Happy Indigenous peoples day. As an American I live on stolen land. Land that once belonged to indigenous people. The Maruvians are based off of different groups of Indigenous Americans from South and Central America. So I made an Maruvian edit to honor this day. May the memories of all the indigenous peoples killed by Europe settlers or USA/Canadian governments by honored and never forgotten.

Scepter Speculation

“A Tale of Two Scepters” revealed a lot of information about the Scepters of Light and Night why couldn’t they just keep the name “Scepter of Darkness” it sounds so much better thematically, but when put together with information from earlier episodes, I think it can tell us even more.

So we know the Scepter of Light was created by Amaláy, the last Royal Wizard of Maru, and it was used by her in some major event that also involved the Scepter of Night in the hands of an unknown Maruvian man, as shown in the mural in “The Scepter of Night”. It’s not clear from the mural whether they were fighting or working together (though based on their positions I’d say fighting), but from the energy blast/orb/portal-like object in the center, it involved a lot of magic. Also, the man’s headdress would seem to indicate he was important and he clearly had enough magical power to handle the Scepter of Night.

I speculate that the Scepter of Light was created first, because its entry in the Codex Maru is towards the beginning while the Scepter of Night’s entry is at the very end. And judging by the fact that the Scepters are listed at all given how late in the timeline of Maruvian history they were made, Amaláy might have compiled the Codex herself. 

Speaking of the timeline of Maruvian history, Amaláy’s VA Genesis Rodriguez is only 30, so Amaláy was probably in her early thirties or younger when she died. This gives about a 15-year timespan when both Scepters (and the Codex Maru) were created before the destruction of Maru. After that, the Scepter of Light ended up in the hands of the Avaloran royal family, while the Scepter of Night stayed hidden in one of the pyramids. Since the riddle in the Codex Maru led to the same pyramid where Alacazar found the Scepter of Night, it doesn’t seem to have been disturbed in the centuries after the fall of the Maruvians.

But when Elena met the sunbirds in the latest episode, they explained how the relationship between the Scepters is “a duel that is eternal, a never ending fight/ It's good versus evil, it's day against night”. How would they know all this if the Scepter of Night was only active for a few years before the fall of Maru and hidden away ever since? In fact, how do they know about the Scepters at all, since only Quita Moz seems to have oracle powers? Also consider that the Scepters are virtually unknown in the Spirit World, since Zuzo had to find a spirit guide who was around in Maruvian times to learn about the Scepter of Light.

When Elena first met Quita Moz, he noticed the Scepter right away and commented, “It’s been a long time since I last saw the Scepter, and even longer since I saw someone who could use it”. Assuming he wasn’t underexaggerating when he joked about being 500 years old, that means at least two people have brought the Scepter of Light to Vallestrella in that time, one of whom could wield it properly. But in real life, the Mayan civilization declined around 900 AD, so if a similar timeline applies to the Ever Realm, the Maruvians were gone for far longer than 500 years, considering EOA’s mid-to-late-1800s setting.

Taking all this information together, the Scepter of Light and likely both Scepters have had other wielders since the fall of Maru, and those wielders were destined to fight one another. It happened infrequently enough and on a small enough scale to escape the history books and be forgotten by spirit guides, but the sunbirds noticed the pattern. Maybe their extensive knowledge of how the Scepters work came from Amaláy herself, or maybe from one of the later wielders who visited them in Vallestrella.

I’m still not sure how the Scepter of Night wound up back in its original hiding place, but other than that, I think this idea makes the most sense given what we’ve seen in the show so far. This makes mastering the Scepter of Light extra important for Elena, because she has the power to break the cycle of conflict and destroy the forces of evil behind the Scepter of Night once and for all. Alternately and more interestingly, Elena and her allies could take a third option and figure out how to use the Scepter of Night for good.

Brown Eyes edits, part 3: Amaláy, Mateo, Princess Valentina, Amara, Cristina, and Quique

Last one for now! I think Amaláy’s canon design bugs me the most; she’s pre-Columbian, why on earth would she have blue eyes? Mateo I’m totally fine with, I’m a sucker for gorgeous hazel eyes. As for Valentina, I had two different ideas for her and dark brown eyes need more love, so here she is again.
