I do wanna share some thoughts myself - probably beating a dead horse cause this conversation happened MONTHHHS ago. And I am not trying to stir up drama I swear, this is literally just me thinking out loud
But I would like to talk about some peculiar writing choices - I’ll focus on sdra since that’s my current hyperfixation. If you want to add to the convo I’d love it! But plz keep it civil - any rude or disrespectful comments will be deleted. - this is manly about relationships between characters and some questionable dynamics.
ALSO THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SDRA S1-2 UNDER THE CUT
1) The essential queer “bait” of Pyke and Rett.
I remember when Ophelia was introduced people’s jaws literally hit the fucking ground. Mine included. I remember people being a little bit upset, mainly cause there was the relationship assumption with Pyke and Rett given that they had made some light jokes about it in the past, and that was fine, Pyke’s greed can be biblical and Retts can be one sided, but holy shit when Richie talked about Retts past with love and mentioned a WOMAN I can honestly admit I was shocked. At no point , overture OR anthem has it been implied that Rett will seek out women, let alone a relationship. (The glitz room dosent count he was literally playing a pimp persona)
Richie has an unfortunate knack for writing the most gayest people, and then absolutely WHIFFING IT. Kremy is also included but ive never really cared much about witchlight sorry guys (which is a whole conversation regarding Nikie btw, because i believe it was said somewhere that she was excited to end witchlight so that she can finally dm a “serious campaign” which really hurts :(( )
With how Pyke and Rett, overture and Anthem, it’s basically insane that they gave us that, and not to mention the Pykephelia kiss at the end of the episode and season 1. And I think Pykephelia is great! Go kiss your irl wife man!! But the literal subtexts that we’ve been constantly fed, for fucks sake the SHOOCHARU ANIMATION. I’m a firm believer that it dosent need to be canon for you to like or even enjoy the ship, but with what Richie and Andy have fed us, ffs even Mace. It’s annoying.
2) Kopix.
Kopix is CONSTANTLY CONSTANTLY CONSTANTLY Hinted at, Nikie drops it by NAME in season 2. They’ve kissed, 3 whole times, but it’s teetering in a downward slope of “will they won’t they” but I hope and pray that Nikie will have at least enough sense to not make it joke, along with Mikey who we know does enjoy a wee bit of shipping (Skrimbos)
One complaint I do have about Kos character is that she’s written a little bit too much into the “mean lesbian” trope, not that that’s wrong persay, but it’s a common trope that lesbians are written into. A heterosexual conforming of the “strong butch wife” who does all the protecting and the “weak and kind fem”.
3) Anatra and Rex
Oh boy where do I even start with this one.
Listen, it’s fine, Rex fucked the dons wife heehee hoohoo, but what pissed me off the most is how that’s ALL Anatra is reduced to the entire campaign. The sex joke. A tragic character who, as seen near the end, has caked up certain spots of makeup on her face which implies literal physical abuse. And what’s her reward for escaping? For finally leaving her abusive husband? A bomb. She literally blows the fuck up. And then, post mortem, REX STILL CRACKS JOKES. ALL OF THEM DO.
It just frustrates me that we have this abuse victim to, yes, she’s married to a shitty person but believe it or not even if she’s shitty herself I don’t think they deserve domestic abuse. Her being reduced to this living blackmail is really fucked. This is I think Maces writing choice I’m THE most upset with. Fuck the reset, fuck the retcons, It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
And a little bit of an add on, Rex literally flirting with Ko who we know genuinely just cracks women, is really weird ngl????
4) Ziggy and Megadestroryer
Okay. This is just a side note to say, I am frightened on where they’re gonna take this, because this could be the adventures of loser boy and girl failure, or it’s the literal “straight ship canon now we’ll think about Kopix later”
Idfk . Just my thought - please do not harass any of the avantris members btw! However feel free to bring up these points to them in a civil manner especially if you’re concerned- just don’t be nasty.
I think to have a good fandom circle, it can’t just be a positive feedback loop. If we do have criticism and such, it allows for a healthy environment! If any of you have stuff to add onto this I would LOVEE to see it.
