yes, it is rude. no matter how polite you are being when you ask them this.
you say you are almost certain. so you are not absolutely certain.
unless you are absolutely, undoubtedly certain â with actual proof â that their writing is ai generated, never ever ask an artist if their work is ai generated.
I know several writers who would stop writing and delete all of their works if they were ever accused of using ai. so it doesn't matter if you are polite when you ask them this, you are suggesting that their works are ai generated, that they didn't create the works they could have spent hours, days, weeks, months or years working on.
ai and chatgpt are trained on real humans' works, they are trained to mimic the way real humans write. so if you say a genuine writer's work "looks ai", I'm gonna have to ask you what you think ai was trained on.
a writer whose English isn't their first language may also write in a way that "looks ai" to some, if they write in English and have to rely on translator.
using em dash isn't a sign of ai. I do it all the time. my fellow writers all love em dash.
having long paragraphs with "overly described scenes" isn't a sign of ai. I do it all the time, and so do my fellow writers.
all the "ai signs" are actually just what most writers actually do. they get mistaken for "ai signs" because sometimes the way writers write or describe a scene in a fanfic or an original work is different than the way people talk or text. because they're writing a fic and describing a scene, not chatting with a friend. the way I talk is different than the way I write my fics.
if you suspect a work was ai generated, but are not 100% sure, you can always just stop reading said work without saying anything.
if someone does use ai to write, they will either a.) deny and continue using ai to write or b.) admit because they see nothing wrong with it and continue using ai to write.
if a genuine writer was wrongly accused of using ai, they may stop writing altogether.
asking a writer if they use ai or chatgpt to write will always do more harm than good. witch hunting will always do more harm than good.
you are not "fighting against ai" by throwing around such accusations. you are harming genuine writers and artists.
all of the fanfic writers, whom I personally know, say the same thing that they would feel discouraged and might delete all their works if they were asked this.
itâs not âhey do you like x or yâ question. itâs a subtle implication that your work looks like it was written by a robot within a minute. if you personally donât find that offensive, thatâs cool. but I know a lot of writers do. and they have the rights to be discouraged by it.
also we are talking about fanfic writers who write as their hobby, getaway or safe place, writers whose works you read for free. not writers who sell their works and are making profit from what they write. fanfic writers donât owe you anything.
This just came across my dash. I'm going to be blunt.
Asking a writer or artist if they âuse AIâ is an accusation, no matter how you dress it up. Itâs not neutral. It implies you think their effort, style, or voice is artificial. It implies that their human work doesnât look human enough for you.
You donât protect the community by policing people who are actually creating from scratch. You protect it by supporting human creators, reporting confirmed AI misuse when thereâs evidence, and learning the difference between this sounds different than what Iâd write and this is machine-generated.
Writersâespecially fanfic authorsâalready pour their time, emotion, and identity into what they share for free. They donât owe anyone proof of authenticity on top of that. And if your question makes someone want to quit writing, itâs not protecting the community. Itâs shrinking it.
If youâre not 100% sure, just scroll. AI ethics donât need to turn into public inquisition season.
I also saw a video by T. B. Skyen on YouTube where he said that accusing (or """asking""") an artist of using AI is not protecting the art community. It is signifying to the AI bros and corporate bastards that you, the consumer, cannot tell the difference. This enables them to replace more of their art and writing staff with AI, because if you're not going to be able to tell, the fuck does it matter?
So, you might not think it's hurting anybody to level AI allegations against your fellow artists and writers, but the reality is that it very likely could affect another artist or writer's livelihood in the future. Maybe not an amateur fanfic writer, but maybe the writer of your favorite show when the evil corporate powers that be realize that even other artists and writers can't tell what's manmade and what isn't. If you think the work of real artists looks like AI slop, then more AI slop is what you're gonna end up with in the long run.
If you care at all about protecting the arts, then you should be spending more time appreciating and lifting up the work of artists, injecting joy and love and whimsy back into the community, instead of staying hypervigilant and fearful that you might accidentally enjoy work that was made by AI. Instead of asking someone if their work was made by AI, just fucking tell them you liked it. If you spend all your time trying to maintain some moral high ground about being a "true" appreciator of art because you make extra sure it's not made by AI first, you're gonna end up not appreciating very much art at all and pushing away a lot of the artists who would otherwise be overjoyed to have you in their space.
Bugs Bunny accidentally transformed the word nimrod into a synonym for idiot because nobody got a joke where he sarcastically compared Elmer Fudd to the Biblical figure Nimrod, a mighty hunter.
He also solidified the idea of rabbits loving carrots when carrots actually carry very little nutritional value for rabbits. The funniest part of that is that the original joke was a reference to a Clark Gable film where Gable munches on a carrot, it was never meant to imply that rabbits love carrots. The Clark Gable reference wouldâve been obvious to audiences in the 40s but it has been pretty much lost to time.

Mariana slowly got out of bed, her movements followed by the groans of a somnolent Edward, wrapped in the dark bedsheets of his bedroom. His hands reached for her, but as usual, she fled through his fingers like a dream five minutes before waking up. A dream so good he wished he could hold onto and sleep forever with.
"Do you have to leave... ?"
He asked, as she stood in the mirror, bare for his walls to look at. Memorizing every detail of her skin as she brushed through her long, dark brown hair â the shade of it reminded him of a wilted tree in winter, and he couldnât help but wonder if bringing her happiness would make her hair turn a more golden brown, like a tree reborn in spring.
His question was met with a heavy silence, before she opened the closet, reaching for some clothing items she had left in there ; grabbing her underwear.
"Yes. I do. I have that audition..."
Of course an actress like her wouldnât escape the chance â Edward had put the stage days behind him, but she had not given up ; matter of fact, it was as if their separation motivated her to pursue this dream even more. A separation Edward regretted every day â the parting of Romeo and Juliet. He wished his limbs could extend to reach for her, maybe convince her to stay in bed â but he is only one man. And sometimes, one man is not enough.
And no man would ever be enough to contain Mariana Norfolk. That is the vow she had made herself.
"Youâve never changed, huh, Roxanne ?"
He smirked, but did not receive the reaction heâd hoped for â instead of smiling, she stiffened and stared at him. "Iâve told you not to call me that."
Edward was aware that her stage name, Mariana, meant more to her than a simple stage name, but â
"Roxanne is gone." She said, getting dressed. Looking at herself in the mirror as if to confirm her own words, green eyes shining with intent. Hands brushing through her own hair as she adjusted her costumey dress, the dark red sleeves swooshing around her elbows. The role of the witch is going to be hers. And no one will stop her.
"She isnât." He spoke, causing her to turn around. If she could cast a spell to reduce him to silence, or feed him a potion to make him forget their past together, she wouldâve without a single hesitation. Edward had, by now, gotten up, just as bare as she was earlier. Her eyes, of course, drifted down and smirked, though nothing in this situation called for her to make an attempt at humor. Itâs almost as if she did it on purpose â not defusing the situation, but worsening it the best way she knew how.
Maybe if she destroyed enough situations, he wouldnât want to see her again. Maybe, he would fall in her trap ; he would take her at face value, as a dumb, unserious woman who didnât care about anything other than herself. That she was shallow, and selfish, and he would leave and focus on someone else.
"That girl is long gone."
Mariana said, reiterating her point, her voice lacking emotion. She wasnât trying to convince him or herself â she knew Roxanne Montgomery was dead and buried, and all Edwardâs insistence did was  annoy her ; and she angered quick.
"She died when she left the troupe."
"Mariana â" Edward began, but felt his own blood boil. This was why they went together so well ; and was also the source of their downfall. The two of them angered quick â wrath had always been their fatal flaw. Their sin, if you will.
"Why do you so insist in drowning yourself in this image ?"
"Interesting choice of words." She remarked, a cruel grin on her face. "I wonder what little âFelia would think." Going in for the kill. Use it as a weapon before he can, before he can try and hold it against her, over her head like a sword of Damocles.
Cruelty had always been her weaponâ and now, it was her nature. She was cruel. It was who she was.
Her words worked in her favor â provoking Edward, so at least one of them was winning. He stared at her as she smugly put her headband on, smiling in the mirror.
"Who are you, Roxanne ?"
He said, his eyes feeling tears form in them. Yet Mariana didn't turn to look at him. She wasn't Roxanne anymore. Roxanne might have turned and lookedâ apologizedâ hell, Roxanne would never have said that.
But she wasn't Roxanne anymore.
"Try again."
"Roxanneâ"
"And please don't paint yourself like the victim." She interrupted, her gaze moving to look at him, though she looked into his eyes through the mirror. Reducing him to silence, just as she thought.
"When your uncle accused me of provoking Ophelia's suicide, you didn't speak once. You let it happen. You let him have it." Now her tone had shifted, more accusatory.
Roxanne, unlike poor old 'Felia, had not killed herself. She was murderedâ persecuted, driven to isolation and darkness.
And the dead can't come back. Nothing goes right when they do, anyway. It's better if what is dead stays dead.
"Don't pretend like you don't understand me, Romeo. You do. But Juliet has found new partners. Mariana prospers, and Roxanne is gone. That lost little girl you once knew died that night she ran from the troupe."
Silence reigned over the bedroom, as she made her way to the door, before Edward felt something within him igniteâ an urge to make her stay. To not let her leaveâ to ask, to beg, to accuse, to blame, to cry, to laugh. Anything that would forbid her from leaving this room. It was as if closing the door would make her leave for good.
Unfortunately, he and her were cut from the same cloth. His tone replicating her accusations.
"And that new partner is Professor Dudley, huh ?" He bitterly spoke, Mariana turning to look at himâ finally. At least he got part of what he wanted.
"I've seen the way he looks at you. The things his eyes say. You've given to him, haven't you ?"
But Mariana wasn't the woman he knew. She laughed, her green eyes shining with success. As if it had all been a game to her. He couldn't read herâ and maybe, that was all she wanted.
"I need all the help I can get, in a world like this."
One more step.
"Goodbye, Edward."
And the door opened.
And she closed it, before he could do anything. She had slipped through his fingersâ again. Just as she always had, and just as she always would. It was hopeless.
He sat and cried. Over what he had doneâ but moreso, over what he hadn't. Over what had never been, what could have been, what could have been different.
