A Change of Heart

Notes: Something I wrote very quickly and set during the S1 finale, except Mike decides not to go back East after all… Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Gracelanders and Pike shippers! This is also for thedepartedfairy as an extra get-well-soon gift. 

It didn’t hit Mike until he was already at LAX, past the security line and at his gate, staring at the clock while he sat waiting for his flight to board. He realized he was watching the seconds tick by with dread rather than anticipation. This isn’t right.

He got up to walk around, as if by doing so, he could also outdistance himself from his unpleasant thoughts.

Working in DC was his dream. It was only a plane ride away from being within his grasp. He should be elated. He had been elated. 

Briggs’ voice echoed in his head. Trust your gut.

Warren drew in a deep breath as he pulled out his phone and made a call. “Sir? This is Mike Warren. I won’t be joining you in Washington. At all.”

He returned to Graceland with his suitcase—Thank God he had decided not to check it at the airport—and shaded the sun from his eyes as he looked up the beach house’s long flight of stairs. He could make out Paige at the top, her back to him as she looked up at the doorway.

“What are you doing?” he called as he trudged up the steps with his luggage.

She turned and waved down at him, and he spotted something green in her hand before she began descending to meet him. “You’re back? What happened? Your flight got delayed?”

“No,” he said, stopping as Paige met him halfway along the stairs. “I’m just back. For good this time. I decided not to go to DC.”

“Mike. I don’t know what to say. I mean, what made you change your mind?”

“Let’s just say I found what I was looking for when I least expected it.”

“Well, I’m glad you’re staying.” She started to fiddle with the greenery she held in her hands, making him squint at it.

“Is that mistletoe?”

“Uh, yeah. Johnny wanted to do this whole ‘Christmas in July’ thing.”

“But it’s August.”

“I know,” she said with a laugh. “I don’t get it either. But, it’s Johnny, you know?”

“Yeah.” A soft smile crossed his face as he thought of Tuturro’s childlike excitement.

Arkin cleared her throat. “So, seeing as how it’s Christmas, I guess we should follow tradition.” She held the sprig of mistletoe over her head, an innocent look on her face.   

“With jobs as crazy as ours, I would be more than happy to do something traditional.” He began to lean down to kiss her, but Paige was quicker and met his lips first.

“Now, we’re even,” she whispered as she pulled away. “Merry Christmas, Mike.”

He rested his forehead against hers, feeling the coolness of the ocean’s spray against his cheek and the warm California sun beating down onto his back. It felt so different from Quantico or the East Coast, but he knew it was home. “Merry Christmas, Paige.”
