A group of neotecton hunters found a lone Procaecoform and drove it to a small forest bordering the plains using spears, there, female Alsophylax wait on the trees for the perfect moment to ambush.

been fiddling with the designs of our sci-fi setting on and off for a bit, and i think we finally got something, at least for the xirsians-

We're trying to tackle nailing down our alien designs one piece at a time instead of trying to overhaul the whole design in one go so we're less likely to fiddle with specific details forever and ever...

design process[??? probably not the term I'm looking for] under the cut

i think the biggest step in the right direction with these guys was making their eyes look less traditionally "friendly" since one of the xirsians' main things was always that their faces looked "expressionless and staring" to the other sophonts and they way we drew their features [especially their eyes] did NOT reflect that for the longest time-

Wow, I haven't posted about these guys in a while, Have I?

Anyways here's an Mspaint Xolian, I'm toying around w/ their design a bit to make them read less as generic anthro dragon aliens and more as their own seperate thing. They look a bit similar to a lot of other species i've seen but I honestly think that's because I just haven't really drawn out their body yet.

It fucks me up that these guys are my first ever spore species... They're practically unrecognizable compared to when I first made them.

Yah wanna know smth oddly specific i wanna see more of in sci fi with alien cultures? Monotheistic religions. From what i can gather most alien societies in fiction tend to have multiple gods/deific figures which yk is fine but like i personally have rarely seen aliens that have one god and i think it’d be neat for humans and aliens to have having a monotheistic religion be the dominant one in common. As well as just an exploration of what a one god religion would be like for an alien species and how it would effect them in various ways :3

Also if anyone is aware of alien societies that have a singular god/deific figure do inform me bc id lobe to look into that sorta thing

A female neotect gets a taper fade i mean becomes a high ranking, breeding female in a ceremony where her top crest is trimmed/cut in half as a sign of power. During the ceremony she wears a cape.

In the wall of the room we can see the portrait of a breeding female with flames around her head as a sign of power, you can see the trimmed upper crest in the picture. There are also two lower ranking tects reverencing her.

After doing some kind of heretical act a female neotect is banned from her clan, as an act of identifying criminals and heretics this clan (and probably other clans in the region) cut the antennae and make marks in the forehead and on the side crests. As she runs away, cuts bleeding over her face and in fury against her clan, the "lawdoers" of the clan and the three matriarchs watch her. This act was done during the day as a signal of uncommon occurrence and to make her uneasy, for neotects are not used to wander during the day.

Some weeks later the banned neotect is suffering from severe stress and depression evidenced by her eyes being surrounded by dark circles and her vomiting (it is not shown but part of her fur and crests are falling off too).

Specposium's Spectember day 30: Your favourite spec critter!

I like many spec projects but one that i like the most is @iguanodont Birgworld here on Tumblr. The birgs are simply so charismatic and nice to draw so i used this as an exercise with gouache, i like it, in the middle of the process i hated it but it came out nicely after the lineart. Not sure about birg's color variety tho.

This was a nice spectember challenge and it was a good exercise at spec and art, looking forward for the next one. Back to the normal posts now.
