This morning I found myself really struggling. We buried a good friend yesterday whose wife is in the hospital fighting for her life, one of my best friends from high school is being buried today, and I saw the police and fire department in hazmat suits go into a neighbor’s home and take a body away on a stretcher. Work notified a large number of employees they are being furloughed and the numbers of people we know are struggling with food insecurity continue to rise. It seems as if every time the phone rings or I get an email, there is some emergency or tragedy attached with it. But in the midst of all of this, life continues on in all of its hope and glory. People who have been very sick are slowly recovering, the markets are showing life again, babies are being born (friends welcomed twins yesterday), people are finding compassion and empathy in their hearts again and are showing it in support of the workforce who are keeping our society safe and continuing on. I don’t think it is a mistake that this is happening during Easter and Passover. These moments are about recognizing our past and looking to the future with hope and renewal in our hearts. Today I am grateful to find the beauty of renewal. This plant was a Christmas gift that was lost during delivery and arrived brown and dead in early January. Today I am grateful for the miraculous recovery of Mother Nature. These once beautiful pear trees were severely damaged during Hurricane Sandy and then suffered blight. In an effort to save them, the dead part was cut away.
