During 2010, 15 year old Amanda Todd’s new online friend told her she was “stunning, beautiful, perfect” and convinced her to flash her breasts on her webcam. He later threatened her or he’d share her topless image online with everyone she knows, and that he did. Then the cyberbullying from her peers began. Classmates told her that she should kill herself. Her family moved to a new home, where Todd said she started drinking alcohol and using other drugs. On September 7, 2012, Amanda posted a youtube video titled My story: Struggling, bullying, suicide, self-harm, which showed her using flashcards to tell of her story. On Oct. 10, 2012, Amanda ended her life at her home in Canada. The video went viral after her death with news websites from around the world linking to it.

can someone analyse the disturbing use of Amanda Todd's youtube video cry for help being used in fucking advertisements??

like the technique of cards and the idea that its leading to something.

like : "I've got to tell you something..." and then it's some shit brand.

like I'm sure Amanda was not the first to come up with this idea but also the idea that some corporate out of touch individual seeing it as nothing more than a "viral me-me" would Not surprise me in the slightest.

I think I'm reaching here, or I'd like to think so. I hope I am.

Victim of bullying

            Amanda Todd was a 15-year old Canadian. A stranger online peer pressured her to expose her breasts which she did and he later blackmailed her and told her he would send them to her friends unless she gives him a ‘show’. The perpetrator placed her photos on a paedophile site, which was used for grooming young people into nudity or sexual acts.

            In 2010, police let Todd know that her photo was circulating on the internet and her family moved to a new home. The perpetrator started sending her picture to those at her new school, after this she was bullied and had to change schools.

Todd started chatting to an old male friend who had contacted her and he invited her to his house where they had sex when his girlfriend was on holiday. A week later, the girlfriend and a group of 15 others assaulted her. It was after this she attempted suicide but survived after being rushed to the hospital.

            Her family moved to a different city and Todd received counselling, but the students and the perpetrator continued to bully her which resulted in her suffering from depression.

            She committed suicide at her family home in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada on 10 October 2012. At the end of her life she posted a 9 minute video on YouTube where she used flashcards about how she was bullied and had been physically assaulted.

            Her death gained public and media attention, which brought awareness to cyberbullying, harassment, and her mother, Carol created the Amanda Todd trust, to support anti-bullying education programs.

            A police investigation took place which led them to a man who used the name ‘Aydin C.’ online who had numerous victims in the Netherlands, England and Canada. On his computer they found chat logs and child pornography. Dutch-Turkish man, Aydin Coban showed no remorse and was imprisoned for targeting and harassing around 39 victims online. He was found guilty in 2022 and was sentenced to 13 years in prison. Todd’s mother said that there was more than one person who was involved in her daughter’s harassment and bullying.

I was looking through YouTube videos; upon finding, my EXACT words: "That's Amanda Todd!"I'd heard of her; I think (don't hold me to), but I think I watched her video a long time ago! But majoring in CS now, I'm happy to have watched this.My life's work - my life - is to help and teach and work with adolescent girls/young women. It's a WONDERFUL thing to be able to share yourself with people, and, I find so much joy in girls; and, the best thing I can do about that is to help them and try to make their lives better.She's beautiful! I'm so sorry this happened. </3I sure hope it never happens again to any other girl.

This week it started off in financial literacy class and then in manners and etiquette class and tuned into a sad story! Our goal is to create champions on and off the mat, we discussed the Amanda Todd story and how her story started with “I sat alone in the school cafeteria” and then we got to “nobody cared” And how it ended up as a sad story! I discussed this story with our students because knowing they were fixing to go back into school I wanted them to be mindful of the children around them that were being bullied and would be singled out or left alone on tables during lunch time and how they could make a difference and change someone’s life! Literally someone’s life’s story! How they could positively impact someone just by acknowledging them ! We partner with you to create champions on and off the mat encouraging them to make a difference in someone’s life !
