Orange is the New Black: Season 3

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS. If you have not watched Season 3 of Orange is the New Black do not read past this point. You have been warned.

Although it took me a lot longer than probably everyone, I finally finished season 3 of Orange is the New Black. This was partially because I wanted to finish 3rd Rock from the Sun first and also because I wasn't a big fan of last season. That being said I went into this season with very low expectations and the show exceeded them.

I hate Piper. I think that's part of my problem with the show as a whole because I hate the main character so much it makes it difficult to watch sometimes. I hate her and Alex together. They drive me insane. Their whole relationship is basically to continually fuck each other over, be pissed at each other, make out, date, break up, repeat. I think basically anyone involved with Piper immediately becomes annoying because Alex isn't nearly as bad by herself. 

I love Bennett so obviously it was a good idea for him to peace out on Daya and not come back for the rest of the season. Daya had her baby and kept it because her mother lied to Porn Stache's Mom about the baby dying. She ends up going with the Mom's boyfriend who then gets arrested by the DEA so who knows what's going to happen with the baby. She'll probably be taken by child protective services. Oy. 

Then there is the drama between Sophia and Gloria which starts when Gloria's son starts hanging out with Sophia's son. Sophia thinks he's becoming a bad influence. This ultimately ends in an altercation at the end of one episode where Sophia hits Gloria and she ends up with a black eye. This was probably the best episode of the season. This scene was intercut with Alex and Lolly's confrontation as well as Morello's boyfriend beating up Christopher, the guy she used to stalk. I definitely think this was the most interesting episode of the whole season in terms of story. After this Daya's mother starts spreading rumors around the jail that Sophia is still a man which leads to her becoming the victim of hate crimes which the powers that be warrant a reason to put her in the SHU. 

I liked the dynamic between Red and Healy this season. I think it's a great example of wanting something even though it can't work. The acting from both of them is so on point and I definitely enjoyed watching their scenes together. 

I thought it was funny that they had a jail wedding for Morello and the Italian guy. Sort of a lighthearted moment in all the chaos of jail. 

I felt really bad for Tiffany when we saw her backstory. Really heartbreaking. Both rape scenes were very hard to watch. The only good thing that came out of this storyline were her scenes with Boo which I loved! Their friendship is very genuine and simple and just a ton of fun to watch. I hope this will be something that will continue next year. 

Caputo is in an interesting predicament when the season ends. He's now the Head of Human Activity, whatever that means, and all of the CO's abandoned him now that he’s joined forces with “the man”. I enjoyed seeing his backstory this season. It totally made sense for his character and I felt like I could empathize with him even more. I like his character overall so I hope he doesn't end up being the bad guy next season.

Piper decides she loves the Australian inmate and begins to make out with her every episode because that's apparently the only thing Piper knows how to do. She has her illegal underwear business, discovers the Australian girl stole money from the business and sneakily gets her kicked out for contraband in her dorm. Not sure how anyone is still dumb enough to associate themselves with Piper but I guess she didn't know any better. Tough luck.  

Alex is left alone in the green house cleaning up when the man she has been waiting for all season shows up. He's been hired as a guard in lieu of all of the CO's leaving. It sorta seems like Alex is dead meat but that seems to obvious. Instead, I'm sure he'll just torture her all of next season. 

I liked getting to see the lighthearted fun side of all of these women when they escaped the prison and went swimming in the lake. They all got to let go and have fun even if it was just for one day and that's something we don't see very often on this show.

Overall I thought the season was a bit slow paced but much better than last season. I hope that next season will be even better. Some questions I have for the episodes to come: What will happen to Daya's baby? Will Bennett come back? What will happen with Caputo and the CO's? Will Piper get caught and stay in jail forever? (Please!)  Will that guy kill Alex? Should be interesting! What are your thoughts on this past season?

How the fuck can you not care about Pipers storyline? The fuck, the actual fuck. Do you no care about Piper and Alex??? DO YOU NOT FUCKING CARE ABOUT ALEX VAUS AND PIPER CHAPMAN FUCKING?? FUCK Y'ALL.
