Will drive you, will drive you
Mad!
“Women, Amrit, and their hearts,” his father told him once “They will drive you crazy with indecisiveness and their complexity. Let us hope your bride is an exception.”
Amrit Doobay had looked forward since he had a mind of his own to meet his bride. How would she look like, he wondered. Would she have Jyotsyana’s amberina eyes? Would her hair be long, or short like the British fashion? How would her laugh sound like?
Many times, he had asked Mahadeva for a glimpse of her, but it was impossible, for she was far away. Far away from her birthright, her destiny, from him. Her absence was noticeable. It weakened him. It ached. Greatly so.
Roxanne!
You don't have to put on that red light
Walk the streets for money
You don't care if it's wrong or if it is right
Roxanne!
You don't have to wear that dress tonight
Roxanne!
You don't have to sell your body to the night
Rita-Shiva had always been his closest advisor. Together, they had fabricated for years the ultimate test to bring Amala to Calcutta once again and fulfil her destiny by his side.
He tried not to show it, but he asked Mahadeva perhaps too many questions about her, for he was working with her now.
“What is her voice like, I wonder? Loud and commanding? Soft and feminine? Or perhaps low and husky? Does she have an accent?”
Mahadeva sighed “Her voice is like honey, sweet and calming, but with that Basu presence. And yes, she has a heavy British accent, but her Hindi is impeccable.”
“And what about her hands? Are they soft and smooth, or calloused by work?” It mattered not. He had more than enough money to take the callousness away. And to maintain its softness.
“There is a certain callousness, but she takes good care of them.”
“What is she up to, I wonder?” He looked at Rita-Shiva “Let us find out this instant.”
“…As you wish,” He closed his eyes, looking for Amala. Then, he opened them “I feel joy in her. She is trying on a beautiful saree. A green one.”
Amrit cocked an eyebrow “Green? The colour of self-independence… not the Basu purple, but a good one. Mint or emerald?”
“From what I gathered from our shopping trip, she leans towards emerald, yes.”
His eyebrows shoot up “The two of you went shopping?
Something flickered in Ratan’s face, but quickly recovered.
“To get to know her. A mere strategy to make her feel at home in India.”
For the first time in twenty-eight years, he didn’t believe Mahadeva’s words.
His eyes upon your face
His hand upon your hand
His lips caress your skin
It’s more than I can stand!
It was on the wedding of his bookkeeper that his suspicions of Ratan and Amala growing closer than they should were clear. They were laughing, Amala’s hand on his arm, his eyes firmly on her like she was all that mattered, that closeness that no coworkers had. She lifted her hand teasingly, and he kissed it. Amrit clenched his first. It hurt. No, not only that. It burned him. He should be doing that, not the avatar.
It seemed he had to remind everyone who he was… and who Amala belonged to.
Why does my heart cry?
(Roxanne) Feelings I can’t fight
At last, Amala had done another mistake. She tried breaking into his private library again. And now, he had her cornered, his arms trapping her against a bookcase. He smelled her. She smelled of jasmine, fresh herbs, ancient books and him.
“What is your relationship with Ratan?” He demanded.
Amala didn’t like his tone. She squared up against him, despite being smaller than him “Why is that your business? You are not my owner.”
I am. I AM!
“It is very much my business, Miss Khan. Men like Vaish aren’t made for love.”
“Says who?”
He got closer to her “Says the man who’s known him all his life.” Says the man the gods will you to be with. Your husband, chosen by the Gods, destiny and myself.
“What I do and with whom is none of your concern.” She tried to escape, but he pulled himself closer to her, breathing heavily with rage and something that he hadn’t felt before.
Jealousy.
“Gods damn it, Amala, can’t you see?! Are you so blind?! Of how much it burns?”
Confusion washed her face “What burns?”
To see you with him. In his arms instead of mine. That he makes you laugh in my stead.
“Don’t you feel it? Didn’t you feel it when you saw me with Yashvi?”
Realisation came upon her.
“We are…?”
“Yes,”
They were close. So close. A breath away, in fact. Oh, how he longed to kiss her. All he had to do was take it. He looked at her. She was panting heavily, her eyes lidded, looking at his face, his lips.
“Amala…” He took his time spelling her name, letter by letter, as if he were tasting honey for the first time.
She closed her eyes, opening her mouth. It was all it took to kiss her. He kissed her passionately, hungrily, possessively. She moaned, kissing him back with the famous Basu fierceness he had dreamt about. His hand went to her hair, soft and silky, and her leg, toned and soft like a feather. He pulled her so close, they could merge into one.
Mine, mine, mine, he told himself as he kissed her, caressed her, touched her. She is mine. No one will take her from me. He felt himself stronger, his whole body pulsating as he kissed her neck and his hands travelled up her thigh.
“Can you feel it, Amala?” He whispered “How right it feels when we kiss, when we touch… This is the will of the gods, our destiny…”
“For you to kiss me senseless?”
He chuckled against her, his lips now in her collarbone. Gods, how he longed to take her right there. For Ratan to feel it, and to see for himself how she reeked of him.
Of all the things he thought of competing against Mr. Vaish, Amala’s heart was nowhere near his list.
But he would win. What was an avatar against the will of Mahakali?
You’re free to leave me
But just don’t deceive me
And please
Believe me when I say I love you
The news of what happened at Kalphigrami burned him alive. Not only Amala had almost been killed by bhoots, he wasn’t there. But Ratan was. And they shared a moment. He knew. His intuition never failed. The way they looked at each other, that sense of intimacy, of illicitness, something only the two of them knew… He hated it. He hated Mahadeva for trying to steal what was his by right, by destiny!
Clutching the message in his fist, his resolve solidified. Amala ought to learn the truth. At the Kali Duja. And from him.
Y yo que te quiero tanto, ¿que voy a hacer?
Me dejaste, me dejaste en un tango
El alma se me fue, se me fue el corazón
Ya no tengo ganas de vivir porque no te puedo convencer
Que no te vendas, Roxanne
“Are you saying that… we are bound?” Amala asked.
“Yes. From the moment we were born. The gods will us to be together, Amala.” He took a deep breath, looking into her eyes “I am keenly aware of your connection to Mahadeva, but I know your heart also longs to be with me. I do not like competition, Amala. It is Mahadeva or me. Who is the man your heart yearns and cries out for?”
Roxanne (Why does my heart cry?)
