Epitaph for an Enemy
Anthologia Palatina 11.226 = Ammianus (2nd cent. CE?) Wretched Nearchus, may the dirt Lie light upon you in the earth - So that the dogs may have no trouble Dragging your corpse into the light! Εἴη σοι κατὰ γῆς κούφη κόνις, οἰκτρὲ Νέαρχε, ὄφρα σε ῥηιδίως ἐξερύσωσι κύνες.
The Grave of Rubens and His Family After Being Opened in 1855, Hendrik Frans Schaefels, 1855
"Those who are unacquainted with ancient records say that today the state has never been more overshadowed by such a dark cloud of peril, but they are deceived by the horror of the recent troubles which have overwhelmed them. For if they study earlier times or those which have recently passed, they will learn quickly that such dire disturbances have often happened."
(Ammianus, Res Gestae 31.5.11)
We know little of the burial rites of the ancient people who lived east of the carpathian basin. (Iazyges, dacians and Roxolani) They probably were probably similar to the #sarmatian - #alanic population of the eurasian steppes and of the scythians. . The makeup of this Sarmatian pantheon is unknown but if we are to assume they held beliefs to thier ancestors there may have been seven #gods. . Perhaps it was about one of the gods of this pantheon that #Ammianus (31.2.23) wrote, comparing him to the Roman #Mars and relating that the #Alani worshiped him in the form of an unsheathed #sword driven into the ground. . This #ritual may be interpreted as the erection of the #axismundi which joins the world of people with the world of the gods. This driving of the sword into the dirt certainly suits a nomadic people. The #scythians practised a similar ritual but used an altar. . This act could well have been to send the spirits of the fallen safely into the afterlife, rather than allowing the spirit to get trapped or linger in the middle world. .

Light lie the earth, Nearchus, on thy clay, That so the dogs may easier find their prey.
