His name is Altin Lowenhar and he is an Oath of the Ancients Paladin. He once vowed to protect the light in this world, and was a knight in the Amberdale city guard, of which he became leader after his father's retirement. Sometime after he took command, Amberdale faced a string of monster attacks. He set out to root out the cause, and discovered a vampire lord was directing hordes of undead to lay siege to the city. He went to confront this vampire lord, but was bested, captured, and turned.
Only after he'd been missing for several days did his father go looking for him. His father ended up being the one to slay the vampire lord, freeing Altin from being a spawn and allowing him to turn into a true vampire. Unfortunately, the vampire lord was not a kind master and had been starving him. So Altin, crazed by hunger, attacked and killed his father as soon as he was free. When he came to, he was overcome by guilt, but obviously could not let the public find out what he had become. And so began a grand conspiracy, in which Altin "retired" due to "injury" (the cane is his sword enchanted to look like a cane; he does not need a cane) and became a recluse, rarely appearing in public (and of course, never during the day). He has charmed most of his staff to not mind his being a vampire and has converted most of his father's estate into a hospital, in part because he still wants to "preserve the light", but also so that he has a constant supply of free blood. He still commands the city guard, albeit as a noncombatant. Additionally, he still conducts his paladin duties on occasion, but always in secret, mostly using his vampiric abilities to turn those who are on death's door and allowing them to stay on the estate, under his protection as vampire spawn.
