#rekiaboyd was hanging out with her friends outside in Chicago in March 2012. Three weeks after #trayvon was killed. She was an innocent bystander and the officer who was driving by, was in plainclothes and off-duty. He requested they keep the noise down. Rekia's boyfriend approached the car taking out his cellphone which was mistaken for a gun, and the officer fired 5 times from his car shooting the young man in the hand but Rekia was hit in the head and died the next day. The officer still lives across the street from the murder site. In 2015, after the verdict the #sayhername campaign* was launched to begin to focus on girls and women killed by police. Although the officer was aquitted for involuntary manslaughter, reckless discharge of a firearm, and reckless conduct, he retired right before would have gotten fired in May 2016. In November 2019, he put in a bid to expunge his record and testified that he had been diagnosed with PTSD, depression, and anxiety. (I BET A LOT OF THESE TRIGGER HAPPY COPS HAVE THIS AND IT GOES UNCHECKED!!)🤬 Character witnesses spoke and his numerous awards from 25 years of service were mentioned, but his record was not expunged which didnt't mean he couldn't work in law enforcement again -- but this may change in light of recent events post #georgefloyd It is also interesting to note that the officer approached the Rekia's older brother Martinez and they had a half hour conversation before the hearing. They discussed forgiveness and how the incident had impacted he and his family. Martinez stated, "Everybody's looking for closure, everybody..I wanted to hear him out, what he had to say. He wanted to hear what I had to say..I'm going to build something positive." I didn't know her but her story saddens me. She was to young and the police need to be brought to justice. They are supposed to perfect and serve everyoneequallyin this country. Rekia Boyd. On March 12th, 2012 Servin, an off-duty police officer, drove his car to Douglas Park on the West Side of Chicago after calling the police to make a noise complaint. He then approached a group of four individuals who had been partying in the park. After an altercation, Servin fired into the crowd, shooting Boyd in the head. Servin claimed he fired because someone in the group was holding a gun, but it was actually only a cellphone. Witnesses also said that Servin appeared drunk at the time of the incident. In November 2013, Servin was charged with "involuntary" manslaughter, but was cleared of all charges on April 20, 2015, by Judge Dennis J. Porter in a rare directed verdict. Servin kept his job for four years after the incident. He just resigned May 2016 after hearing word he could be fired. 😑 The city paid $4.5 million to Boyd's family. She was 22 years old.
