Living in Colour - Frightened Rabbit
pierced a hole and watched the colour rush forth
“Blue,” Charity says suddenly, the pen in her hand slipping from her fingers.
Chas frowns and watches the pen bounce across the matted floor. "You what?"
Charity nods towards the table off to the side of the bar, the top littered with empty drinks. Rhona says something, and Chas watches the way Vanessa laughs, one hand pressed to her chest and the other curled around a sweating glass.
"Blue," she repeats. "Her eyes, yeah? Vanessa's, I mean. They're... I think it's, blue, innit?"
The pint in Chas's hand falls to the floor, ale flooding around the heel of Charity's shoe. "Oi, whad'ya do that for?"
Chas points a finger, her nail nearly scraping the end of Charity's nose. "Colour," she breathes. "You can see-"
Charity grabs Chas's hand and yanks her forward, their bodies colliding. "Don't," she hisses, "say a word."
"But you can see-" Chas grimaces and pinches her mouth together tightly until Charity loosens the grip on her fingers. "Right. Not a word. I swear it." She pauses. "They're not just blue, though. Now that you can-" She lowers her voice. "Now that you can see colour, you'll know. They're not just blue."
"No," Charity breathes, pen snapping under her feet as she leans forward on her elbows, watching the table. "I don't know what, yet. But... not just blue," she repeats.
