“It was a relief to explain everything to her, to tell her about the prison and about the temple and what I’d thought of the magus in the beginning and what I thought of him in the end. What it meant to be the focus of the gods’ attention, to be their instrument, used to change the shape of the world. And it was nice to brag a little, too.” - The Thief
It’s The Thief - the book’s - 25th birthday, so here’s a drawing that’s basically this thought all over again. We meet Eugenides when he’s among strangers, pretending to be a thief named Gen, and we leave him dressed as the god Eugenides, hearing a very important message.
Young Gen looks carefree in this drawing, but the thing about The Thief is, by the end, we know that he doesn’t get caught by mistake. He undertakes this journey for someone he loves, and - we now know - he saves himself.
(hey. guess what? I love this book and am cheering loudly as it turns 25!)
