The Tick (Pilot)
I remember growing up with The Tick cartoon series in the background. That was some wacky fun, and I thought it was tame and inoffensive at least. And then I picked up the comic about two years ago. And it was shocking. It wasn’t like the difference between the cartoon of Ninja Turtles and the black and white comic. It was just the idea that The Tick isn’t a joke from his own perspective. He’s psychotic. Like psychotic in the way I think Bruce Wayne is, expect without the restraint and The Joker on the opposite of the pool saying “This is the line that tells you when you’re too crazy!” Tick, as the comics portray him is a different joke. One that makes you a little nervous when you laugh, and then that’s another layer of humor. Seeing Peter Serafenawitcz in the costume, laughing madly as goons unload every gun in The City on him is more than a little terrifying. Which is why I’m glad he wasn’t the main character.
Arthur is perfectly cast. I was stunned, he gave me everything I wanted to know in his first frame. That’s excellent. Having him as the sane center that everything revolves around is great, because when The Tick appears, we feel a little alienated. Cartoon Tick feels like everything is normal. You see a big blue hero and you accept that that’s what happens every Tuesday. When Tick crashes into Arthur’s life, the world goes off its axis. And Serafenawitcz is a great casting choice too. It’s impossible to beat the sheer mass and voice of Warburton, but Serafenawitcz has been Duane Benzie and Darth Maul. He’s got a voice to match anyone. He seems slim compared to Warburton, but is probably actually taller.
The best difference though is something akin to the Dalton effect. When Warburton smiles, you feel comforted and it’s funny. When this Tick smiles, it’s unnerving. You can feel his psychosis pulling you into the character. I love it. The Fox Kids Tick is the cartoony Pierce Brosnan where everything is sillier than the original and fun as possible. The Warburton Tick is Coo. Guy Sean Connery who just fills the role so well and is friendly and perfect. And now we have a Dalton or a Craig who feels more like the tone of the first comic and hits the character in, what I feel, is the right way. I hope for many episodes to come. This is the show Edlund deserves.
Jean-Claude Van Johnson Pilot Review
Jean-Claude Van Johnson Review - As far as comedy pilots go, this is one of the funniest. #Amazonpilots #JCVD @JCVanJohnson
Jean-Claude Van Damme stars in this humorous take on the serial action TV show, which has the martial arts movie star play himself as retired, but not “Nicolas Cage retired”, from the film industry. However unbeknown to the rest of the world JCVD was never just a movie star, he was one of the worlds best undercover private contractors known as Jean-Claude Van Johnson, but a profession he has…

I just...I’m still high-key pissed about Amazon not picking up The Interestings. From a company perspective, it was never about the best pilot, it was about the most popular one. OF COURSE The Last Tycoon was more popular, given that it stars Matt Bomer, Kelsey Grammar and Lily Collins, respectively. Don’t get me wrong, they’re all wonderful actors, but that pilot, in all it’s melodramatic, clunky dialogue glory, was shit. It did a very poor job of tackling very important subjects.
I’m sick of the entertainment industry pitting the underdog against the high profile and acting like it’s a competition.
No one every stops to ask what’s good anymore. It doesn’t matter if the script is shit and the characters under-developed, just get a bunch of high-profile actors in there and it’ll be fine.
The Interestings never had a chance.

I’m no character designer by any stretch of the imagination, so things like turnarounds are totally alien to me. But since we had a small crew, little time and because I needed reference for the shots I was going to soon board, Caroline and Tom let me do a few costume change designs for the characters we already had turnarounds of, namely Burger with his vest zipped up and covered in mud, and a beaten-up Glenn. The band-aid on the beard was a fun touch.
CLICK HERE TO WATCH “TOASTY TALES”! The pilot will be available for everyone to watch for free on their website for roughly the next month, then after that only Amazon Prime members can watch it, so please check it out, give it a 5-star rating & share it with your friends so we have the chance of it going to a full series! We love these characters and this world so much, we don’t want the fun to end!
