Prince Herneval is such an important character for me. Being a writer, my friends and family were all quick to compare me to Frankelda: the tragic writer who only feels alive through her stories and characters, and I do understand her very well, but the truth is I relate to Herneval.

The prince who is desperate to save his kingdom from ruin, who is ultimately seen as a traitor and casted away by the very people he tried to protect.

It's a story about love and duty and the way, as a hero, you cannot owe yourself to two causes.

SPOILERS AHEAD

The prince contacts Frankelda because he truly believes she can help him to save his kingdom, but instead of taking her stories to use them right away, he wastes time befriending her because he is in love with her.

He brings her into the Topus Terrentus out of duty, then wastes time getting to know her out of love. Then, after the misunderstanding with Procustes, instead of marching into her chamber immediately to clarify the situation and get to work, he gives her space because he cares about her feelings. Only to then allow Procustes to give her a nightmare so she is coerced to stay, because the kingdom needs her. And after that, he repents and spends days looking for her to apologize, while his enemies use that time to take over the kingdom because they have been led to believe he chose a human girl over his own kin.

As Game of Thrones once put it, love is the dead of duty and duty is the dead of love. In prioritising his kingdom, he betrays his lover. In prioritising his lover, he betrays his kingdom.

So in his desperation to help, the hero becomes the villain and the lover becomes the traitor. It is a tragedy through and through.
