Fun Facts I learned at the Pirate Museum:
Pirates actually DID keep parrots as pets, along with many other exotic birds since most pirates came from the Bahamas or surrounding areas
Pirates were lots of different races and came from a bunch of different backgrounds
Lots of pirates became pirates because pirates treated their men better than the Navy
Pirates did actually wear eyepatches a lot, and had wooden legs, among other things, because they lost limbs fairly frequently in fights
While it’s possible pirates also wore eyepatches because of the change in light from above to below deck, they more likely than not wore them because they were actually missing an eye
Pirates were known for excessive torture techniques, but they usually only performed them on the captains of ships they attacked or the higher up men in command
Crew of the ships attacked were almost always offered positions aboard the pirate ship, and they usually agreed to join
Pirates had to attack ships very often because they spent all their money on alcohol and other pleasures and were usually broke
Punishment on pirate ships was actually not as bad as punishment on Navy or merchant ships
All pirates DID have a code they followed
If someone broke one of the pirate codes they would be abandoned on an island to fend for themselves
While it wasn’t common for women to be pirates, it wasn’t necessarily discouraged either, and there were no real rules about whether women could join the crew or not
Women might not have been part of the crew exactly, but pirates were known to have their wives or women with them on the ships, particularly the captains
Many women pirates allegedly survived even after being caught because they said they were pregnant and you couldn’t hang a pregnant woman
Pirates did not follow treasure maps to buried treasure, but mainly attacked ships to steal goods and supplies
Pirates did not bury their treasure as they spent it too fast and were not in the practice of saving it
Pirates, if caught, were often hanged, tarred, and hung out in various areas to warn pirates of the dangers, but also people of the dangers of turning into pirates
Stealing from your own crew was considered the worst crime a pirate could commit
Medical practices on pirate ships were bad to nonexistent with butchers being put in charge of most surgeries
The life of a pirate was a short but merry one
Expect a Fractal update today :D
