Get the Astro-Shark Repellent! Starting in the 1940s, American sailors on naval vessels were given access to a chemical-based shark repellent, which worked by mimicking the scent of a dead shark in the water. In the early 1960s, guidance for US Spacecraft splashdowns weren’t particularly precise, and on occasion there were even technical difficulties that forced early landings such as the Gemini 8 mission which began spinning rapidly due to a malfunctioning thruster.
