if you've had the experience of being a younger woman working in an office setting, you've probably had the unfortunate yet somehow universal experience of an older woman being a little mean to you. but you know who would NEVER do that? my girl Connie.

she adores all the younger women in the office. she always tells them "you'll tell me if anyone is bothering you, okay?" and means it. if one of them is having a hard day, they know they can go into Connie's office for a bit and she'll lower the blinds for them so they can have privacy. she's always trusted to have the hard conversations, like telling one of them they're not following dress code or need to be more formal in their emails, because she always makes sure they're not embarrassed.

one time she notices all of them have cute little plushies and bag charms on their work bags and is immediately obsessed. she says she's too old for things like that and is met with a chorus of "Connie NOOOOOO" and then they all buy her different little bag charms for her purse. she's been getting the same combo of Bubble Bath and Funny Bunny on her nails for 15 years but loves seeing the nail art and fun colors the other girls get. at one point some of them start having a weekly book club and they all get Connie into romantasy smut. If saying "I am a woman now because I have a vagina / I am a man now because I have a penis" will keep you safe and prevent violence on an interpersonal level then you should say it, but you cannot base your political goals off that appeal forever, your aim should be that you shouldn't have to prove your gender to people ready to violate you in the first place by being forced to give them information about your genitalia.

This can only be accomplished by destroying the structural forces which marginalized you and caused them to dehumanize you in the first place, forcing you to give them private information. This requires the abolition of legal sex, which is justified through the social fiction of "Biological Sex", just like how all systems of oppression have social fictions to justify them. You had to struggle to get in through appeals to rules made to exclude you in the first place, an appeal those who don't have easier access to surgery can't make (majority of trans people on Earth!) an appeal which can still fail through other so-called "biological" factors, also structured that way to exclude and oppress you. After your personal safety your true political aim must be that you shouldn't be put in this situation in the first place. You must become a communist.

Fascinating how what's considered feminine and what's considered masculine can change over time. The rebranding of being a horse girl into being a stereotypical feminine girly trait needs to be studied.

Look at classic children's novels. As recently as the 50s and early 60s, being obsessed with horses as a girl was depicted as strange and tomboyish, and the very concept of being obsessed with horses from early childhood and loving toy horses and desperately wanting your own horse being a "little girl thing" and not a "little boy thing" would send someone from the 1800s and earlier into a coma.

There's maybe a point to be made here somewhere about how when keeping and riding horses stopped being necessary to the functioning of society and became a more "frivolous" thing, it was rapidly rebranded as silly and girly and for women, but what do I know.

i wrote a paper in my masculinity studies class in college about this exact phenomenon, specifically about how high heeled shoes started as a practical way for Persian cavalry to keep their feet on their stirrups, then likely due to that association, became a popular fashion item and status symbol among the upper classes of Europe, before the Great Male Renunciation of the 18th-19th centuries, when men started shunning opulence in favor of utility, leaving them as a fashion item for women instead.

I've joked that the two genders are Aesthetic and Utility before but thats just kinda the case

i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.

There's really this strong temptation that everyone has which basically says "to have interiority is to be like me; ordinary people are surface everywhere." And this manifests in different ways in different spaces, and becomes really pronounced when you cluster together with similar people. So tumblr users often act like straight people don't have any interiority because it helps you feel the deepening of social bonds with other gay people. This happens professionally too. I think it was Summer or Sharks who was saying that programming people think that intelligence is just being really good at writing code. Not surprising but very strange to me! I am (equally ridiculously) used to thinking that intelligence is being really good at philosophy, having command of a lot of sources that you can use creatively, etc. This reflects a kind of dynamic on tumblr and reddit. On reddit to have interiority is to be a science guy and on tumblr to have interiority is to be a humanities girl (and the dynamic is gendered in exactly this way). And I think there is something dangerous about habitually regarding other people as automatons. It's good to have people outside of your niche to remind you that other people from different walks of life are quite deep and complicated. They are full of love and fine grained attention to things you never thought to care about. And I think a lot of people go through life thinking of themselves as perpetually victimized by basically empty people rather than having genuine confrontations with full, genuine people who are committed to subtle, complex and real values, who have detailed and intricate histories, and who have a bond to you that you might never quite fully understand. But we rarely even try at understanding these things. We just decide that they're stupid and ridiculous and unreasonable.

the whole 'nobody would miss me if i were gone' line of reasoning is so completely and mindblowingly false, it's almost laughable if you take a couple steps back. there's a lady at work who has been there for maybe two or three weeks and has only talked to me a handful of times, ask where the necklace i usually wear went. another person asked where i was cause i wasn't scheduled for about a week. i regularly think of friends who have deactivated their accounts or who i've lost contact with and what id tell them. i still think about people i haven't talked to for years even though i didn't know them well. people still think about you even if you're a passing specter on the street. and that's not even holding a candle to how much the people who are personally involved in your life care. people do notice and care. all the time. it might be hard to see it or remember it but people do care. ily.
