Unknown Artist, 'Portrait of a Young Royal, with a Dove and a Beehive', oil on canvas, no date (1600s), European, for sale for est. $2,000 - $3,000 USD in Shapiro Auctions 'Important Art' sale, November 2020; Mamaroneck, NY, USA.
The beehive with a bee emerging - in his lap next to the small, yet undesciphered inscription - could be a reference to St. Ambrose. The saint, who was swarmed by bees as an infant, was left unsullied but for a drop of honey on his cheek: taken as an omen his father believed it meant he would have a ‘honeyed’ - an eloquent - tongue.

Happy Earth Day! “The place where the sweet waters fall into the sea,” is the translation of the Native American name Mamaroneck, which is a town situated twenty-three miles north of New York City, at the mouth of a river and at the head of a harbor. Kim Cridler’s “Where the Sweet Waters Fall” (2014) at the MNR Mamaroneck station is inspired by the trees and Romanesque Revival arches seen throughout the area.
