Antonio’s head snapped up every time the bell on the door jingled, but it had been three weeks since the messy-haired blond walked through it.

This time was no different.

He gave the usual greeting and showed the couple to their table, taking down their drink order, and returning to the server station. Antonio knew he was getting his hopes up, Alfred had even said he was moving and it would be the last time they would see each other.

But his heart still fluttered with hope at the sound of the bell.

The night was a slow one, customers coming and going so infrequently that Antonio found himself with an unusually large amount of free time. After jumping at the bell for the fifth time that night, he went into the kitchen where it was easier to breathe.

Twenty minutes later, having done nothing except annoy the cook, Antonio went to find the manager and ask to leave early since business was so slow. Before the words could escape his mouth, Emma stuck her head an and said, “Toni, you have a table.”

“No, I think I’m done for the night, thank you though.”

“You’ll want this one, Toni. Trust me.” And with a wink, Emma disappeared.

With a sigh, Antonio told the manager he would talk to her later and went back into the dining room. Lips curled into a smile, Emma pointed to a far table in the corner.

His heart pounded against his ribs at the sight of the person there. The tall, bespectacled man cracked a grin and let out his signature laugh. “There you are! I was worried you had already left.”

Antonio stood there for a moment, mouth agape. “I-I thought you moved?”

“I did. But I came back”–Alfred stood up and reached in his pocket–”to give you this.” He handed Antonio a piece of paper with a phone number on it. “And this too.” Alfred leaned in and gently pecked Antonio’s lips.

Antonio touched his mouth in awe. He felt overwhelmed and was sure he was turning bright red as well. “You came back,” he murmured. “You came back… for me.” He wrapped Alfred in an embrace, never wanting him to leave again.

“No matter how far I go, I’ll always come back.”
