Okay I’m a comic book nerd, I need to gush over this.

[ORV Webtoon, Episode 11]

This is brilliant. Absolutely genius and I love it.

It makes more sense with the context of the novel, but it’s executed MUCH better in the webtoon and I adore it.

We know from the novel that the panels that appear in front of the incarnations aren’t just a visible panel, but they are also read “aloud” in the incarnations’ heads. It’s the voices in their head. They tried to show this in the webtoon by adding the “DING!” sound effect and Sangah mentions it every now and then, but it doesn’t really make sense.

Without that context (and I see this a lot in fanfics that either don’t know and/or don’t remember that the panels are read “aloud” to the incarnation), it’s misunderstood that that panels appear in is entirety and the incarnation has to take the time to read it.

Now. Why is this screenshot so good? Well. Let me just tell you.

With the context of the panels being read aloud, this is just cinematic at this point. Imagine this:

The panel is reading out information Dokja already knows. He knows everything about this man. And yet he checks anyways, his final confirmation that this is really happening, that this is not a dream.

The panel appears in front of him. He’s watching the words type out as the voice in his head just confirms this horrid reality. It’s literally being spelled out for him. He’s scanning the information for anything that can help him, anything that can keep him alive.

Then a hand shoots out of the panel, cutting off not only the words but the sounds as Dokja’s concentration snaps and a hand is holding him by the neck over a bridge. His little bubble of information has been burst and he’s been pulled back into reality.

That is the mastery of this scene.

In the novel, it doesn’t work as well. It just trails off.

There’s no sudden cut off. No surprise.

Sometimes there are things only a visual storyteller can do. And sometimes there are things that can only work in a text based story. Neither are wrong.

But damn was this scene right.

Kayden Motherfucking Break chose Jiwoo because Jiwoo helped him.

And you might ask, funky, yes we all know that, why are you saying this?

Well, dear fellow readers, you don't understand my vision.

Kayden wanted to get stronger, but here comes this kid, who to his knowledge is a w e a k l i n g that helps a cat because he can't stand other people suffering.

Kayden saw Jiwoo at a disadvantage fight for a cat, one that wasn't even his pet. It was a stray that he had fed a few times.

He saw Jiwoo fight for this cat. He saw him get hurt. he saw this reckless kid who just wanted to protect a cat be put in a VERY dangerous situation. What if Kayden saw himself in Jiwoo.

What if Kayden started fighting and gaining power because he wanted to protect something or someone. What if he wanted someone to protect him, and he sees Jiwoo as a way to protect Kaydens "younger self?" What if HE wanted to protect Jiwoo because he wanted to help this kid who very clearly has no idea what he has gotten himself into, so he sticks by him so he could protect Jiwoo in a way he wished to be protected.

Kayden is a very lonely person and Jiwoo is too, but together they help each other by being there for each other. Kayden helps Jiwoo because he has someone to look for protection, and no shade on Jiwoos mom but, she wasn't there. She wasn't there to protect Jiwoo from bullies or loneliness. So Kayden, having his back, protecting him from people that Jiwoo wouldn't be able to defeat otherwise, helps Jiwoo have a dad. Or at least a parental figure.

Jiwoo helps Kayden in the way that he gives him a purpose. Kaydens main purpose before was to become strong and just fight people, and that is a very lonely path to take. Taking care of Jiwoo, having Jiwoos well being in the forefront, helped Kayden not be alone. Kayden has someone to take care of, someone that has no expectations for him, and someone that is so very reckless. Kayden can start to see that the world is much bigger than being the strongest, he has someone that needs his care. And I don't mean this in a way that is like, oh poor Jiwoo, my little meow meow, I mean this in a way that Jiwoo is still a teenager. Teenagers, no offense, still need love and care from adults. Teenagers need someone that will help them be better people. And that ladies and gentlemen is my point.

Jiwoo helps Kayden become a better person.

And Kayden helps Jiwoo be a stronger person.

Boom. Mic drop.

I don’t get why when people draw girls in pajamas they make them wear really tight fitting tank tops with straps. They’re so uncomfortable esp when my boobs got bigger. These girls have like b cups at least how do they sleep that?
