Clock out

On Saturday evening I said to Sharon, "Oh yeah - we have to remember to set our clocks back tonight."

Then it occurred to me; "What clocks?" With our range on the blink, the only clock in the house that won't reset itself is on our microwave oven

Our cell phones, Fitbits and laptops - our go-to timepieces these days - will take care of themselves.

Surely in the near future "springing ahead" and "falling back" manually will be a thing of the past.

As for "setting back the hands of time," we don't even own an analog clock.

I’ve always thought it was a little odd the whole clock thing with will. Just cause, autistic people often can’t or have a difficult time reading analog clocks. Like I’m completely unable to read them. If i tried to draw a clock with a specific time on it I would have no idea how to do it correctly. Obviously I get why it was a perfect choice for what they were portraying and I do think it was beautiful. Just that an autistic guy frequently drawing an analog clock is kinda funny to me

Dyspraxia vs Clocks

So three years before having a diagnosis of any kind, I had an internship at a museum as an undergrad. On this particular day, I was working as a tour guide, but my phone was dead so someone let me borrow this watch of theirs that was on a necklace.

So I went about my tour, stopping at various places and all the while keeping an eye on my time. I thought I was making excellent time. I was immensely proud of myself for finally conquering the evil analog clock that has plagued me since kindergarden.

Unfortunately, when I arrived back at the tour group, I discovered I was not 5 minutes early as I thought, but rather 25 min behind. How the hell I managed to do that, I haven't the faintest idea.

I have not used an analog clock since.

An analog clock with a non-functioning motor or drive mechanism is right twice a day.

An analog clock with a non-functioning motor or drive mechanism is wrong the rest of the time.

A properly functioning analog clock that is set to the exact right time will always be correct.

A properly functioning analog clock that is set to the wrong time will be wrong all the time.

A properly functioning analog clock that is set to almost the right time will reflect reality more accurately than an analog clock with a non-functioning motor or drive mechanism, even if the former is never fully accurate and the latter can claim two accuracies a day.

And all that assumes we're talking about a clock that never runs down or needs new batteries, on a planet that doesn't slow or speed up its rotation over the eons, with an hour hand that goes around twice a day, and not one of the 24-hour clocks with an hour hand that only goes around once a day, or even a single-hand clock with the motor speed set to match the phases of the moon.

On the other hand, if it's a broken standard 12-hour clock, but has a month and/or date mechanism, it's only right twice a year... Or twice every four years, approximately, if it's set to February 29th. Or never right, if it's set to February 30th.

I don't know why I wrote this, other than to get it out of my head. Now it's in yours.
