There’s been some discourse going around about Greek mythology and fanfiction, as in some tumblrites are equating Greek mythology to fanfiction. I was wondering if you’d seen the discourse, and if so, your thoughts on it, if you feel like sharing them? It seems like something anyone who isn’t Greek shouldn’t touch on, so I figured I’d ask someone who is Greek!

I had seen this discourse some time ago, sad to know it goes around again. I haven’t made a post about it but I remember ranting about it in a reblog that I can’t find now either.

I don’t have much to say on the matter because I feel that if I need to explain to somebody that fanfiction and mythology are different things, this is already a lost cause. Besides, I don’t think people can’t genuinely tell the difference. I believe they don’t want to listen to and understand what we explain to them very clearly because they don’t want to change how liberally they interact with the mythology.

As a Greek, I unfortunately don’t feel comfortable with most of the #greek_mythology posts I see in this site, hence I also reblog so few of them. There are many things that annoy me:

The entitlement of people of entirely different backgrounds that they have the right to judge, change and correct things perceived as mistakes (!) in the Greek mythology. (What is a mistake in a myth?) In fact, I wouldn’t accept such an entitlement even by Greeks let alone people who otherwise know nothing about Greece.

The illogical equation of an ancient civilisation with modern societies and the consequent demand to reinvent Greek Mythology with the naive expectation that this will somehow help change the contemporary world towards the better.

Mixing the ancient culture with modern elements from different countries that is usually done in a very poor taste.

Degrading the mythology beyond belief, such as to even inspire trash chat posts on Tumblr. They are not even funny, after all.

Honestly, the main reason that people should not feel entitled to modify relentlessly Greek myths is that it is frankly pointless. Myths are a collection of beliefs ancient people had with which they tried to interpret the mysteries of nature and spirituality. It does not matter if Sarah now thinks Persephone was mistreated or Zeus should be portrayed as a faithful husband in that new retelling from a dude in Australia. Nothing will change in 3000 year old myths because of what Sarah thinks and in the long run nobody will remember it either. Because it doesn’t matter anymore.

Apparently people don’t understand that studying mythology is vital to history. Not because the myths hold truth in them but because it is a source of information about the common beliefs and religious practices of ancient cultures. In this sense, they do provide truth. Alter the myths of a civilisation or present them through your own personal and too modern perspective and you essentially disturb others’ perception of the civilisation itself.

You won’t find me discuss extensively GM so-called fanfiction or pop culture inspired by the Greek mythology. I am genuinely disinterested in it and I don’t know shit about Percy or CEO Hades. No offence to fans, these concepts border on ridiculous for me.
