Cécile Rey is a wealthy free woman of color and aspiring singer in New Orleans, and Marie-Grace Gardner, her best friend, is the daughter of a doctor and an aspiring nurse herself. They have been best friends for ten years and are now 20 years old, and the once-United States are now caught up in the American Civil War. Together, these friends transcend race and class barriers and work to help the orphans in their city.

Molly McIntire, 1954

Molly was sad to see her friend Emily Bennett return to England after the war, but they promised to see each other each time Emily visited her American aunt. Molly even visited her friend in London a few years later. Inspired by her father’s time as an army doctor, 19-year-old Molly is studying to become a nurse at Northwestern University in Chicago. She keeps in touch with her long-time friends Linda Rinaldi and Susan Shapiro and sees movies with them often.

My grandmother was around the same age as Molly so I used her for inspiration.

Addy Walker, 1875

Aduke “Addy” Walker, 20, lives in Philadelphia, where she advocates tirelessly for Black people’s rights. She often helps her mother out in Ms. Ford’s dress shop. Addy wants to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C. and is currently studying her entrance exam. She wants to be a teacher.

Kirsten Larson, 1864

Kirsten is a Swedish immigrant who made the journey to America as a 9-year-old girl. Now, she is 19 and a schoolteacher in a small town in Minnesota, which gained statehood in 1858 when she was 13. Kirsten excels at helping other Scandinavian immigrant children learn English.

( I kept Kirsten’s signature color scheme— her look hasn’t evolved much from when she was a child. Kirsten was my first and favorite AG doll. )

Josefina Montoya, 1834

Maria Josefina Montoya Romero, now 19 years old, is a curadora, or healer, in her native Santa Fe, which is still part of Mexico. She connects with the many Americans who travel the Santa Fe trail to trade with Mexico. Josefina has no interest in marriage, unlike her older sisters, but she is a loving aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
