I'm also going to validate your anger cause... it's true. School Reunion is excessively and UNNECESSARILY hurtful and spiteful in its dialogue at times. Sarah Jane being suprised at Rose's age and saying "you pick them younger every time!" HOLY FUCK and referring to her as 'assistant' etc. Sarah Jane did you think of yourself that way too? It makes me want to drown the writer in acid because it makes it seem as though companions are pets or playthings of the Doctor that he discards when he gets bored and THEY ARE NOT??? GOD IF THIS DW SHOWS YOU ANYTHING IS HOW DEEPLY AND EQUALLY DOCTOR AND COMPANIONS APPRECIATE EACH OTHER! And don't get me started on them arguing, it's pointless conflict and out of character for both women. They wouldn't be a threat for each other and they'd know that! I'm sick of men writing women like catty competitive bitches! Even at the end, when Sarah Jane sees the new K9, she says "he replaced you with a new model. Yeah, he does that," and I'm like DUDE THIS IS DISTURBING COMPANIONS ARE NOT TROPHY WIVES WHAT THE HELL

yeah, all of this is completely spot on. mickey’s joke about “the missus and the ex” being every man’s worst nightmare really shines a light on what they thought they were doing with this episode, and it does not impress me. it removes the focus from the doctor’s genuine pain over losing people and making bad choices, and instead makes it about his (fragile) masculinity.

maybe i’m just bitter, but that framing of rose and sarah jane makes his whole “curse of the time lords” diatribe a lot less sympathetic. it makes it sound as if the doctor, like, dropped sarah jane off in aberdeen, not because he had to (like he told her), but because he’s all worked up about “decay” and thought he spied a wrinkle or something. rose is nineteen (twenty? doesn’t matter) fucking years old, she does not need to hear that all that’s waiting for her is age and decay and death!!!! man, shut up, WHAT ARE YOU SAYING.

the worst part is that... the dialogue between sarah jane and rose isn’t even witty or clever, really. it’s not a battle of wills so much as a ceaseless bitch-fest, in which both of their tones are exactly the same. it indicates how little the writer thought of both characters, except in their function as “women who love the doctor.”

the only redeeming value exists in their performances, in how much david clearly loved working with elisabeth, and in how lively and loveable billie is in basically everything she does.

ANYWAY, I’M CRANKY!!!!!!!!!!! i had to stop watching the episode for a little and go make some bread just to cleanse my spirit.

My heart yearns for more Tendonna content and I was wondering if the new book Legends of Camelot is worth it :')

in terms of plot/setting it's v fantasy/fairytale w a sci-fi explanation so i think it's rlly up to each person's taste in that regard but !

the characterization is so so good & it has some rlly Top Tier tendonna moments- u rlly get the sense that the author loves these characters & their dynamic as much as the rest of us do :) i won't spoil anything but there's this moment where ten is rlly rlly appreciating donna on main & it made me scream (positive) so.. imo it's definitely worth it !

This may be weird, but sometimes it saddens me to think that if dw hadn't been a family-friendly show the writers might've made the Doctor's behavior more overtly sexual (and I already dislike some sexual innuendos done during the Moffat era). To me, one of the greatest things about the Doctor is how much they value platonic relationships and their complete lack of interest in sexual relationships, so it'd be a real letdown for me if these things were just 'plot or age restrictions' :/

Yeah mood. I was really worried abt that with modern who that like... now that there isnt so much of a limit on like sexual or romantic content that they would just toss out the doctors asexuality and aromanticism. and theyve definitely tried with romance and yeah moffat with sex. like why is it such a bad thing to them to have a character where romance and sex arent a big priority??? I also feared this happened with 13 bc i worried a woman playing the doctor would be more likely to be sexualized. just like... the doctors relationships with their companions are so deep and rich but still fundamentally platonic and thats WONDERFUL AND GOOD and i feel like deciding it needs to be romantic or sexual to be that deep or important kind of cheapens it. 

so far its been okay but still i Worry. I definitely fear and dread the possibility of ever having the doctors asexuality, which has been so goddamn important to me, stripped away by careless allocishet writers. I hope it never happens, and I hope that things progress enough that we will at some point get an onscreen confirmation that the doctor is aspec (theres proof in the extended universe and interviews from some of the doctors but like not everyone considers those canon) but either way the doctor will always be asexual (and aromantic) in my eyes.

Hey there! I think this fic was only posted on tumblr, so I’m afraid it was lost when the blog was deleted. I haven’t been able to find it anywhere else, and while I did manage to find my five year old reblog of the fic the text was under a read more, so I still couldn’t access it. I’m posting this publicly in case anyone else has an idea or knows where to find it?

What do you think of Barry and the others? I see where Dennis or Hedwig come from, but what about the rest? Btw completely in love with Barry and Dennis ^^

omg Barry. I adore Barry. I want to have a cup of coffee with Barry and tell him about my worries. I feel like we all like Barry because he is so warm and inviting.  I think barry serves a very important purpose and this is stated multiple time throughout the movie. 

So, we know from Hedwig that Barry used to be the one that dictated who got the light, when, and for how long. This makes a lot of sense to me. Dennis is the protector in the most physical sense but I feel like Barry protects the alters like a mother hen. We see little piece of this when the real barry comes out at the end when all the alters come out at once. He grabs her face and tells her everything is going to be alright.  He functions the best when Kevin cannot. 

I believe he is the caretaker.

 Determining everyone’s time in the light shows that he is well acquainted with the other alters and understands their strengths and personal needs. He is the one who is maintaining their job and their appointments with Dr. Fletcher. Of course, Dennis is the one pretending to be Barry but when we see the video diaries we can see he was pretty accurate to his real personality. During Dennis’ imitation, he mentions that “Patrica and Dennis are very unstable.” So, I can assume it was his decision to ban them from the light- probably makes decisions like this for the group and that shows they probably trust him. Barry overall is very capable and social. He takes care of the other alters and by doing that he is indirectly keeping Kevin safe. I believe he is all the best parts of Kevin put together. Warm, giving, lively, and passionate (kind of makes me sad tbh).

Jade is really funny. I liked her a lot. We only see her twice but she has a strong presence. “Then why am I the only ones who has to take these you mother fuckers?!” LOL. Also, “ignore him… he is very unstable.” There is a sass to her- some bite. I feel like moments when Kevin has needed to speak out is when Jade takes over. She feels like this young woman who is very confident (princess is what comes to mind). If she is feeling something she is probably going to tell you. She isn't afraid of being vulgar or being heard- something that Kevin needs. 

So the other alters I am not entirely sure about. I’ll probably post something later on once I’ve thought about it more, but thanks so much for asking!! I love thinking and discussing it.

oh, easily. the outfits! the body language and significant looks! the werewolf!! the foreshadowing!!! it's just so good.

the only thing that could've made it better...

is if they'd kept the "sir doctor" "dame rose" cut scene in!!! we deserved to see even more flirting!!!

Honestly very grateful that you pointed out the characterization issues with m*ffat's writing in the Empty Child two parter, especially because they seem almost universally loved in the fandom. As it usually happens, the plot is good, but certain comments, excessive innuendos and especially the sexual connotations in those episodes always make me EXTREMELY uncomfortable

no, yeah, it sucks. it truly just sucks. i think a lot of doctorrose shippers like myself scrap what we can from the trash-heap, namely in the form of them dancing... like, literally dancing, not the thin guise of innuendo over a deep bed of hypersexualization... hence me taking a dozen screencaps of that one scene, but there are so many things that people probably don’t even realize started in this episode that are just so embedded in fan content and it’s tiring.

also, i think it’s reasonable and completely justified to be uncomfortable!! especially when the sexual undertones are presented in such a careless, sexist way. it’s the difference between the way we interpret, say, the intimacy presented in tooth and claw and...whatever the hell this episode is.

like, the innuendo is constant and unrelenting, and the way the doctor wields that as a way of being superior to rose... as a way of making digs at jack... like, that’s just so misogynistic and absurd. the way rose throws herself at jack and the doctor, while simultaneously appearing uncomfortable with the situations she’s in? oh my god, it’s just so gross.

also, i’ll say it: the plot’s not even that good. it’s meh. it just gets remembered as better than it is because that’s m*ffat’s whole deal. big, bombastic drama.
