continued sketchbook work from my project assessing empathy in popular (internet) culture A5, BRUSH PENS, COPIC MARKERS, 3B PENCIL, INK BRUSH PEN, INK PEN
these drawings are based on Gnome Child, a Runescape meme (2014), Simpson Wave (present day) and emoji culture (present day).
Gnome Child is a type of non-player character featured in the massively multiplayer online roleplaying video game Runescape that has gained notoriety for its tendencies to respond with bizarre and philosophical quotes when approached by the player. I really enjoyed the shape (or, lackthereof) of gnomechild, and also the existential nature behind the meme, often placed side by isde with the phrase, “BORN TOO LATE TO EXPLORE THE EARTH, BORN TO EARLY TO EXPLORE THE GALAXY, BORN JUST IN TIME TO BROWSE DANK MEMES.”
the pixellated nature of this image, while interesting, was particularly hard to convert into a drawn illustration, so I spent a lot of time fixating on the economic shape of his head, feminising his appearance as I did with Kermit and obsessing over the text.
the Bart Simpson illustration I did was far more successful. Simpson Wave is a trend that encompasses slowed down music, often vaporwave music (80s) with “bad” quality videos of Simpsons episodes from the nineties. more recently, these videos have been appearing on instagram to convey the feeling of love and infatuation, using heart emojis and nostalgic lyrics such as “Take her back to the crib and watch Yu-Gi-Oh”.
