I genuinely think it’s important for creators on the web to make content that they know no one except for them will care about. Creating fan content and especially creating content that has a high likelihood of positive reception and engagement is also awesome—it very much is rewarding and encouraging and a powerful incentive that can make creating fun and a source of joy—but I think it is also good for your health to make stuff that you know, as you put hours into it, probably no one is going to engage with.
And on the one hand I think it’s good bc it makes it easier to not get engagement/interaction on fandom/more popular content. Like, okay my drawing of X character only got one like or whatever...oh well, I can brush that off more easily if I have practice with other content.
But also bc the lines between audiences and creators get really wobbly online and I think making shit just for yourself also makes you better able to not feel a sense of obligation to random strangers on the internet. Imo it’s surprisingly easy to get drawn into this cycle of making content -> get a positive reaction -> want more positive engagement -> try to make content to trigger that engagement -> feel obligated to make certain kinds of content that will more likely lead to positive engagement rather than negative
and I think making content just for yourself (whether it’s fandom-related or original content or w/e) helps you broaden your focus so that it more fully encompasses what brings you joy and satisfaction which better sets you up for dealing with negative reactions or demands on your content by being like “Bruh this is my (internet) house and you are a guest. If you don’t like it, you are free to leave” rather than feeling more personally impacted/hurt/guilty for those reactions
