Native American Heritage Month: focus on STEM
Winds of Change, published by the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), is the “premier nationally distributed magazine with a single-minded focus on career and educational advancement for American Indians/Alaska Natives/Native Hawaiians/First Nations, with an emphasis on STEM.” Highlighting it seems especially appropriate during November, Native American Heritage Month. Other resources to review this month include:
The Native Science Report, presenting Trends in STEM Research and Teaching at Tribal and Native-Serving Colleges.
Broadening Participation in STEM: Effective Methods, Practices, and Programs (in the science library).
Keynote presentation by Joseph Connolly, a NASA aerospace engineer and Haudenosaunee tribal member, during the Defense Federal Community’s Native American Heritage Month celebration Nov. 29, 2018 at the Defense Supply Center Columbus.
Connolly is a Glenn Research Center engineer. Alison Ricker, Head, Science Library, was honored to be a co-presenter with him during a session at the Special Libraries Association Conference in June (”Making Science Relevant,” sponsored by the Physics-Math-Astronomy Division). The session was presented again, online, on Nov. 18, 2019, during the “Best of SLA” series.
