energy into the living room where he entertained Mitch and Emily. Some days it was difficult to stare into the green eyes he inherited from his father.
“Benjamin Lucas.” You spoke crossing your arms, meeting the gaze of the eight-year-old boy, “What did I say?”
“To not runoff.” Ben quietly replied, playing with his hands. His messy brown hair, in need of a trim, falling into his eyes, “Sorry Mom.”
“Please don’t do it again.” You gently told the little boy elated as he quickly found the toy box in the corner of the room.
Ben was loved deeply by Mitch and Emily, who had stepped up when your parents made the decision to sell your childhood home. Wanting Ben to know his paternal grandparents, you had struggled to find an apartment and job to say in the neighbourhood. Since the baby was the last part of their son, the Patterson parents’ had welcomed you into the home where you stayed until Ben was two.
“Do you want us to come around for Luke’s birthday?” You questioned sitting on the love seat, the same love seat you had made out on with Luke many times during movies.
The room turned sad at the question and reminded that for the ninth year, you would celebrate Luke’s birthday without him. A day where Ben wouldn’t fully understand. Emily simply nodded her head.
“Have you met anyone?” Mitch asked, leaning over to clasp his hands together. For the last few years, they had been pushing you to date. They wanted your happiness and for Ben to have a father even if Luke couldn’t be it.
“Mama can we stay here tonight?” Ben’s innocent voice cut the tension, saving you from answering the question again. Mitch and Emily each nodded their heads at the question, unable to tell the young boy no.
“Have you ate?” Emily asked, turning to look at you in concern. The chuckle left your mouth at the question she frequently requested, she missed cooking for more than two.
“We had pasta before we came.” You replied, turning to gaze out the window to the dark sky, “I should put Ben to bed.”
The soft whine from your son and denial was a nightly routine and very much a mirror image to Luke’s character as well. With a smile, Emily held out her hand to her grandchild, she was notoriously the only one able to get Ben to sleep fast.
“Come on Bug.”
It seemed the universe was keeping Luke from seeing you and discovering Ben, but when that night came, he was shocked. Emily was curled up on the patio couch, watching Ben in the newly bought sandbox. The patio doors opened. Inside, Mitch had invited a stranger who knew his son into the house.
“I think I heard the doorbell. I’ll be right back.” Emily called out to you. You had found shade under the tree reading a new book.
The soft cry had you up and running to Ben before you even realized, on his knee was a bleeding wound. You had already scooped the boy into your arms to quickly get into the kitchen. The moment your foot stepped into the home, the sound of a familiar voice and song filled the house.
Gently placing Ben on his feet, you followed the sound to the living room. Across the room behind a young girl stood a boy.
“Luke.” You breathed floored at the sight of the teenager who looked exactly like he did back in ’95. The ghost singing widened his eyes at yours, taking in the mature features and change of fashion.
He continued to sing the song Unsaid Emily he had written as an apology to his mom following the last big fight. The song he never got to show her. His voice faded as the ending of the song came around.
“Mama!” Your attention broke from Luke’s when a tiny hand reached for yours. The pain in his voice bringing you back to the most important part of your life, “It hurts Mama.”
Despite being sad, Mitch was the one to cross the room to lift the little boy into his arms. Placing the little boy on the counter, the man gently wet a paper towel to wash the area.
“I think he needs stitches.” Mitch sighed, furrowing his brows.
“Who is that?” Luke asked the Molina girl. The girl shrugged taking in the features she could recognize. Julie asked Emily.
“That’s Ben.” Emily beamed, looking over her shoulder at the little boy that filled the void of Luke’s death. It didn’t fix the wound or erase the pain, but Ben’s existence helped with the loss as he was a precious gift, “When Luke passed away his girlfriend Y/N found out she was pregnant with Luke’s baby.”
The choked sob fell from Luke’s mouth echoed by the thud of his knees, hitting the floor in the pure shock. The heartbreak painted so clear Julie was sure she could feel Luke’s agony.
God, why did Luke have to eat that fucking street dog. Fuck his band dreams. Nothing hurt as bad as finding out about Ben and Y/N having to be a single parent.
“I have a son?” Luke cried, orbing himself as far as he could from the Patterson home and his most tremendous loss.
Summary: A beautiful day Luke visits a record store to relive the times he would buy an album, but he finds more than memories. He meets you and a connection blossoms between you two and then Reggie and Alex as well. All is well until Julie discovers something.

So, Julie’s life changed dramatically in the lost year and few months, firstly her family lost their mother. Secondly, Julie’s love for music faded until the melody and lyrics were haunting memories. Thirdly, after losing her place in the music program, she had to question her sanity. For in her garage lived three teenage ghosts to her disbelief and horror quite frankly; the ghosts grew on her so much she was in a band with them.
In the hours that Julie was attending school, the boys tended to tour the entire city. They enjoyed seeing the changes that had happened for the two and a half decades. Reggie really enjoyed the western-themed stores, even scaring a little girl with a floating cowboy hat that disappeared once on his head. Alex adored learning about the drastic changes within in the LGBTQ+ community, he had plans for when 2021 LA Pride came in June. Luke, of course, would go anywhere that had music such as music stores, record stores, concert venues and even followed a rock legend once.
“Ooh.” A voice spoke in the record store, “This would be the perfect gift.”
Luke turned to see you gazing at the Rock N’ Roll records with a passion in your eyes and an adorable smile that melted his heart. He couldn’t help but walk closer even if he had no clue if you could see him or not.
“Def Leppard? Definitely one of my favourite bands.” Luke spoke anticipating the usual one-sided conversation. His speculation shattered when you turned to face him with big eyes, “You can see me.”
You nodded your head, pushing your hands into your faded blue jeans glancing around the store, hoping the owner didn’t notice. To your relief the man was oblivious, Luke glanced over before stepping closer.
“You’re alive?”
“Mhm.” You spoke, removing a single hand to play with your burgundy jacket that cinched at the waist to give form. It was open to reveal a plain black shirt that left an inch of your midsection free, “I always wondered if ghosts were real. I got my answer.”
“This is so cool! My friend is the only person that can see my friends and me.” The grin was breathtaking on the teenage ghost. There was a connection between the two that was immediate and intense.
“At least you’re not alone.” You supplied turning to pick up the record, turning it around to read the tracklist. In the end, you decided you didn’t feel like buying it, replacing it you started for the front door.
A college-aged person walked in glued to the screen of the phone not replying as you mentioned a thank you before the door closed. Luke rushed to follow your steady pace in black hiking boots.
“Where are you going?” Luke questioned coming to the same stride as the girl that had taken his attention quickly. His interest had grown when he found he could hold a conversation with her.
“It’s a nice day. I thought I would go for a walk.” You replied, stopping to look around the street with curious eyes. Luke yearned for those eyes to look in his again because he swore he saw a galaxy in them, “Would you like to join me?”
Luke’s head was nodding in response with a new pep in his step as you walked down the street filled with all different kind of stores. Luke recognized Family Living Grocery store as the one that the Molina got their groceries, he and the guys had joined Julie on a trip once. It was one of his worst memories as a ghost, surrounded by snacks and food he couldn’t indulge in.
“So, what’s your story, Caspar?” You questioned stopping to look as at a beautiful dollhouse, “My cousin had one. We actually renovated it a while back for her unborn niece.”
“Caspar?” Luke teased, watching the nostalgia faded from your expression as you continued on the walk. His hazel eyes, greener at the moment, glittered at the different banter he had with you than the guys or Julie.
“Well, I don’t know your name!” You exclaimed turning the corner at a parlour with gorgeous stencilled artwork on the glass.
“Luke. My name is Luke. Hey! I know this shop!” Luke beamed, stepping back to take in the storefront. In the twenty-five years since he last saw it, the blue faded into a teal, but the door was still the same as it always was.
“You have a tattoo?” You asked, scanning his arms bare in the cut off shirt he wore. You couldn’t see any ink on his skin. Luke couldn’t help the smirk on his face at the blatant heated gaze.
“No. It was 1994. We just played our biggest gig at the time, and Bobby decided we should get tattoos.” Luke’s mouth twisted at the mention of his former friend, “Of course we were sixteen and Alex just about fainted in the shop. The guy took one look at Reggie and laughed at our fake IDs. Told us to come back in a few years.”
One of the few memories that weren’t tainted by the betrayal that Trevor Wilson had gone on to do a year after the tattoo fiasco. It was more than not being credited or his songs being stolen, but it was also that someone he wholeheartedly trusted turned his back on them. Luke frankly didn’t care how Bobby coped after that fateful night. Still, he changed his name and refused any mention of his previous music experience. That hurt a lot.
“So, you’re a ’90s kid.” You raised an eyebrow coming to a stop on the edge of the street, pressing the button to cross.
“Technically a ’70s kid. We died in ’95 a few hours before a life-changing gig.” The mood turned sombre as Luke thought back on that one night that life decided to raise both middle fingers at his dreams, “Death by a hot dog.”
The snicker fell from your mouth before you do anything about it but sobered up quickly in the view of his painful admittance.
“So, you’re seventeen?” You asked crossing when the crosswalk light flickered on. Your attention focused on crossing while listening to the teenager.
“Forever seventeen but I would eighteen physically, but if I had survived I would be forty-three.” Luke mused shoving his hands into his staple black jeans with the chains and his constant accessory of a blue rabbit’s foot.
“Oh, damn. I’ve seventeen as well.” You replied dodging pedestrians before humming a to a song you had heard recently but where you did was unknown. You didn’t want to bump into anyone.
Luke glanced down at his watch, somehow even in death it worked, noticing that it was around the time rehearsal would commence. The thought barely ended before a flash of light preceded Alex’s presence. You slightly jumped in response.
“Luke! Julie’s wondering where you are. We have rehearsal.” Alex was surprised that Luke wasn’t already at the studio. He was always the first one holding his guitar for the rest of them.
One glance at the girl beside Luke cemented a reason for his tardiness. Alex could see that you were the reason and a pretty reason too. Alex wished he had your jacket with such a beautiful colour, but the music was more important.
“Oh, man!” Luke panicked fearing that being late would cause Julie to leave the band after the whole school dance fiasco.
“So, Luke. I like your name by the way. I’m Y/N.” You greeted holding back from offering you a hand, your theory would have been proven correct. Ghosts can’t touch other people, all the movies portrayed that.
“Nice to meet you! I’ll find you soon!” Luke shouted seconds before Alex poofed them both away with a single hand on his bandmate’s shoulder.
A content smile appeared before you continued on your way, unaware of the lack of acknowledgement from people on the street.
The next few days, Luke would find you either in the record store or just out front during his free time. He hadn’t realized how lonely he was touring the music entertainment spots until he had your company. Soon you were joined by Alex and Reggie every once in a while.
The three were planning outings with their new lifer friend as Julie grabbed her songbook from her room. She was amused when the three wouldn’t shut up.
“What are you planning?” Julie questioned scanning their animated expressions, even taking in the slight change in Alex’s appearance.
Alex had a braided bracelet of the rainbow on his left wrist that definitely hadn’t been there yesterday. He even seemed calmer and less anxious, as well.
“What happened to Alex?” Julie questioned with a small smirk, “Did you bump into Willie?”
Alex shook his head, “No, Luke met this girl at a record store and then Reggie and I met her. She’s cool! There’s this app she showed us, and it had videos of anything you could imagine!”
Julie’s teasing smile faltered at the mention of Luke meeting someone before it returned once more. She pushed the feeling away as this girl had brought peace to the drummer.
“What’s her name?” Julie asked, pushing the songbook away to listen intently to the new piece of the boys’ afterlife. The three burst into stories of the girl.
“She took me to this cool place nearby where people store their horses!” Reggie burst out, clapping his head, “I already have a country song started! This is so a hit single for our future country album!”
Alex only released an exasperated sigh at Reggie’s idea that he voiced every single day since the beginning of the band. Luke was just used to finding sheets of songs from Reggie around the studio and often his songbook too.
“She also brought me a bag of clothing she had in her house that she let me go through. Apparently, her house is the place where cousins take their old clothing.” Alex supplied striking a pose in his new white sweater with a rainbow logo on the front.
Julie grinned at the positivity radiating off the two boys.
“Is she a ghost?”
Luke shook his head, “No. She’s alive.”
A spark of happiness flits itself inside of Julie before it dissipated because Flynn had already gently let the girl down about Luke.
“What’s her name! I’m gonna find her Instagram!” Julie took out her phone waiting as Alex supplied her the name. Her thumbs froze before she could type staring down at the black screen.
The name was familiar.
Laying on a bed on San Pablo Street was a girl with her eyes closed and a serene expression. This bed wasn’t just any bed in a home. Instead, this bed was one no one wished to be in. A bed with machines surrounding and right in the middle of those machines was Y/N.
The very girl that had met Luke, Reggie and Alex were in fact in the ICU of a hospital recovering in a coma.
“Why do you look like that?” Luke demanded as the colour drained from the lead singer of their band.
“Are you sure it was Y/N Y/L/N?” Julie gulped dread filling her veins as each boy nodded their head and the girl slumped, “I go to school with her. The thing is she’s been in a coma for two weeks now.”
You were outside the record store once more as the three ghosts appeared in front of you each looking the worst you had ever seen them.
“Did you lie?” Luke questioned stepping closer to the teenage girl that furrowed her brows in confusion, “You said that you are alive. Why did you lie?”
“Lie?” You asked, taking a step back from the odd energy the boys had. A look of distraught on each face, “What are you talking about?”
“Why are you here every day at this exact time. Never late, never early.” Alex questioned sick to his stomach as your brows came together.
“I- walk…” You trailed off thinking of the last week in deep thought paling as you had no recollection of going home or getting to the store. It was like you blacked out each time.
Actually, the last time you remember not being with the guys or at the store was two weeks ago.
“I don’t re…member.” You whispered, “I haven’t seen my family since…oh my god.”
Luke stepped closer, terrified as he reached out, hoping with his entire being his hand would go through you. It didn’t. Luke’s hand rested on your arm, still wearing that burgundy jacket. Your eyes flickered between his solid hand and the same outfit you wore for weeks now. Why would you be wearing a jacket and hiking boots in Los Angeles?
“My cousin had been saving up for a trip for her eighteenth birthday. She wanted to go skiing, so we split the cost between our families.”
As if a wall broke, you realized with horror that the college boy that hadn’t held the for you like you first thought. He hadn’t seen or heard you because in his world you weren’t there. No one had acknowledged you because they couldn’t see you just like they couldn’t see Luke.
“What else do you remember?” Reggie spoke up next, noticing that Luke was getting more upset. His eyes going so light the green appeared to be blue and glittered with tears and his heart dropping.
“My parents, my cousin and I were driving up the mountain in the rented car. There-“
Two Weeks Ago
Your head leaned again Lou’s head sharing the headphones connected to your phone blasting the carefully curated playlist. Lou had been living with your parents and you the last six months as her parents were travelling for work. It was a dream because she was like a sister already and vice versa; Lou as a surprise baby with her older sister being ten years older.
“We haven’t been to the slopes since we first got married.” Dad said glancing over at your mother in the passenger seat, “Didn’t we conceive-“
“Dad! Gross!” You shouted, wrinkling your nose as he glanced in the rear-view mirror to smile at your antics. Your mother’s laugh was probably one of your most favourite sounds in the world, it was warm like hot chocolate on a cold day.
“Did you see that video of the hologram band?” Lou asked, not paying attention to your family’s antics, “It’s super cool.”
“We still have half of our playlist to go through. You should show me when we get to the cabin.” You replied, “We could put it on the projector with the others.”
The others being your extended family, including the surprise of Lou’s parents. Your mother pointed out the snow on the mountain gaining everyone’s attention. It was beautiful compared to sunny Los Angeles.
Lou’s thumb was just about to click the video of Julie and the Phantoms against your wishes. You felt the fear before the yell, snapping your head up you watched as a pickup truck hit ice swerving into your lane. The screech of tires preceded the crunch of the vehicles hitting each other. Throughout the surrounding area, the echoes of the crash bounced off the mountains scaring birds away. Miraculously Lou’s phone survived the crash and played the electric video of ‘Edge of Great’ by Julie and the Phantoms. A song you would hum under your breath during your walks meeting the guys.
The snow turned red under four of five bodies. You lay nonconscious a stark difference in the burgundy jacket and black shirt you had painstakingly chosen that morning.
Summary: Life as you knew it shattered and now you’re left picking up the pieces with memories of a boy with hazel eyes in your dreams. A handsome guitarist who easily becomes your unseen number one supporter. If only you could see him again.
Warning: Swearing, mention of injuries, mention of car accident and talk of death.

In a split second for the first time, you felt yourself, poof, away to a sterile white room staring down at the person in the bed. Covered in cuts and bruises of all colours, was you. A broken version of you that made you sick to your stomach. You desperately yearned to go back to being unaware.
“I’m…a ghost?” You breathed looking at your blemish-free hands, a juxtaposition to the arm in a cast. Then in a nauseating thought, the grief faded for fear on your family. Had they survived? You ran out of the room straight to a nurse, “Where are my parents! Where’s my cousin Lou?”
Of course, the nurse was unaware of an upset, emotional teenage girl, a victim of a car crash and in a battle for her life. Realizing no one would answer you spent hours running around the hospital searching for your parents or Lou.
“Lou!” You shouted through the halls unfazed as you ran literally through gurneys and medical equipment even the odd doctor.
At the very last room, you found Lou sitting up in a bed staring silently at the white wall with an official man seated by the side of her bed. He held a clipboard in his hand.
“Lou, how are you feeling?” The man spoke, his white coat embroidered with his profession and labelling him a psychiatrist.
“Fine.”
“You’ve suffered a trau-“
“I’m aware. I was there. I saw a paramedic violently hitting my cousin’s chest, I saw so much blood. I didn’t know there could be that much blood!” Lou snapped glaring the man down, “I saw the brains of the idiot that caused the accident! You don’t know shit! Oh, your little degree magically has you able to understand what I’m going through?!”
“Lou-“
“You wanted me to talk! So, let me talk!” Lou screamed at the man startling you with the anger, “My cousin! My best friend, my SISTER is up in a bed in a coma! A coma because I wanted to go to a stupid resort to ski! It’s my fault! And no one will tell me anything about my aunt and uncle!”
You stumbled back at the pain Lou displayed, it broke your heart, and you couldn’t listen to it anymore.
“Lou, let’s talk about survivor’s gu-“
You fell through the closed door before you could hear anything more from the psychiatrist. You ambled around the floor aimlessly feeling the worst you ever had and to think for two weeks you hadn’t been aware of anything.
“Did you hear?” A nurse spoke from just outside your hospital room. You jogged over reading her name tag of Melissa.
“Heard what?”
“The father of the mountain accident he flatlined in surgery. Doctors got him back, but they’re concerned about brain damage.” Nurse Melissa told her fellow nurse with concern pinching her expression.
“That’s the father of the Y/L/N patient, right?” Nurse Lucy spoke glancing at your hospital door, “I hope they’ll be alright.”
“That poor girl has quite the decision to make. To live or to die. It’s all on her now.” Nurse Melissa replied, “Her mother died-“
“Little unprofessional to gossip about patients in earshot of everyone. Did you know that coma patients can often hear things while unconscious? Or my favourite tip…did you learn about HIPAA?” The doctor on duty asked, staring the two nurses down with a glared. Each nurse shifted on their feet, “Stop gossiping and do your job. I’m sure you can change bedpans or give sponge baths.”
The nurses scattered, leaving you standing in shock at the information given to you. Your mother was dead, your father could be brain dead, and Lou wasn’t coping well. Leaving you in a state of wondering what to do. Should you stay in a world without your parents or let go to join them in heaven. The thought had you collapsing into screams on the floor as everyone went about their work; walking through the hysterical teenager.
A warm hand slid into your own with a comforting squeeze, but all you wanted was to feel your father wrap you in a bear hug. To listen to your mother’s laugh, move in the air with that beautiful musical sound. You want Lou to be okay.
Luke was quiet as he sat the floor, squeezing your hand every once in a while. You slumped into his arms, staring unfeeling at the door that separated your ghostly form from your physical one. Luke poofed you to the Molina garage right on the couch where he held you tight for god knows how long.
“She’s dead.” Your voice cracked tears rolling down your cheeks once more, “My mom is dead.”
“Sh.” Luke cooed pressing his lips against your temple as you curled further into his body. His heart broke for you as the gravity of the situation became crystal clear.
“Hi.” Luke’s eyes met the concerned ones of Julie Molina, a girl that would undoubtedly know how you felt. The thing that connected you being the loss of a mother figure, “I’m Julie.”
Your blank expression lifted to see a girl you had often seen in the halls of Los Feliz High School and vaguely remembered her. She had been performing during the Spirit Rally months ago.
“I’m a friend of Luke, Reggie and Alex. I’m sorry you’re going through this, but you are more than welcome to stay here. You can be in my room or here if you’re more comfortable.” Julie offered knowing exactly how you felt when a year ago, she had been grieving the loss of her mom.
“Thank you.” You replied hoarsely. Exhaustion from sobbing closed your eyes, something that was different to Luke as a ghost was your ability to sleep.
Alex theorized that you could sleep because your body was still alive, whereas the boys had no physical body. They were just ghosts. He and Reggie were in the studio sadly watching as you slipped in a deep unsettled sleep. Luke’s broken eyes met his best friends before he had Alex come over.
“Please stay with her.” Luke whispered, leaving the tall blonde to switch places. Luke disappeared without another word.
“Where’s-“Julie began, but Reggie interrupted her with a sad smile.
“Remember when we took you to Luke’s house? He’ll do the same but with her.” Reggie supplied coming to sit on the floor in front of the couch; his hand grabbing yours in support.
In a medium-sized house with a backyard kept tidy by the neighbours, Luke found his way to your room. His grabbed a few items of clothing and sneakers into a discarded bag before he dropped the bag off in Julie’s bedroom. His next stop was your hospital room. Luke settled himself in the chair beside you watching your chest go up and down from the breathing tube.
“Hi. I don’t know you in this form, but I know your spirit. I’m not good with my words, but I’m going to try. Two weeks ago I met you in a record store, and I fell in love faster than I can tune my guitar and believe me I have the record in the band. I never believed in love at first sight, but I also didn’t believe in ghosts, but here we are!” Luke chortled leaning to place his hand on yours, but it slipped through.
His smile saddened, “As much as I love holding you and kissing your head… I’d much prefer feeling that aching and yearning feel in my gut. If I felt that then it meant you would be alive and well. I’d rather be sad that I can’t feel you than have you die so young.”
Luke saw your eyelids flicker and he hoped it was because you could hear him.
“You have so much to live for. It’s gonna be hard. I can’t deny that, but I need you to stay. Stay alive and fight for me. For Lou.” Luke choked, squeezing his eyes shut grateful when a hand rested on his shoulder. He knew it was Alex.
“Whatever you’re saying. Continue.” Alex whispered, “It’s working, her body is slowly becoming transparent.”
Alex’s words were further proven as Nurse Melissa jogged in surprised as she took vitals, “Well I’ll be damned. You decided to fight.”
Alex and Luke shared a relieved expression as you got even more strong. Together they returned to the garage. Luke was able to press one kiss to your forehead before you flickered once, twice, thrice before you dissipated.
In that hospital room, a beautiful thing occurred. Your eyes opened. Luke swore the birds sang better at the moment.
Recovery was hard. Relearning the little things, you took for granted was frustrating. Lou would hover as if you would disappear and you thought you were going insane. If you were waking up screaming by nightmares of the crash than it was waking confused on dreams that felt like memories.
The small victories helped like when you walked the entire hospital or when you were able to use the toilet and not the bedpan. The best win was being discharged to Lou’s parents and only needing outpatient physical therapy. Six months later, your father was awake and getting better; the loss of your mother still burnt hot and red.
It was on the sixth month anniversary when you walked down an oddly familiar street. Merritt happily trotting on his afternoon walk; Merritt had been an immense help. In your first month of recovery post coma, you met Merritt who would become your service dog.
A sense of déjà vu nudged you as you took in a vintage styled record store you swore you knew before. Continuing on you stop again at a toy story with a dollhouse.
“My cousin had one…for her unborn niece.” The sentence floated in your mind, but you couldn’t put a conversation.
“Caspar?” A male voice recalled in a distant memory of a dream a few days ago. You couldn’t think of anyone who had that voice, and absolutely no way had you ever seen that dollhouse before.
“Just coincidence.” You mumbled scratching Merritt’s head as his wet nose nudged your head before you could worry more. You watched people roaming thankful that you could do that, that you survived.
It was the building on the very end that confused you the most. Your eyes scanned the name proudly announcing itself as a tattoo parlour. A gasp left your lips as a vivid memory popped into your head with a boy that matched that voice you had thought of earlier.
Luke couldn’t help the smirk on his faceat the blatant heated gaze.
“No.It was 1994.
You were so thankful for Merritt as he nestled up into a dog version of a hug as you felt the crippling anxiety. He was always there and knew about to help, support dogs don’t get enough credit.
When your eyes opened, it is like a dam broke and suddenly you remembered walking this street with three guys. The conversations and even the garage where one had held you in an incredibly vulnerable moment. Three ghosts that helped you when you needed it but didn’t know.
“Luke.” You breathed seeing a form shimmer in the sun as it flickered into a hazy form. Similar to how you did in the garage before going back to your body, he flashed three times. He solidified on the fourth with a great big grin.
“You can see me.” Luke cried, walking closer as he felt on top of the world when your eyes focused on him. He finally felt that yearning to meet your gaze fade away, “I missed you.”
You followed him to the Molina garage.
“I thought we’d never be able to talk again.” Luke sighed, reaching over, and he physically grabbed your hand, “I don’t know if I can touch you because of your former state or because of Julie.”
“Hm?” You questioned sitting cross legged on the bed.
“When I wasn’t watching over you, I was with Julie and the guys.” Luke went into detail about Caleb and the jolts, “We didn’t cross over because it’s not our unfinished business, but the stamps were destroyed when Julie hugged us. We’re sure that just like our instruments are connected to our souls that Julie did as well.”
Your hand brushed Luke’s cheek taking in the silky feeling of his skin, “I thought I was going crazy. I had these dreams of things I didn’t do in reality. My mind just wasn’t ready to remember the beauty of our connection.”
“This is an interesting little relationship you and I have.” Luke chuckled, thinking on how lucky he was to even know you, “You’re so beautiful.”
“Thank you.” You whispered gratefully to intertwine your fingers with Luke’s hand as well. It was like they were made for each regardless of the circumstances that brought you together, “I’m not ready for anything more than friendship, but I do strong feelings for you.”
“Being dead has an advantage. I can wait for eternity, and for you, I would. Just so you know, I have strong feelings for you as well.” Luke beamed scanning your face, taking in the blemishes from the crash. In the time you hadn’t been aware of him following coming out of the coma, he had become acquainted with your injuries.
When those little victories of weight-bearing, walking one step then two and finally that entire hallway Luke had been there unseen cheering you on. When you ‘graduated’ from the inpatient therapy Alex, Reggie and Luke had been there in silent support.
“Do what you need to do, and I’ll be right here for you.” Luke smiled gently, removing his guitar from the case, “Can I play something?”
You nodded in response as started strumming to a new song he had created in the last handful of months.
“It’s like a storm
That cuts a path
It’s breaks your will
It feels like that
You think you’re lost
But your not lost on your own
You’re not alone
I will stand by you
I will help you through
When you’ve done all you can do
If you can’t cope
I will dry your eyes
I will fight your fight
I will hold you tight
And I won’t let go
It hurts my heart
To see you cry
I know it’s dark
This part of life
Oh it finds us all (finds us all)
And we’re too small
To stop the rain
Oh but when it rains
The song touched you so intimately as he sang the last few lines softly keeping eye contact with you.
“…Oh I’m gonna hold you
And I won’t let go
Won’t let you go
No I won’t”
You pressed a lingering kiss to his cheek that flushed at the feel of your lips against his skin. His heart fluttered and knew that you were his soulmate and he truly hoped Julie could find someone that could love her like she deserves. Luke’s heart belonged to yours and yours alone and vice versa for you as well.

On your honeymoon, you had expected lots of wine, sex and relaxation for once in a hectic lifestyle you had chosen from that first date of some now defunct dating app. Five years later you hadn't expected the honeymoon to consist of pregnancy tests, saltine crackers and puking. Despite feeling ill, you had decided to keep your suspicions to yourself and keep having fun because these few weeks are the only ones Noah had been stress-free for awhile.
"Babe!" Noah exclaimed peeking his head back into the bungalow with a bright smile, "Are you feeling better?"
"I think that fast food I had, had given me food poisoning." You moaned from the king-sized fluffy bed. The padding of his bare feet sounded first before he settled on the mattress next to you.
"Should be head back home?"
"No." You shook your head quickly, "I'll be fine. I'll just take it easy. Help me up?"
Noah gently grasped your hands in his as he shifted you into his arms to bring you out into the sunny day that England offered finally. In a few days, you would head to Paris, France for the last leg of the honeymoon before returning to your jobs.
"I love you." You sighed leaning into his body more with a beaming smile despite nausea you still felt settled into a less intense feeling, "I'm so happy you married me."
"How could I not with that beautiful smile, caring personality and my gorgeous counterpart." Noah chuckled to himself as the sunrise over the small lake side retreat you had chosen months ago.
Maybe when you returned home in a few weeks, you would have news for Noah about a possible little bean joining the family. Early in the marriage, actually a few years sooner than planned, but there was no doubt that Noah would take the new life in strides. He was born to be a father.
"Do you think anyone would mind if we went for a little swim." Noah's husky voice asked barely a breathe away from your ear as his arms crossed over your midsection.
"Seeing as you booked the entire retreat and the employees signed Non-Disclosure Agreements I think it's safe to say we can." You winked before shedding the camisole you wore to bed last night from a suitcase of lingerie your friends had all bought as a bachelorette party gift.
"I love when you talk dirty to me." Noah joked chasing after your form just as easily removing articles of clothing before he dove under the water to pop up in front of you.
"What can I say? Those years of studying were put to use somehow." You retorted pressing a kiss on his cheek before he nestled into your neck with little love bites and whispers of love.
"I can't wait to spend my life with you."
Paris was more romantic than movies had shown with delicious food, beautiful lights at night and the Eiffel Tower didn't disappoint. Noah returned to filming an upcoming series you hoped would be picked up due to the new arrival coming in May, your calculations were confirmed at the doctors for a due date. It Baby C stayed on schedule with no early appearances the due date would be on Noah's birthday.
The first thing you had to do was tell Noah about it but given that he was a man of detail and observation you had decided to just leave hints around the house. First, you planted a soother in the open box of condoms in his side table and swiping his new script to underline baby in the middle of it. It was only the first part of the plan.
The man himself wandered into the room with a spoon hanging from his mouth and a yogurt container in the other while reading a script. Sundays were never worked on with the lovely director of the film, he reserved those days for his own family.
"Did you pick up milk?" You questioned with a glance at your husband.
"Behind the other milk in the fridge." Noah replied setting his script down while placing the spoon in the dishwasher and the yogurt container in the garbage, "How are you?"
"Perfect." You grinned wrapping your arms around his neck with a cheeky glint in your eye.
"I'll make supper if you can get some veggies and fruits." Noah proposed already opening the fridge to see a platter of veggies, all of the items baby sized, with a chuckle, "I should have known you would have done that already."
The night passed with Noah not catching the little hints even when he had taken his watch off before bed to put in his side table. His eyes caught sight of the pacifier, but he assumed your friend had dropped it when she was helping you choose a new colour for the room. She had had a baby only a few months ago, so he had known she sometimes forgot items. You chuckled as he didn't even catch the underlined work in the script before he yawned.
"Can you hand me the bookmark?" He asked as you gently passed it over.
"Can you pick some things up from the store?" You questioned, "I'm not sure if I'll make it in time. I have that check up with the doctor."
"Sure. Give me a list."
"I have coupons actually." You spoke up leaning over your side to pick up the few coupons. Despite the excellent money Noah brought into the home from acting roles and your well-paying job you preferred using coupons to save money if you could.
"Flour, cookies, pickles, peanut butter, saltines, Doritos and clam chowder. Baby other than flour and cookies we never buy this stu-" Noah cut himself off at the last coupon in his hand in shock. Blatantly displayed was a coupon able to be redeemed in eight months, "Are you...?"
"That one can be put away for a few months." You giggled, "I took a few tests in England. It wasn't food poisoning."
"Little Centineo." He breathed dropping them to pounce on you to press kisses all over your face with a grin that outmatched even the one from your wedding, "Oh my gosh you're carrying my baby."
"You think that you can play some music on your guitar to the baby?"
"Of fucking course. I have to call my parents." He made a dash for the door before you called him back.
"Or we can let them sleep and keep the news to ourselves for a while. Besides don't you wanna know my due date?" You smirked to yourselves as you started to walk over to him.
"This is ama...babe no you should sit down." He guided you back to sit on the bed once more, "When's Lil C coming?"
"Your birthday party may need to move to the hospital if things go to plan."
"Our baby is coming on my birthday." Noah breathed before collapsing on the bed backwards, "I feel like I'm gonna combust. Y/N I literally thought I couldn't love anything more than I love you, but you just proved me wrong. I haven't even seen an ultrasound and wow."
"Tomorrow you will if you can make it to the appointment. I have already been to one to confirm the pregnancy, but I refused to look at the screen until I could with you. It will be a special moment." You turned to cuddle into his side.
True to your words Noah's birthday was spent in the hospital months later cradling his sleeping newborn daughter in his arms. Barely a day old she had almost made it to Noah's birthday but just born at 11:49 pm you knew she was perfect and would still be adamant of celebrating with Daddy. You just knew in your heart that Noah had a new best friend for life.
"Sweetheart?" Kellee spoke through the cracked door, "Are you sure we can come in?"
From the hospital bed, you waved them in just as the baby opened her eyes to stare up at Noah. Noah's parents and sister came into the room having only just arrived at the hospital after the long drive. Your family had already been in a few hours ago before leaving your little family to bond.
"Hey, Mom," Noah whispered scooting the chair closer to your bed.
"Oh my gosh."
"You have a healthy granddaughter." You grinned up at your in-laws.
"What's her name?" Greg questioned peering at the newborn Noah passed to Kellee.
"We would like you to meet Kenzie Taylor Centineo." You breathed keeping your eyes on the pink bundle now in Greg's arms.
"Taylor." Your sister in law gasped blinking slowly, "You gave her my name."
"Well had you not spilt your wine on my shirt in that restaurant I wouldn't have met your brother, my husband." You tearfully replied ushering her over with Kenzie in her arms, "Without a doubt in my mind I knew from the minute I saw Kenzie on the ultrasound that she had to be named after one of the strongest women I know. Noah agreed. Thank you so much for helping me find the love of my life."
"Aw." Taylor nearly sobbed as Kenzie gripped her pointer finger in her hand and cooed up at her, "Well little Kenzie Taylor I hope you know we're going to have a day monthly of ice cream together, but for now you grow up some."
Your life was complete for a few years before another bundle was passed around the room wrapped in another hospital blanket.

The British accent caught the attention of everyone you came across in North America, specifically the U.S. even if you had been living in America for years. When your aunt moved away from London to America after the horrific accident that stole her partner your parents followed a year later.
It was a culture shock when you settled in Atlantis, Florida where there was barely anything to do compared to the large city you lived in England. It was terrible if you were honest even if you had friends that made sure you were brought to the larger cities to explore. That’s how you met Noah and how you started a tentative relationship with him when you were both around thirteen years old. It was serious as it could be at that age enough that when he moved to Los Angeles you stayed together until you were seventeen years old. After that you barely spoke other than that one time you called in desperation only to have no answer.
At eighteen you gave birth to Sutton Emerson Y/L/N in the fall of 2014 with a tough labouring process and her week stay in the NICU. Even if you struggled as a single mother you knew you had your family to help you along with Kellee and Greg when they got to see her. It was a mutual decision to keep Noah from knowing after he had ignored your calls, you had promised that if he didn’t call you back you would never bother him with your daughter.
When Greg went to visit Noah that first time after the breakup he saw a man that didn’t deserve to be a father of such an innocent little brunette baby girl. Sutton was now a vivacious four year old with messy curly shoulder length hair that was tough to brush and style but you wouldn’t change her for the world. You were thankful her eyes were the exact replica of yours so you never had to see his eyes in her.
“Sweetheart it’s time to go see Grams and Grumpa.” You spoke kneeling in front of her where she splayed on the ground in front of her doll house.
“No fanks.” Her little voice spoke with the British accent that had somehow come to have a twist from the American accent she was surrounded by everyday.
“Sutton we always go to Grams house on Friday for supper.” You sighed leaning down to scoop her into your arms, “Don’t you want to see Poppy?”
Poppy was the little puppy Greg and Kellee had bought for Poppy to play with, even if you had asked for nothing. They were ecstatic to be grandparents although they would have liked if their son was more involved in his daughters life but he didn’t know he was a father either.
“Poppy?” Sutton spoke bringing her head up to stare at you. You nodded as she pushed her toys away to ran towards you.
“Can you put your dolls away?” You asked barely done with half the sentence before she haphazardly shoving them in the large crate for toys.
“Come on Mama!” Sutton exclaimed shoving her arms into her tiny purple fleece Barbie jacket. Her head grasped tightly in yours to the stool near the door, it had been there since she was baby.
It the spot she would sit on to put her shoes on and it helped to teach her how to put them on and soon you would be teaching her how to knot her shoes as well. God you never thought you could love someone as much as you loved your little girl. You just wanted the best for her whether it meant choking back fear to take her to her grandparents or saving up money to show her London in a few years.
“Do you think Aunty Tay will be there?” Sutton questioned curiously. For some reason she had a high intelligence for her age and had bypassed many language milestones to the point she sounds years beyond her age.
“No sweetheart. She’s at her home.”
“Will we ever visit her?”
Your mind froze at her question given that Taylor had dropped the comment that Noah was living with her and her boyfriend. The conversation ended swiftly when Sutton had crawled into the room towards you. He was never mentioned in her presence nor yours anymore once Taylor saw there was no chance for you wanting him back anymore.
“That’s a long ways away.”
“But Lomdon is more.”
“It’s London sweetheart.” You spoke pressing a kiss to her forehead, “Let’s get you in your carseat.”
“Grams and Grumpa said a boys name when I was at their house. Noah.” Sutton spoke from the backseat of the car, “I was playing hide and see with Aunty.”
Your hands been white on the steering wheel you replied shakily, “I’m sure that wasn’t what they said.”
“Hm. Okay.” She shrugged turning to stare out the window, “Can I teach Poppy how to roll over?”
“I’m sure we can do that.” You grinned at her.
It was a fifteen minute drive from your place in Atlantis to Boynton where the Centineo’s still lived. It was nice house settled in the outskirts of the town often that had a man hanging around, a security guard that Greg wasn’t fond of. Apparently Noah was nervous his parents would be hounded by fans which they never had been since he moved away. Speaking of the family, Kellee was on the porch waving as you pulled into the driveway.
“Grams!” Sutton shouted as Kellee came over to the car. In mere seconds Sutton on in her arms hugging her, “Missed you.”
“Oh we missed you guys more.” She replied pressing a kiss to Sutton’s little cheek. Quickly she pulled you into a hug and ushering you to the house.
“You look gorgeous.” Kellee grinned towards you, “Did you get a haircut?”
“Sutton had hers down but threw a fit when we got there. We made a deal that if I had one first then she would.”
“Mama got to sit in the car! I sat on the unicorn!” Sutton excited waved both her hands almost hitting her Grams in the face.
“A unicorn!” Greg gasped from the entry way, “My granddaughter saw a mysterious animal! Oh man I can’t believe I missed it!”
“Grumpa!” Sutton exclaimed as if she hadn’t seen them in a few days, “It was pink and purple! It was so pretty! I raced the horses too and I won!”
“Of course you did.” Greg chuckled giving her a high five, “Poppy’s in the living room waiting for you-“
Sutton disappeared into the spacious room to the sound of Poppy’s excited barking, the two were best friends, while you were brought into the kitchen. You had a lot of sight into the living room to keep an eye on your little girl.
“Noah got a massive part in a movie coming up.” Kellee nonchalantly spoke pouring herself a cup of ice tea, “Some remake of Charlie’s Angels.”
“That’s nice for him.” You blankly spoke staring at the clear glass.
“It’s gonna be in the theatres September 2019.” She continued, “It’s very exciting!”
“Sweetheart not now.” Greg shook his head carefully before sending an apologetic smile to you. You waved it off, “Now hows our daughter doing?”
You snorted, they were always somehow referencing how you were apart of the family given Sutton’s relation. You stopped denying it when they were the first to show up at the hospital when you went into labour.
“I’m doing good. I got a promotion to manager at The Queen’s Pavilion now, night classes are terrible.” You rolled your eyes leaning forward.
“Congratulations on the being Manager!” Greg clapped quickly, “That’s amazing.”
“Thanks. My hours are a little more flexible and concrete than the waitress shifts.” You sighed. You had worked at the upscale restaurant for years and with the former manager quitting to be a full time Mom she recommended you.
“We should cele-“
“No! Noah you-“
“It’s my house. I don’t need to knock.” The familiar husky voice spoke turning you sheet white as you ran into the living room. You quickly scooped up Sutton to hide against the wall in the kitchen. Your frantic eyes flittering between Greg and Kellee.
“Noah! You don’t live here anymore!”
“Taylor can you be quiet I want some peace and quiet. Something I haven’t had in so long!”
“It’s not my fault you skyrocketed after Sierra Burgess and All The Boys.” Taylor exclaimed trying to move in front of Noah.
“What is going on?” He spoke confused at the puppy in the living room, the Barbie jacket in the entry room and Taylor desperately keeping him away.
“Noah!” Kellee exclaimed high pitched, “How are you sweetheart.”
All the while Taylor had gripped the jacket tightly to move around Noah and her mom towards the kitchen. As she hugged Greg she inconspicuously handed over her niece’s jacket to you and you were racing out of the back door.
“Mama? Who was that?”
“Uh.”
“I thought there wasn’t a Noah?” She spoke confused while your strapped in the car seat as fast as you could. God you wished Noah had bought a fancy race car so you could hear the car a mile away instead of the jeep sitting next to your car.
“I don-“
“Lying is a sin Mama. Josie told me that.” She proudly spoke of her friend in day care. The same Josie who was the daughter of the Preacher’s son and wife who graduated with you.
“Sometimes people tell white lies-“
The ding of your cell phone made you look down at the next message.
You felt the judgement clear as day even from the screen and you weren’t surprised given that Taylor had to be around him day in and day out. She sometimes told you it made her uncomfortable and sick to lie to her brother.
You were just pulling out of the driveway when the boy in question came out onto the porch staring as your vehicle pulled away. Thank god you bought a more safe vehicle early in your pregnancy with the little funds you had saved for college. The college fund turned into the saving for buying baby things.
“Mama is that him?” She spoke through the tinted windows.
“Should we stop for some nuggets?”
“And ice cream?!” She excited spoke forgetting about the man in her grandparents house. You felt a sharp stab of guilt of shame for bribing your daughter.
The Queen’s Pavilion was upscale but definitely was fine if your daughter was dropped off to the restaurant by your best friend. Clara was a few years older than you with a son the same age as Sutton. They went to the same daycare but pickup time was always an hour before your shift ended on the days Sutton went. There were your parents that looked after her on the days she didn’t have daycare and you worked your longer shifts on the busier days.
“Table for five.” You barely heard the voices as the hostess asked them to sit for a moment to find them a table. You still had a few minutes before Sutton would be here, “It looks more-“
“Upscale?” You spoke signing a paper in your leather clipboard before closing it shut.
Instead of answering the voice went quiet in shock. You had barely looked up before hazel eyes met yours sending a shiver of fear down your spine. You had barely opened your mouth before the door opened in a fury.
“Mama!” Sutton yelled slamming into your legs. You kneeled quickly.
“Hi baby.” You grinned scooping her close in your arms to nestle in close, “How was daycare?”
“I have a a lost tooth!”
“Do you mean loose tooth?” You asked brushing a back a curl of her hair dancing in front of eye as her breathing moved it.
“Yeah!”
The sharp intake of breath reminded you that Noah was standing there watching the interaction of you with his unknown daughter. The little girl with his brown curls and easily charming smile. He didn’t need a test to know that he had a child, it was there in the little girls features.
“Clara can you take Emmie for some ice cream.” Clara knew instinctively that when you used the rare nickname you had for Sutton it wasn’t good.
“Of course. Hey Sutton want some mint chip?” Clara asked holding her hand out for her while holding her sons hand as well.
“I’ll meet you there. Thanks.” You half smiled at her. You quickly sent Noah a look before turning you back on him to walk to your office. The steady footsteps following behind you. The moment the door closed behind him he was staring at you shocked.
“How old is she?”
“Four years old.” You sighed leaning against the mahogany wood desk.
“Why didn’t you tell me. I’m assuming she’s mine given her age.”
“I tried. I found out I was pregnant week and a half after we broke up.” You spoke picking up the photo of a three month old Sutton, “I…uh…promised myself that I would call you but if you didn’t call me back I wouldn’t contact you ever again.”
“Why?”
“You were this upcoming new star and when you didn’t call back a week later I decided it was for the best. Especially when I had seen the articles on your new love. I didn’t keep the pregnancy secret for long. Your parents kept their distance but they knew and when I went into early labour they were in the hospital when my parents were traveling back.”
“They knew?”
“You’d have to ask them why they kept it from you. Even when I asked them to keep Sutton from you they had every right to tell you.”
“What’s her name?”
“Sutton Emerson Y/L/N. She loves Barbies, marvel heroes, and Poppy.”
“The puppy at my parents.”
“Birthday gift for her. It was surprise and the only stipulation was they keep Poppy at their house.”
Noah was silent following that trying to wrap his head around that he had four year old daughter that you kept from him. It hurt him that he had missed out on everything involving her and he regretted not fighting for you.
“Look be in her life or don’t but don’t get her hopes up about having a Dad. You can cause me pain but you break her heart, I will hurt you.” You vehemently spoke while standing straight up, “I have to pick her up. She has dance in twenty minutes.”
You brushed by Noah frozen form while opening the door to see Greg standing there silently. Whatever he had to say was between him and his son and you wanted nothing of that conversation.
“Don’t break anything.” You spoke to them while exiting the room.
Greg continued into the room where Noah stood staring at the baby picture of Sutton.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Noah mumbled barely looking up at his father.
“You didn’t deserve to know about her.” Greg simply spoke, “I came out a few weeks after you broke up with Y/N. I was coming to give you a piece of my mind and tell you that you had to step up and be a Dad.”
“You never came out.” Noah replied confused.
“I did. I came to your place only to start following the trail of plastic cups and garbage to find you with a group of people. I spoke with you for a few minutes but quickly realized you were too fucked up to even know me.”
Noah barely remembered the years he had partied from the amount of shit he had ingested to soothe his aches. He must have reached the peak of his partying in the aftermath of the breakup when his Dad came out.
“You were drunk, high and had that girl handing off your arm. The girl you dated for a while even if I knew you loved Y/N. I didn’t recognize my son anymore and I decided on the spot that you had no right to come into Sutton’s world and destroy it like you did your own life.”
“I’m sober now. Have been for over a year.” Noah gently defended himself with distaste for his mistakes.
“I know that.” Greg replied, “Yet I also know many people with fame that relapse easily and destroy everything they touch.”
“I won’t. I can’t let that little girl grow up without a Dad.”
“I hope you can convince everyone.” Greg finished, “We got a table. We should rejoin the family.”
“Mama? Is Noah my Daddy?” Sutton questioned a few weeks into Noah’s stay in his parents home. You had been drinking drinking when you started choking on it.
“What sweetheart?” You coughed.
“Well Noah is Aunty Tay’s brother that means Grumpa and Grams are his parents. Does that mean he’s my Daddy?” Sutton asked quietly looking down at her dollhouse. It still floored you on how gifted she was at just four years old.
She had placed her male and female dolls at the table in her kitchen along with a little baby in the high chair. You didn’t have to guess why she had done that when you had a feeling the lack of a father and watching other families had settled in her mind.
You moved from the table to sit on the ground beside her to pick up a doll you would use when you played with her. You brushed the dolls hair into your hands thinking of a way to approach this.
“Are you sad you don’t have a Daddy?” You questioned beginning a simple braid in the dolls hair.
“Sometimes.” Sutton spoke completely shattering your heart into pieces, “Did he want me?”
“He didn’t know about you. Before you were born I didn’t know about you. Your Daddy and I dated together for many years when we were younger.” You pushed the doll aside when Sutton crawled into your lap, “We broke up a few weeks before I knew about you. I tried to tell him but we had no contact anymore. He would have wanted you from the minute he knew I was pregnant.”
“He would?” Sutton questioned leaning against your chest with her thumb slowly moving to her mouth.
“Of course he would. Sutton you are the most kind beautiful little girl. Anyone would love you from the moment they see you. I’m so sorry you didn’t have a Daddy.”
“It’s okay Mommy. I have you.”
“Do you want to know Noah?” You asked gently placing your hands on her sweet rosy cheeks.
“Would it hurt you?”
“No baby.” You quickly soothed her fear while kissing her forehead as gently as you could with one stray tear racing down your cheek, “I’ll be right back okay.”
“Mhm.” Sutton replied already turning back to her dolls. You quickly stepped into the hall just out of her earshot to call the number you hadn’t thought of in years.
“Hello?”
“Hey Noah. It’s…uh Y/N.” You spoke quietly.
“Oh hey. Something wrong?”
“Yeah.”
“What is it? Is it Sutton?” Noah jumped in the topic quickly as he scanned the room for his keys, “Do you need me to come?”
“I kept her Daddy away from her. I should have done that. Would you like to come over to meet your daughter?”
“I don’t know. I don’t want to cause problems.”
“Noah, she knows your her father. She just asked and she wants to know you.”
The gasp before his next words, “I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”
“See you soon.”
You smiled leaning against the wall to watch Sutton move from her dollhouse to the cupboard where you kept the colouring books. With a tentative smile you reached into the higher compartment she couldn’t quite reach yet for the crayons.
“Thanks Momma.” She grinned, “Will you cooler with me?”
While you coloured with her Noah was rushing around his childhood home choosing a pair of clothes that he felt worthy of meeting his little girl. He was next in the bathroom re-shaving his face, he was too nervous to know his skin was smooth from a few hours ago, with a shaky hand. He gave himself a pep talk before he was driving to the address you had texted him.
Five minutes in the parked car he stared at the red front door mumbling words to himself just before the curtain shifted. With a smile from you he was climbing out of the car holding a small box and started shuffling to the door. It opened before he was even on the porch step of the tiny home.
“Hi.” You spoke.
“Hi.” He spoke nervously, “Are you sure this is okay?”
You nodded ushering him inside to where he was just skirting around you when you spoke up, “Promise to not hurt her?”
“Never.” He vowed as his eyes caught sight of Sutton at the kitchen table swinging her legs just barely able to see the colour book in front of her.
“Sutton.” You gently spoke to the four year old. Her attention turning from her colouring book to you, “Someone’s here for you.”
“Is that my Daddy?” Sutton asked inspecting Noah as she had for a long time, “He has my hair!”
And when Noah grinned she excitedly continued,“You have my smile too!”
“Hi.” Noah breathed kneeling in front of her chair, “You can call me No-“
“Can I call you Daddy instead?” Sutton whispered pressing her tiny hand on his cheek where he leaned into her hand with closed eyes. The soft smile growing melted your heart.
“Only if you want to.”
“I missed you Daddy.” Sutton mumbled dropping her crayon to hug his neck. His arms wrapped around her tiny body.
“I missed you more than anything Baby.” Noah breathlessly spoke turning his attention to you with watery eyes.
Sutton’s future grew more bright in that moment she had craved since she knew about families. Yours did too because those feelings you had for Noah since you were thirteen never went away. The same future Noah hoped he would get to share with you as a family.

If you had been told you would be married by twenty-one years old following a harsh breakup when you were just discovering boys you would have sighed longingly at the mere thought. What girl didn't want to be married young and have a handsome husband until you were in high school. The years of awkward puberty, changing voices and developing cliques from the moment you were at high school orientation.
In freshmen year you found your best friend who you would share secrets, makeup, and clothes with until somehow you both couldn't fit into the other's clothing. The joys of having different cup sizes and different shaped curves; that was okay because you shared the other things instead. Her name was Allison with gorgeous long dark hair and glittering brown eyes, well they were until she started eating on the bleachers with her boyfriend. The boyfriend that carefully and slowly separated Lis from her friends and family. Over the months you would try to speak, but Lis would walk away to her boyfriend's side with sadness etched into her form. The entirety of Sophomore year was spent with a new group of friends, and a boyfriend on the football team, a cliche of course, with big blue eyes and hair you swore was spun by angels.
He was your everything. Until one day he wasn't. Apparently, he needed tutoring for his English Lit class where you couldn't help him in as he took the AP class. It was Allison that found you staring in disgust in the tutoring center on her way to the bathroom. The same Allison that knew you needed her more than anything.
It was Allison who brought you to the police station to report that a teacher was having illicit relations with her student. The same Allison who protected you from your seething ex-boyfriend screaming profanity and threats on his way out to stalk the police station the teacher was awaiting bail. The teacher who was teaching him the Kamasutra's many sex positions as if it was one of the assigned books in class.
Allison would soon explain precisely why she closed off from everyone and you wouldn't take her to the police station instead. You swore off relationships together. That was it you believed.
Until you met him.
It was your favourite time of the year when the leaves started turning different colours just before they would start falling off the tree branches. God, you loved the fall and what it would bring each year with the pumpkin patches and candy on every shelf in the stores. It was also the most significant time to lay in the park on one of the last days that would be warm enough to avoid layers but not cold enough to need thick leggings and a sweater.
You were reading among the children running around the lush green grass with footballs, baseballs with gloves and a few frisbees. You were in the middle of some novel you had been recommended a while back when you were still finding yourself as a soon to be senior in high school. Brushing the threshold of adulthood. It was a book about finding yourself again in dark times as a memoir by Cheryl Strayed.
"Hey."
"Hi." You spoke without really thinking about it. Your eyes still glued to the words written in the battered book from the many times you had read it since you first picked up.
"What are you reading?"
"How to convince someone to leave them alone without murdering them." You spoke once more humming as you found your favourite sentence of the chapter.
"Who is it by?"
"A wonderful author named 'Screw Off'."
"I've heard of them." Dog-earing the page you looked up to see the shadow casting down on your blanket.
"Who are you?"
"Noah." He spoke sitting down on the edge of the blanket showcasing a pair of black jeans worn beyond belief with the skin of his knees showing through the frayed holes, you saw it wasn't bought worn either.
"You look like shit." You spoke when you finally looked up to see his face. There were bags under his eyes that looked as if they were permanent. You could smell the cigarette smoke on his clothes, and a stain you believed was some form of alcohol on his shirt.
"Thanks. Really awesome to hear a stranger say that." Noah snarked uncomfortably, "Can I just sit here? You seem cool."
"Are you hungover? It's Monday morning man." You spoke giving him your full attention.
"I'm avoiding the third degree from my sister." He sighed throwing himself down to look up at the sky, "She was blowing up my phone all night and until it went dead a few minutes ago. I love her, but she needs to back off."
"She's doing it because she loves you. Be happy about that. Be happy she cares enough to do something about it."
"What's your name?"
“Y/N" You merely spoke once more turning your attention to the clear blue sky.
"Well Yn you don't know the reasons behind my irritation." Noah snarked once more, "What are you reading?"
"A memoir of a woman that almost lost everything and decided to do something about it. She went on this great crazy adventure hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. She didn't have any guidance or experience, but she did-"
"She sounds stupid to go out without any training." Noah interrupted.
"She needed to do it to find herself."
"She could do that anywhere."
"Look man. Just because your life is shit doesn't make you an expert on how people should deal with their issues. How can you discover yourself in a society that has the internet at the simplest touch on their screens? She hiked because it gave her time to think without the disease of social media." You swiftly started gathering things up, "I don't know why you're drowning your demons in drugs, alcohol and partying in some typical teenage angst but honestly sounds like you need to find yourself."
"No, I-"
"Turn your phone off, talk with your sister and for god sake stop the self-medicating bullshit of drugs your 'friends' give you and the alcohol to numb the pain." You spat, "I don't understand people. You should find healthy alternatives. Gave a wonderful day you shitty person."
That was it. The toxicity of the 21st generation officially shattered your beliefs in humankind. Apparently, you were among the few handfuls of people that didn't judge and be terrible people in general. You wished you never met Noah even if you only interacted for a few minutes at most.
Noah stared after you quietly until you were a speck in the distant parking lot dragging a blanket and book in hand. It was then that Noah started the metamorphosis that would save him even if he wouldn't know for another few years. He began by buying "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed in the nearest bookstore. However, he would toss it in the back of his closet when his girlfriend Angeline texted about a party.
Two years later Noah would be trying to find his old iPod after his current one broke when he saw the sharp corner of something. Buried under clothing, near ancient scripts and unless items sat the book from two years back when he met that girl in the park who tore him a new one.
Despite the massive rager, his friend was throwing that included strippers, drugs, and a shit ton of alcohol of every kind something switched inside him. He forgot the iPod and sat down on the bed in his room to crack open the unread book. By the second chapter, he had texted his friends explaining he was done living the way he was before blocking the numbers and deleting the contacts. He took up healthy alternatives while finally opening up to his sister.tearfully.
September of that year you were picking up a few candles before you wandered over to the aisles of books you had always loved. You immediately went to the spiritual aisle where you perused the rows until a tan hand reached around you.
"This one is amazing." The hand gently removed a book as if it was an injured bird in dire need of help. You took the book from the person, "It's one of my favourites by far."
"'The Celestine Prophecy' by James Redfield ." You mumbled turning to face the person. There standing with a fresh complexion and calmness in his eyes was the boy from years before. The guy standing in front of you was the pessimistic asshole from the park.
"What the hell are you doing here?" You snapped.
"So you remember me." Noah spoke shoving his hands into his pants pockets, "I'm really sorry about that. I was a complete insensitive dick. I want to thank you though. Without you, I might be dead or on the cusp."
"How did I help you."
"You tore into me about self-medicating with drugs and alcohol. I ended up buying that book twenty minutes after you left the park. I didn't read it until I found it two months ago in the back of my closest. I swore off alcohol and partying." Noah quickly spoke as he blocked your path of escaping, "I'm completely sober now. I stopped smoking, drugs, alcohol and everything bad. I changed from relying on anxiety medication to working out routinely and doing yoga."
"You did?"
"In the four months I've been sober I've never felt so refreshed, awake and inspired." Noah grinned, "I have you to thank you for that. I'd think to take you out as a thank you."
You decided on the spot that Fall was definitely your favourite season, and Noah was the first person to crack your guarded heart. He was the first boy that awakened feelings you had felt since you first started dating your first boyfriend in high school.
By Thanksgiving, you were so in love with each other even if it seemed impossible in such a short amount of time. You spent as much time together as you could with his acting career and your school work and most nights you traded books on so many topics.
November was the official month Noah would blame the weather for the amount of cuddling he demanded. You didn't mind even when he tried to bribe you into coming to his family's Thanksgiving. He won.
By twenty-one you were engaged and married during October, you were adamant with your love of Fall and the season you got together with Noah. The first handful of months you were utterly wrapped in your love bubble surrounded by your animals in your house with your husband. You lived in blissed from the wedding until that fateful day you discovered you were pregnant.
Was it the most convenient time to be having a baby with Noah's exploding career? No, but when was it ever convenient to have a baby. You loved Dot from the pregnancy test you took.
Thanksgiving 2018
You hated your body while simultaneously adoring the bump you had grown over the months. The problem was trying to find clothing that flattered you was impossible. To the point, you stood in front of the full-length mirror in a bright orange cable knit sweater and maternity jeans.
"You look good in Orange.” Your husband spoke from the entrance of the ensuite.
"I look like a pumpkin Noah." You huffed crossing your arms.
"Pumpkin is the best part of Thanksgiving! You know that." Noah exclaimed pulling you into his chest. He was completely over the moon feeling the firm bump on his abdomen.
"I'm allergic to pumpkin." You emotionlessly spoke staring at the tiny stain on his lazy day shirt. The blue one that brought more vibrancy to the colour in his eyes with the minimal holes in the material. The sweater that mysteriously would reappear in the wash every time you tried to throw it out.
"Okay, gloom and doom we have places to be," Noah spoke yanking his shirt off by the neck of it. Your eyes scanning his excellent form that never failed you arouse you, especially with the pregnancy hormones, to his amusement.
"You know you can't do that!" You whined stomping your foot.
"Sweetheart we really don't have time for-"
"You say, and we won't be leaving until I've had my fill of you." You warned him as he gripped your hand to sit you down on the chair in the foyer.
He kneeled in front of you with your boots, once that fit your swollen ankles, to carefully place them up for you while grabbing the backpack he had lovingly filled with everything he read a pregnancy may need. A pair of flats that were black, a couple of dressy slippers along with some personal hygiene wipes explicitly made for pregnancy to be safe for baby. A few pairs of underwear just in case along with natural lotion and scrunchies.
"I love you." You mumbled looking down at the man that had ruined you for anyone else. All he did was grin up at you with his hands settled on your baby bump to press a lingering kiss to your unborn child.
"God I love you both so much." Noah breathlessly spoke all the while resting his nose against your belly, "I'm going to raise you to know you don't have to be a boy to be a knight in shining armour to save someone. Your Momma was my knight, she saved me from myself when I didn't know I needed to be saved."
"We're going to be late." You choked out as your emotions got the best of you.
Noah helped you get settled in the passenger seat of the SUV he bought mere weeks after learning about your pregnancy. The baby's room had been set up for months now with the door closed permanently to keep the baby's existence a secret. There was something about surprising your family with a joining member that had you keeping your lips sealed.
You were really early at Noah's parents, you traded locations each year for holidays, where they were still out for a while. As you waited in the car, he grabbed the box holding the high chair to set it up at the long dining room table. By the time he finished, you were waddling to the front door intent on getting to the bathroom. You struggled the whole time before coming out to find your in-laws just coming through the entrance.
"Noah!" Kellee exclaimed rushing to pull him into her arms, "I missed you!"
"Mom! You're squeezing too tight." Noah spoke squirming in her arms, "We had lunch a few days ago!"
"Well sorry for missing you." She sighed pushing back, "I still can't believe you bought a house here!"
"Hey, son," Greg spoke pulling him into a quick hug.
"Hey, Dad. We have a question, do you think we have enough room for another person to join us?"
"I guess. We can make room." Your mother-in-law spoke already trying to plan it out, "When are they arriving?"
It was that moment your immediate family walked into the room just hearing the end of her sentence. It seemed no one had noticed the high chair just yet.
"They're here already," Noah spoke with a half smile. You came around the couch that had hidden your stomach just as Taylor's eyes settled on the paper resting against your bump, 'Mommy ate a pumpkin seed'.
"Oh my god."
"Are you?"
"Seven months. Noah thought it would be funny to wear orange and be a pumpkin to announce it."
"Congratulations!" Mom exclaimed yanking you into her arms tightly. She leaned back to gaze down, "How did you keep it from us?!"
"By keeping busy and strategically already sitting in any cafe and the weather is great for baggy sweaters of Noah's." You answered swiftly. They all blinked in shock before crowding closer to ask more questions on the pregnancy.
"When are you due?" Taylor asked sitting on the couch near you. Kellee and your mom barred you from the kitchen with Taylor moving between rooms. Noah was watching some sports game with the rest of the people.
"Mid January." You grinned, "Your brother is best. He had this bag packed of everything. He researched brands of baby clothing and sheets that are the best for baby's skin. The nursery is set up with a bassinet in our room for the first two or three months."
"You're good for him," Tay spoke with a small grin.
"He's good to us." You breathed staring at his glowing complexion. Without knowing the rest of the world believed he was perfect and fought tooth and nail to defend your little family against the haters.
With a gleaming smile, Noah looked over to you holding his phone in his hand as your own pinged in your pocket. Glaring on the screen was simple from Twitter.
@noahcent has mentioned you.
