The EcoMuseum of Lamezia Terme, Calabria, Italy

The EcoMuseum of Lamezia Terme is a small ethnographic museum established over the years by the teacher Umberto Zaffina. The ecomuseum reconstructs an ecosystem, the ancient Calabrian house.

The teacher collected objects of domestic use, tools of various types of work, from artisanship to farmers. In one room there are also some silkworm cocoons in a heather bush brunch and the typical loom, which was omnipresent in every Calabrian house. The art of weaving has always had strong symbolic and social values, especially within the female universe.

The house was famously used in the 1992 movie “L’Amant” (“The Lover”) based on the novel of the same name by French author Marguerite Duras, directed by Jean Jacques Annaud, telling the story of a young Marguerite Duras and her lover Huynh Thuy Le, set during Indochina times." In the houses of ancient Herculaneum Traveling along the lower 4th cardo, which reaches the sea from the Decumano maximum, we come to the Casa del Tramezzo made of wood, an elegant domus built around the 1st century. BC, which takes its name from the discovery of a partition, that is a sort of folding door in charred wood that separated the atrium from the tablinum. The latter is characterized by doors equipped with rings and bronze supports in the shape of a ship's prow intended to house the oil lamps, as Petronius tells us when speaking of the House of Trimalchione. The partition we see is the only archeologically known specimen so far. In the photo we see the atrium of the house, decorated with frescoes with a red, black and ocher background and a refined earthenware floor dotted with white tiles. In the center stands a marble impluvium decorated with a mosaic that incorporates geometric motifs and a fountain. The valley decorated with dog-headed drips is also preserved. Next to the tub we also see an elegant marble table with lion-footed ends. Various rooms open onto the atrium, including the cubicola (bedroom), the tablinum (room located between the atrium and the peristyle with functions that change over time), the oecus (reception room) and the peristyle. The house came to light between 1927 and 1933 during the excavations conducted by Amedeo Maiuri.
