I'm rewatching Ugly Betty and realising that this show wouldn't pass today... we're supposed to root for the mediocre, sexist white guy who got his very important job through nepotism and not the black woman who worked her way up and didn't get the job she's qualified for because her boss wants his fuckboy of a son to get a little corporate experience? Damn

I've been watching Ugly Betty and the way they treat Alexis (a trans woman who's transition was written as an evil plot) makes me so sad

Everyone keeps misgendering and deadnaming her and whenever someone is introduced as a potential love interest it's just a trick. I had so much hope for the Brazilian guy and her. No wonder she wants to kill her dad, she's just returning his energy. I just like how at least Betty and Claire respect her as a woman but I want to punch Daniel in the face like wtf stop saying that about her.

It's actually pissing me off because I'm supposed to sympathize with the others and laugh along when they do transphobic stuff even tho they could've written this better but no they decided to stick with the transphobia even tho there are gay characters too and they are treated way more sympathetically and respectfully than they treat Alexis. I hope she gets an actual love interest, she deserves it so much. Also friends who don't leak her transition photos to the press

I mean, the transgender rep in Ugly Betty is obviously flawed for casting a cisgender actress as a transgender woman, but for the time it was written, I'm honestly shocked it's as nuanced and well-written as it is. And the fact that going into this show I had no idea that this was even going to be a plotline for a main character is insane. The show came out in 2006 and yeah it's the big twist of the first season, but the fact that I was never spoiled for this is crazy especially considering how much time I spend on the designated queer people talk about TV shows website.

The fact of the matter is I really like Alexis Meade, I think her storyline while clumsily handled sometimes is actually really well done and if only it hadn't been 2006 and casting a transgender actress was a beyond unheard of thing I really think Alexis Meade could have been an icon. It's really too bad I've never heard of her before, she really is a revolutionary character being one of the first transgender main characters on a mainstream TV show in the early 2000s and she was nuanced and well-written, she wasn't a villain or a stereotype she was a real person whom I'm sure her inclusion in this show was a lot of people's first introduction to trans people. Ugly Betty actually took the time to explore why Alexis would do the melocramatic soap opera thing of faking her death only to return with a sex change, they treated her story with respect and explored her motivations as if she was a real person rather than using her as a punchline or shock value and I truly was not expecting that.

They didn't have to do that, but they did, this show really took their core theme of "every woman is beautiful in her own way" and said Yes, even trans women and I for one think that's beautiful
