Lowkey seen some posts like this and I'm putting in my absolutely unprompted two cents.

I personally did not join the fandom from Unsolved, which I feel like is the case for a lot of the people with a problem with Watcher since 2024. I saw Puppet History and fell down the hyperfixation rabbit hole from there earlier this year, so I had 0 expectations as to how the new shows would make me feel compared to Unsolved.

When people say they hate the production of the new shows, that they need to go back to "two guys at a desk with blue and yellow text" I think that's kind of a misunderstanding of 1. how Unsolved was produced (more money than you'd think, they went to THREE locations, one out of the country, in one episode, and clearly just had a less visible large crew) and 2. what they actually liked about the show.

Because Ryan and Shane are still there, they're still bantering; the only thing that's really that different is the viewer. Because it's not 2018 anymore, and you're not going to feel like it's 2018 again, and it's not the job of content creators to keep feeding you nostalgia. I think the D&P relaunch went over so well because they're doing the same thing they've always done (not that I'm saying that's a bad thing, love them forever, I'll watch them play video games till the day I die), but Watcher changed it a little, because they had to in separating from Buzzfeed, and that's what progress is about!

The problem lies, in my opinion, that the parasocial relationship was broken for a lot of people. If you got to 'hang out' with Shane and Ryan during Unsolved for free, then you feel like you were friends. Your friends wouldn't ask you to pay money to help them still hang out with you, so suddenly that illusion is broken, and they're providing a service, not being your pal. And frankly, they have been providing that service and trying to stay afloat in a very gentle, reasonable way. I have been in a VERY parasocial fandom, one that was encouraged by the creator (shoutout to the 2020 minecraft trenches), and it was devestatingly hard to break that, but if you really love the content and those creating it outside of just what they can do for you personally, and more what they can do for the art that you love, then reframe your expecations to be more in line with what the relationship between creator and viewer really is, and love the one you're with.

The joy in the content is there, baby, come back and enjoy it for exactly what it is!
