Day 14 - Black Frost

Ah, Black Frost. My personal favorite demon in the entire series. A demon that has carried me through many a game, been the saving grace against many bosses, protected me from many game overs… he needs no introduction, being one of the most iconic demons in the whole series! However, unfortunately, he doesn’t have much backstory, mostly known for his gameplay prowess… or so you’d think. 

Black Frost is a rare phenomenon in the SMT world, in which a Jack Frost suddenly remembers his true nature as a demon and grows a lust for power. As a result of this, he grows cruel, grows in size, and is tinted a stark black and purple, as well as gaining a resistance to flame on top of ice. Black Frost is a defensive powerhouse in most games, one that has a high amount of physical strength on top of magic and luck. 

Black Frost’s true origin is actually as simple as a pun. The japanese name for Jack Frost, ジャックフロスト, which is read ‘Jakku Furosuto’, is pronounced in much the same way as the Japanese word for evil, 邪悪, is written in kanji, being pronounced ‘ja'aku.’ A more direct translation of Black Frost’s name would be something like ‘Evil Frost,’ but the localizers made a good call in translating the pun to be associated with Black, referencing his color palette and a color typically associated with death or evil.
