ive been on tumblr for a few months now, but there arent many alanon/alateen blogs that are active anymore... i personally thank that if your comfortable with it, you should share your story. i will be sharing my story on here. i need more people who are in a 12 step program to talk to, so if you dont want to share it publicly, you can always dm me. i will also share peoples story's anonymously if they want

book review: Adult Children of Alcoholics

Now, I am not book critic, but one of my goals for 2020 was to read more, specifically read more about topics that will help me understand myself and/or my growth. Let’s get into it!:

Honestly, I cannot remember who first mentioned this book to me, but that it was mentioned numerous times. Having been to AA meetings with my mom as a kid, I assumed this was a book for kids to better understand the AA program and therefore was turned off from the whole idea. Oh, was I wrong. This book is me. I remember actually starting it this past summer and I got to page two, put the book down, and cried. It was so surreal to know that I wasn’t alone, if that make sense. Obviously, I know there are many kids who had differing degrees of my experience, but to be validated for my stunted growth, my sense of insecurity and anxiety-- y'all that was so powerful. A little too powerful, that I put this book down until setting this goal of reading monthly. 

The book outlines 14 habits/ behaviors in which every, single child of an alcoholic experiences. Part one focuses on the past, two focuses on more of a now-practice, and as you guessed it part three talks about the future, specifically how it might affect your relationships both romantic and with having your own children.

The book is a bit outdated with the examples, but this book will forever be timeless. Though its sad to think there will be more children who face a chaotic alcoholic home, it feels very reassuring that there is almost a “start here” type of guide for those who seek healing, who seek understanding.

If you seek more information on connecting with others who are healing and a community around being a child of an alcoholic, please seek either Al-Anon locally, or for teens there is a sub community known as Alateen. With a focus like AA, these groups meet to talk in person, to support each other, and talk about steps to healing and forgiveness.

If you are aged 13-18, have a family member of close friend who suffers from addiction, and can’t get to Alateen meetings, they have virtual meetings now!  Just go to chat.alateen.net to register and you can go to meetings online.  Even if you do already go to meetings, this can still be a good extra resource.  So, if this applies to you, please register!  If not, please reblog/spread the word.  Thanks!

As a kid I totally thought my parents being alcoholics was an anomaly and it was this secret to be kept, but the more I've talked about it the more I realize it's pretty common and too many people think it needs to be kept a secret.
