Different Path Future Rambles

this might not make it in, it's just a thought that's rolling around in my head

"Well," Viren said coldly, eyeing the obstacles to his descent into the dragon's nest. "Isn't this a familiar scene? You're a bit younger than the other one." This snide remark was directed at Rayla and she felt a sickening jolt as she realized he was referring to her mother. "I admit, your friends gave me more of a fight than theirs did. But this will end the same way."

"No," Runaan said coolly, bow raised already. "It won't."

Rayla lunged in time with the release of his arrow, pincering Viren between them as her eyes burned. She couldn't afford to let the tears cloud her vision.

He would not get past her.

To Runaan's surprise, Viren didn't fend him off with the same whirling wind spell he had used to throw Rayla back a moment before. Instead, he spun himself and swung his staff like a melee weapon, striking for Runaan's head. He hadn't anticipated that, and his arms felt somehow leaden as he grew closer - midair, unable to back out of the lunge, realizing the mage was at the center of some field of protective magic - and he could only watch as the staff flew toward his head.

He managed to move enough that it didn't strike him squarely in the skull, but it felt like only the smallest of mercies as it caught squarely in his left horn. His head was jerked to the side - at full speed once again - and his body followed, a spasm in his neck down his arm leading to the loss of a blade. The pressure abruptly vanished and all that was left was -

pain

mind-numbing

blinding

pain.

He was barely aware of hitting the ground, crumpling to the stone as his hair was quickly soaked.

Distantly, he heard Rayla scream.

"Dad!"

but . . . as for an antagonist . . . Peeta’s brothers and mom suck (lol, such humor) but they’re not quite antagonist material . . . I mean Snow is the obvious choice (down to the smell of blood around his mouth) but part of me wants to stray away from the obvious choice . . . my gut is saying Coin might be a really fun antagonist . . . a vicious vampire hunter

though I could possibly be persuaded into well meaning vampire hunter Gale who has a change of heart and turns against Coin . . . ooohhhhh . . . oh I really like that idea
