A brief note on the anti-theatrical: It’s at least as old as Plato, this hatred of theatre. It will always be with us. And the anti-theatrical camp can be divided into two basic sub-camps: a) Those who despise the fluidity of identity and the anarchic tendencies of the human mind and will do whatever they can to nullify human existence. b) Those who are not actually anti-theatrical but think they are because the dominant theatrical culture (insubstantial though it may be within the larger picture) is mediocre. We should prove to the latter the radical potential of our art form, while learning what we can from them. We should reject the former.
