PREFACE (What to know): 

The big reason this MU was brought to my attention was through Therewolf Media’s commissioned track (Therewolf Media - "Sword Art Matrix" | Neo vs Kirito). I loved the idea when I gave it just a tiny bit of thought, which I will elaborate on later in my personal reasons. It helped that a little less than a year later, Brandon Yates released his own commissioned track for this MU (A Real Life (Neo vs Kirito) [The Matrix vs Sword Art Online] ft. @lnfotron & @NahTony).

As is customary, I will be looking at both at their strongest, so that means I will be analyzing Neo from Matrix: Resurrection and Kirito from the end of Alicization. This means that Neo will have his powers up to the end of Resurrection and Kirito will have his abilities and weapons from SAO, GGO, Alicization, ALO, and Star King. However, for my personal preferences, I will make Neo look like he did in the first movie and Kirito will have his Aincrad look. Again, that’s just for the looks.

Also, I will try to look at both the novels and SAO anime for feats. The main SAO canon includes the original light novel as well as SAO Progressive and GGO. However, because of the extensive list of materials and the fact that I was originally writing this in the middle of exams, I am bound to misinterpret, misunderstand, or misconstrue a feat from SAO, and I simply cannot cover everything.

Also, Neo will start off with some guns like in the lobby shootout from the first movie. It is one of the most iconic scenes in the movie, and while guns are not a standard part of his arsenal from the second movie onward, it would feel like a missed opportunity if Neo doesn’t get to shoot bullets.

(SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD)

I watched a video that recapped the events of the Alicization arc, and holy cow, there is so much that happened and the tech that makes the arc happen is so advanced. I know a lot happened with Kirito’s sort of mind wipe, the Administrator, Alice, Kirito’s supposed backstory in this new world… It’s just so much… In the end, it gives me more material to work with.

WHY: 

Core connections (What do they have in common):

1. Both start their stories as young males with black hair and pale skin. They have skills in hacking and/or coding, but are also loners or don't have many friends to speak of if they even have them at all.

2. Both also have participated in game development. Neo was a beta tester for SAO and is a part-time tester for Rath. Neo, during his watch under the Analyst, created the Matrix Trilogy which were highly revolutionary video games.

3. Both started their stories by being stuck in a virtual world in which they were fully immersed in. Death in the digital world meant death in reality as well. The names and black coat-wearing avatars they donned in these coded creations became the way we know these protagonists.

4. Said appearances were established in the first installations of their respective series. Their looks have changed over the years, but when you mention their names, people will think of Neo from the first movie and Kirito from the Aincrad Arc.

5. Both have special powers and abilities that let them manipulate the code that makes up the reality of their computerized worlds. Neo is famously the One, an anomaly in the Matrix, allowing him to see and control the code of the Matrix. Kirito is famously known as a dual wielder in a videogame where most people only use one weapon at a time, and then obtains more powers and skills out the wazoo as his story continues. These powers make them truly unique and one-of-a-kind.

6. The themes of their stories essentially tell us that relationships that we build in these simulations can be just as powerful as relationships we build in real life, and they are things worth fighting for. They started as loners but through their struggles grow and form strong bonds with people that allow them fully unleash their maximum potential, namely through their romances. When they disconnect from virtual reality, their relationships don’t get any weaker.

7. The powers in their digital world almost translated to the real world. Look at the end of Revolutions when Neo simply started to glow like an angel or at the end of Reloaded when he shut off the Sentinels. In SAO, look at what Sugou Nobuyuki was planning regarding the manipulation of memories and emotions.

8. Aesthetic compliments. While both wear black coats and pants, Neo’s manipulation of the Matrix is typically black and green in color, matching the color of the Matrix. Kirito’s black coat is complemented by his light blue swords, and the aesthetic of the code of his series is either blue or orange.

9. While both can use guns effectively, Kirito’s thing is weapons, namely swords complimented by spells, gaming skills, and fast reflexes, contrasting Neo’s prominent usage of martial arts that were literally downloaded into his brain and his control over the Matrix. It’s a sort of battle of opposites.

Personal reasons (Why I want this battle/like this MU): 

The first Matrix movie is one of my favorite movies of all time, and the Aincrad Arc was one of the first few things I started to watch when I was getting into anime around 2014-2016. During that time, The Film Theorists were occasionally releasing new installments in their now deleted series Film Legends, and their second episode was on The Matrix, and that video got me interested in the actual movie, briefly digesting what makes the movie great from its narrative, the visual details, the context that surrounded the movie, and most of all, the philosophical themes. Also, The Matrix was one of the first action movies I truly enjoyed, and I think it got me into classic action movies like Karate Kid, The Terminator, The Predator, Last Action Hero, Dirty Harry, and Aliens as well as anime. As the world marches on and technology progresses, the idea of artificial intelligence and fully immersive VR seen in both series starts to become real, even if little by little, and these two series absolutely fascinate me because of that. They’re akin to time capsules of what their creators thought technology would be like, either in the near future like SAO or in the far future like The Matrix.

I began writing this during an exam period in late 2024, and was really stressed. Instead of doing whatever projects or assignments I had due, I was writing this and my All Might VS Homelander suggestion at the same time. Something Witty Entertainment’s SAO Abridged and the fight scenes from the first Matrix movie helped distract me from my panic, and I sometimes found myself wishing for an escape into a virtual world of my own, like a Matrix or SAO that doesn’t kill me. I ended up playing BotW from zero, so I almost imagined my own journey of getting stuck in a fantasy world because of VR.

THE FIGHT:

Art and animation: 

Considering Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax gave us sprites for Kirito, this fight will most likely be done with sprites, like in the One Minute Melee of Guts VS Kirito. This is further supported by the art bellow by OriginTheHero:

I don’t imagine this fight being in 3D, but I can imagine it hand-drawn. Many people don’t know that a fourth Matrix movie was released in 2003 after Revolutions but before Resurrections called “The Animatrix”, an anthology of nine short films all animated with a different style, from 3D (“Final Flight of the Osiris” and “Matriculated”) to a bunch of 2D films (“World Record”, “A Detective Story”, and probably the best one, “The Second Renaissance”) and there was even Matrix comic books (“The Matrix Comics”), so a hand-drawn Neo is not unrealistic. There’s also “Enter the Matrix” and “The Matrix Awakens”, both of which are in 3D, and the latter even has a 3D render of Neo, but it’s realistic, which would clash with whatever 3D model there exists of Kirito due to the SAO games.

However, considering that The Matrix is known for its martial arts choreography, then an animator like Torrian is needed to get the most out of this matchup, so while sprites is the most realistic option with some 2D bits sprinkled in like in Magneto VS Tetsuo for select moments and a hand-drawn battle would be a visual spectacle, 3D would be best for Neo.

Voice acting:

This is the first time I mentioned voice acting. I wonder if Liam would be Neo’s voice actor since he’s a bit of a vocal chameleon on the show, but for Kirito, I think they’d pull a TFS and get MasakoX, the voice actor for Kirito from the internet-famous Sword Art Online Abridged from the YouTube channel Something Witty Entertainment, to voice the Black Swordsman. I don't think Kirito will be written to have SAOA Kirito’s sarcastic and movie-referencing personality, but it would be funny all the same to have the mostly serious Neo contrast against SAOA Kirito’s jerk personality.

Setup:

“Link start!”

Kazuto has activated the Nerve Gear and he passed through the white tunnel and the colored neon streaks. He awoke standing in the middle of the sunny Colinia arena in SAO where he fought Heathcliff. My, that was a long time ago. He looked in front of him and there stood his foe. He was wearing shades, a black shirt and pants, black boots, and a sweet black coat with long coattails like the first one he wore. Kirito thought that he looked cool, but he also had deja vú… His foe looked like the protagonist of a movie he’d seen. Both immediately make eye contact and walk towards the center of the sun drenched arena, stopping within three meters from each other. Kirito opens the menu and sends a duel request. “Ready?” The man simply said, “Yeah.” and accepted the request. Kirito draws his swords and gets ready, and Neo enters a martial arts stance as the timer above them starts to count down.

DUEL START! / FIGHT!

1. Kirito slashes at Neo, who simply dodges the slashes until he then blocks one of the swords like in the fight with the Merovigian’s goons from Reloaded. Neo pushes the sword away with his other hand and using the momentum, spins and lets out a kick, knocking Kirito back. Both, however, notice Neo’s hand bleeding. “So he’s just a man…” Kirito thinks… Good. He won’t have to deal with Heathcliff’s Immortal Object nonsense.

2. Kirito rushes in again, but Neo outstretches his hand and draws a sword from his bag and quickly parries Kirito’s slash. Fast as Kirito may be, Neo is just as fast, parrying any and all slashes. Kirito gets in a little too close, however, and gets kicked away by Neo. Neo then goes on the offensive, continuously slashing at Kirito’s hands in an attempt to disarm him, and Kirito attempts parries and counters.

3. The arena begins to change, the ground shaking, morphing from the arena of Colinia to the cliffs of Alfheim where Kirito fought Eugene. The leap away from each other, Neo grabbing his bag. Kirito takes advantage of the terrain shift, sprouting his fairy wings and takes to the sky. Neo follows, the audience looking upwards toward the spectacle. They resume their duel: for every slash that Kirito attempts, Neo has a parry, but every counterattack that Neo makes is blocked and met in kind by Kirito.

Kirito casts Smokescreen, covering a very large portion of the arena in smoke, and the large expansion of the plumes makes Neo stagger and slow down. Damn, he can’t see through the smoke, but he can see the code of the world, and he sees… Neo turns around but he’d been delayed just enough for the Black Swordsman to fly in and slash him repeatedly like he did against General Eugene and lets out a war cry. Neo is feeling the pain of being slashed and is starting to bleed. He uses his telekinesis and outstretches his arms, pushing Kirito far away (that Force Push he did a lot in Resurrections), causing Kirito to come flying out of the giant plume and allowing light to flow in. Neo comes out of the smokescreen and attempts another assault, but Kirito instead does a flip and dodges Neo’s slash (like he did here). Using his momentum, Kirito attempts a slash mid-flip but is intercepted by Neo, now slashing at the upside down boy, but Neo simply punches him the face hard enough to send Kirito cratering into the ground. Kirito grunts, but his regen is already in effect. He quickly picks himself up and flips backward as Neo smashes down, creating an even bigger crater.

5. The terrain shifts yet again, turning into a forest with uneven rocky terrain with the midday sky now becoming a beautiful sunset orange. Neo draws from his bag a pair of MP5Ks and starts firing at Kirito. Undaunted, Kirito simply puts away his weapons and draws from within his coat his lightsaber photon sword and activates it, blocking the bullets with every swing whilst performing acrobatic flips like in Gun Gale Online and simultaneously fires back using his FN Five-Seven semi auto handgun, emptying the magazine. Neo dodges Kirito’s bullets like he dodged bullets in the rooftop scene of the first movie, and we get a camera shot like said scene.

6. Unfortunately, like in that same scene, some of the bullets graze Neo, hurting him in the legs and causing him to lose balance and fall on his back. Kirito rushes in and while Neo moves away by somersaulting backward, Kirito catches up before Neo fully lands and performs this combo (from 0:30 to 0:34), slashing at Neo repeatedly, making the Digital Messiah bleed more, but right as Kirito finished the combo and rushes in again, Neo moves fast and strikes at Kirito’s throat using a chop like he did to Smith. Neo then punches Kirito in the face, and does a side kick to knock back his foe, and then does his signature flying kicks.

Kirito then uses Spriggan Magic again, this time using Metamorphosis and turns into the Gleam Eyes. “Whoa…” The Gleam Eyes Kirito then attempts to skewer Neo with the sharpened claw-like nails. However, it just becomes slower and less agile, so Neo is able to dodge by flying, and punches the beast’s face. Kirito had the beast’s giant maw opened, and seeing Neo get close, chomps down, getting nothing but air, though he got close. Yet, that is all that he got, as Kirito simply flies side to side and continuously punches his face. That is until Kirito uses the Gleam Eyes’ tail to smack Neo, launching far into the forest, uprooting several trees. Kirito then leaps upward, and upon reaching the apex of his jump, pulls back his fist. He then rockets back down to where Neo is, his massive punch ready. However, Neo sees this, and blasts off toward his new animalistic adversary. When they meet, they punch each other, warping the fabric of their digital world so much that it turns into the night sky of Underworld. They are far above in the sky, so Neo is able to fly easily, but Gleam Eyes falls, but Kirito returns to normal and turns into the Star King.

8. Quickly flying to meet his foe, Star King uses the Blue Rose and freezes Neo, covering the One in a block of ice. The Star King then binds Neo using Release Recollection, wrapping the Digital Messiah in a mass of ethereal bands colored icy aqua. Star King then raises his other hand, his second sword pointed towards the sky, launching a giant violet laser, banishing the clouds and leaving a pitch black night sky. The dark skies then seem to become starlit, but the stars start to travel towards the skyward blade, charging it with immense power. Neo breaks free from the ice and the binds of Release Recollection.

9. SCENARIO 1: Neo wins by using his superior speed and strength, and control over the digital world. Warping the fabric of virtual reality, Neo makes the Star King’s blade bend like it was the spoon from the first movie. “There is no spoon. There is no sword.” As Kirito attempts to slash, and when the sword makes contact with Neo, it doesn’t break, but shatters, leaving Kirito flabbergasted and open for Neo to deliver a powerful, rain-dispersing punch. The power is so much that Kirito’s avatar starts to crack like when Neo jumped into Agent Smith at then end of the first Matrix, light bursting through until Kirito explodes, sending Neo flying away and falling, cratering the ground. Neo picks himself back up and then flies away, searching for a phone booth.

10. SCENARIO 2: Kirito wins by using his reality warping. As Neo attempts to bend and break the sword using his manipulation over the digital world, Kirito’s force of will and own virtual reality warping powers permit his weapon to hold on just a little longer, enough for Kirito to be able to slash off one of Neo’s arms, literally disarming him. Neo’s face contorts to one of pain and anger, but before he could do anything, Kirito then impales Neo and imparts all the information on his blade, overloading Neo and killing him like Neo killed Smith: Neo starts to crack, light coming through until he explodes. The blast sends Kirito flying backward and he eventually plummeting to the ground. After getting up, Kirito accesses the menu and then logs out.

Comparison/Strengths and weaknesses:

Neo:

+ Can fight unarmed

+ Can use manipulation of the Matrix to restrict several of Kirito’s weapons, namely his gun

+ Much stronger due to his fight with Agent Smith causing large dry spaces in the middle of a rainstorm at the end of Revolutions.

+ Final fght with Smith makes him faster

= Similar mobility and agility

Kirito

+ A much greater variety of skills and weapons both in close quarters and from afar

+ Greater healing with a healing factor

+ Swords > fists

POWER: NEO. Powerful as Star King Kirito is, Neo’s fight against Agent Smith created a giant dry space in the middle of a rainstorm. Neo was left tired after this, so this is clearly his limit, but it’s still more powerful than anything any version of Kirito pulled off.

SPEED: NEO. Neo and Kirito can both fly. Kirito may be able to block and deflect bullets from an automatic rifle as seen in Gun Gale Online, but Neo’s fight with Smith at the end of Revolutions has Neo punch at speeds slightly faster than lightning.

WEAPONS: TIE. Neo’s martial arts training allows him to fight both armed and unarmed, and he is capable of disarming his opponents, but he has been shown to be injured by weapons. Kirito has a much larger arsenal, but for the most part, Neo can match it (armed combat, similar firearms and proficiency in them)

ABILITIES: KIRITO. Neo can warp the code of the Matrix, but he hasn’t been shown to do much with his powers aside from flying unlike Agent Smith. Neo’s telekinesis is very notable, being able to push away opponents, stop bullets, and pull weapons to him, but by contrast, Kirito has been shown to virtual warp reality like Neo could, but he also has a healing factor from SAO, his Sacred Arts from Alicization like the freezing via Blue Rose, and his magic from Alfheim which like casting smokescreens via the Spriggan Illusion Magic’s Smokescreen and turning into the demonic Gleam Eyes via Spriggan Magic’s Metamorphosis. Kirito simply hasmore things to throw at Neo.

Honestly, this fight reminds me a lot of Link VS Cloud 2021, and I think that the winner can be determined in similar ways. Is Neo’s power and Matrix control so strong that it eclipses Kirito’s vast arsenal, or does Kiritos’ massive array of weapons and abilities give him the edge ove Neo’s might?

MUSIC /ORIGINAL TRACK:

Sound/Composition:

Honestly, just listen to the “Sword Art Matrix” and “A Real Life”. Both songs are obviously different, with TW’s Sword Art Matrix referencing more of The Matrix with the Chemical Brothers electrical instrumentation which then leads into SAO’s orchestra, and the song switches between the two like a pendulum on a grandfather clock while BY’s A Real Life seems to strike a balance; we listen to the more electronic elements of The Matrix backed by the orchestral elements of SAO, and switches it up every few seconds and then there’s a guitar solo at the ¾ mark. Both, in my opinion, capture the perfect feel of how this fight’s aesthetics and rhythm should be: energetic and complimentary to both character’s series and visuals. Both artists can bring their unique compositions and instrumentations to make the music work very nicely.

The sound should, as previously mentioned, have a balance between the two soundtracks. The Matrix is very 90’s with its focus on trip hop, industrial, and nu & rap metal, which may clash horribly with SAO’s more lush instrumental tracks, but let’s not forget that SAO isn’t immune to rock, which may be the best way to unite their soundtracks. After all, BY did something similar with another commissioned track, “Luminous Hearts” where he was able to blend the styles of Persona 5 and SAO seamlessly. So, take TW’s approach of oscillating between genres, but with BY’s rock flair, and for good measure, reference “Crossing Field”. It’s a beautiful song, and maybe it can serve as the transition between the genres, a crossing between two different fields, so to speak, but I don’t know if that could even work.

The Matrix isn’t immune to choirs and orchestras, either. If you ask me, one of the best pieces from the Matrix Trilogy is the song from Revolutions when Neo and Smith have their final fight. The strings serve as the basis for the choir, and every now and then, there’s a horn. It overall sounds dire and climactic.

If you want to go even further with references, then reference the Thirty Seconds to Mars song “This Is War” or Greek Fire’s “A Real Life” since those are the songs that SWE used as the OPs for SAO Abridged. Both have iconic lines in “It’s a brave new world” and “Can we live a real life and know people outside machines? / between the devil and the digital sea?” Heck, I’m half convinced that Brandon referenced Greek Fire since his song for the Neo VS Kirito MU is “A Real Life”. Maybe these songs could be what unites the two different sound styles.

So, oscillating between orchestra, rock, and 90’s electronica, back to rock, and then to orchestra again. When the climax is approaching, and both fighters are at their strongest, be fully orchestrated.

Name/Title:

BEYOND THE SCREEN

The name makes reference to how even though their journeys and relationships started in the digital worlds, they fought so many threats both in and out of the simulations alongside their partners that their relationships only grew stronger, regardless of where they were. Their relationships went beyond the screen. The original name I had for this hypothetical track was “Simulacra And Simulation”, a book by Jean Baudrillard that argued that modern society has become so saturated by media and advertisement that there is no longer a true, original reality, only a copy or simulation of one. Funnily enough, Baudrillard thought that The Matrix was a bad representation of his work. I thought the name was thematically appropriate because for a long time, the reality for both characters was a fake one created with codes and programming, but their relationships were just as real as the dangers that they were in. I then thought of using “Desert of the Real”, referencing the phrase from Simulacra and Simulation, but I opted for “Beyond The Screen” because I find it to sound more positive.

I made the art back in 2024 a little after making the art for Homeland Smash. The cover art shows Kirito’s two swords but it starts to become glitched, showing the code of the Matrix (you could see it as foreshadowing of the climax of the fight). It fits since the swords only exist in SAO/The Matrix, meaning they don’t really exist. I also had the idea to put Blue Rose and the Kagemitsu G4 (the photon sword from GGO), but I didn’t because I had little space in the square I defined.

FINAL THOUGHTS AND WORDS:

If I’m being honest, when I was first writing this, it was both a hindrance and a massive help. It was a hindrance because I had so many assignments to finish and several tests to study for, but on the other hand it was beneficial since I was able to channel energy away from worrying and stressing out into something I enjoy. I know barely anyone comes across these ideas, but I don’t want to simply let them sit in my brain.

Also, I took way longer than I thought to make this. Maybe it’s not my best work, by I like it all the same.

IDEAS THAT I HAD:

1. Reference “There is no spoon” and have Neo manipulate Kirito’s weapons by bending them or by making them shatter.

2. Matrix bullet time and stopping bullets

3. Kirito’s dual wielding vs Neo’s martial arts

4. Bullet clash like in Deadpool VS Deathstroke but some bullets graze each other and continue towards their targets like in Black Widow VS Widowmaker. Have it in a slow motion shooting scene like the lobby shootout scene from The Matrix 1.

5. Blue Rose freezes Neo and gives Kirito the upper hand, letting him use Crimson Rose

6. Angelic Neo VS Star King

Is she thinking of her crush? Maybe, but that wouldn’t explain why she’s stained in blood. On the opposite end, we see another young lady, walking fancifully.

On her scroll, she sees a message and starts to respond.

Roman: Neo, to the warehouse. Now.

The woman with Neapolitan ice cream-colored hair is about to respond, but then, someone bumps into her.

“Oop, sorry!”

Neo quietly grunts, her face clearly expressing frustration by the carelessness of the blonde. The young lass covered in blood notices that the woman in front of her isn’t speaking.

“Oh, you’re a mute? How do you communicate?”

Neo’s frustration is growing, but she types a response and shows her screen. Like this.

“Oh, that makes sense. What about sign language?” 

Neo grunts and points Hush at Toga. The young girl in front of her could be dangerous, but more than that, she’s annoying. 

“Aw, is that your weapon? Let me show you mine!” The psychotic lass draws a knife.
