Lolita and Rock n’ Roll: An interview with Aisya of Strawberry Quartz

Construction worker by day, princess by night, Aisya (he/him) brings a lively and creative presence to the lolita fashion scene. In this interview, we speak with Aisya, who is a lolita, editor of magazine Lapin Labyrinthe and guitarist of Strawberry Quartz. Aisya is well recognized in online spaces for his commentary on lolita as a space for creativity and inclusion, as well as trying to create opportunities for lolitas from all backgrounds to participate in print media and photography. 

Aisya is part of a sub-group of lolitas who explore elegance and glamor, with extravagant dresses, ruffles and statement hair pieces that we might closely associate with designer BABY the STARS SHINE BRIGHT. BABY is strongly influenced by shoujo manga aesthetics, and so collective practitioners co-construct expressions and worlds that encapsulate a princess-like lifestyle. Lapin Labyrinthe is one of the collective outlets to cultivate this kind of girlish aesthetic, and appears as one iteration of many of lolita in all its diversity.

Pit: Lady Palutena, am I seeing things, or does that guy have a dragon?! Palutena: That's Euden, Pit, and the dragon beside him is Midgardsormr! He's the twin brother of Princess Zethia, and seventh in line for the Alberian throne. Pit: A prince and a dragon, fighting side-by-side... You don't see that in fairy tales! Viridi: Those Alberians... The royal family can shapeshift into dragons by making "pacts" with dragons, and borrowing their power. I don't like it one bit! Pit: Seriously?! Palutena: Well, luckily for you, Pit, if Euden uses his Dragon Pact too early, instead of summoning Midgardsormr, he'll just throw a bunch of crystals everywhere. Try to fluster him, and you won't get blown around.

Pit: Um, Lady Palutena? Did... I just see a ghost? Viridi: This power... The amount of heat energy, contained in that armlet... Palutena: That's the princess and sole survivor of the kingdom of Millinear, Aisya. Well, she's technically queen, but her coronation was interrupted by a Salamander burning her entire kingdom and everyone in it to ash. Viridi: HA! ...Wait, that's actually horrifying. No animals were left?! Pit: THAT'S what's horrifying to you?! Palutena: Well, it's a good thing you pointed out that armlet, Viridi, because the Millinear Armlet has the power to raise the dead! ...In bodies composed entirely of ash, of course. Pit: So, uh. She's- She's summoning, um... Z-Zombies? Viridi: That could be a useful skill... But I doubt I could find any use for it. Palutena: Well, she certainly is. Pit, I know you may be focused on her ability to call forth Bullnequ, but her Aqua Shot and Aqua Slash shouldn't be discounted either! Attacking from a distance should work. Pit: R-Right!

Pit: Lady Palutena! This woman is FLOATING! Why can't I do that? Palutena: Well, mostly because Dr. Coyle is levitating via electromagnetism. Pit: Electro... Huh? Viridi: Trust me, you wouldn't get it. I barely do. Palutena: Dr. Coyle is the leading mind at ARMS Laboratories, and the type to subject herself to her own experiments if it means she becomes the world's foremost ARMS fighter. Pit: And that includes floating with electromagnaga? Viridi: Magnetism, Pit. I hear she has fifty-two doctorates, so she's CLEARLY smarter than you, but she also can't taste food. Eh, you win some, you lose some. Pit: That's a hefty loss! She'll never get to experience the joy of floor pasta... Viridi: Oh, you graduated from ice cream. Palutena: As an ARMS fighter, she'll switch between three ARMS on her right arm: the Brrchuck, the Parabola, and the Lokjaw, although her left arm will always be a Lokjaw. Be careful, and watch out for the Lokjaw's explosions!
