Today, we remember you. In 2010, a warrant was served on the wrong house. A flash bang was thrown through a window, exploding, and setting the blanket Aiyana and her grandmother slept under afire. A SWAT team including Officer Joseph Weekley entered the home. Officer Weekley testified under oath that Aiyana’s grandmother reached for a gun. This was a lie. Scared, disoriented, and ill-trained Officer Weekley fires his weapon, murdering Aiyana as she slept. She was 7 years old.

I am writing this post not only to remember the light that was Aiyana’s very young life but also to alert you of another Black woman taken from this earth in a similar yet disorderly fashion.

Breonna was a 26 year old EMT. In this distressing time of 2020, Breyona was devoted to helping those around her. And she was still murdered. By police. As she slept. Because they carried out a warrant on the wrong house. The edge of this case is: the supposed suspect was already in custody at the time the illegal entry took place. Her boyfriend Kenneth Walker is facing attempted murder charges for protecting his home from who he assumed to be intruders.

Aiyana Mo'Nay Stanley-Jones. Aiyana jones was born July 20, 2002 and was a seven-year-old when she was shot and killed during a raid conducted by the Detroit Police Department's Special Response Team on May 16, 2010. Jones was sleeping when bullets penetrated her home, striking her. After the shot was fired, Weekley reported to his sergeant that a woman inside had grabbed for his gun. Police arrested Mertilla Jones, administered tests for drugs and gunpowder, and released her Sunday morning Mertilla said that she reached for Aiyana but had no contact with officers. At Weekley's retrial in 2014, it was disclosed that Mertilla's fingerprints were not found on Weekley's gun Officer Joseph Weekley was charged in connection with Jones' death. In October 2011, Weekley was charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment with a gun. Weekley's first trial ended in a mistrial in June 2013. Weekley's retrial began in September 2014. On October 3, the judge dismissed the involuntary manslaughter charge against Weekley, leaving him on trial for only one charge: recklessly discharging a firearm. On October 10, the second trial ended in another mistrial. On January 28, 2015, a prosecutor cleared Weekley of the last remaining charge against him, ensuring there would not be a third trial.
