This is some unexpected and impressive stuff!  =D

Let’s check out YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN, a Canadian multi-ethnic band that I would describe as tribal-prog-rock with female vocals. (Formed in Montreal, now based in Toronto). The songs have some heavy riffing (and wild soloing) from the guitars, the drummer & keyboardist bring in the prog complexity, and the vocal / rhythmic approach is where the tribal feeling emerges.  Man, I would love to see this unit and Taiwan’s Prairie WWWW / 落差草原 WWWW tour together or collaborate!  

The regular band is *Alaska B (潘思薇)-drums/elec. drums/keys/electronics/programming/vocals/art, Ange Loft-vocals/staging/costume, *Brendan Swanson-keyboards, Joanna Delos Reyes-vocals/gongs/guitar, Hiroki Tanaka-guitar, and Brandon Lim-bass. Aylwin Lo is credited with design/production. They regularly include percussion/instrumentation by Kat & Katrina Estacio from the Filipina ‘all-female Kulintang ensemble’ **Pantayo. (Kulintang - Wikipedia). 

*I think Alaska B & Brendan might be siblings, according to this post  by Brendan.

By the way, this is the full-set clip from the April 13th Audiotree Live session, but there are no interview segments, they just go from song to song. There wasn’t even a host to introduce the band. o.0  Anyway, I urge you to let the full set play through, you’re gonna hear some intense and exciting music!  There is an individual song playlist as well HERE.

Ange Loft is a member of Canadian No-Wave supergroup Yamantaka//SonicTitan.

She spoke with me on Wed, Jan 23, 2013 about Idle No More and how it is catalyzed and sustained by women, youth, knowledge-sharing, and "peeling onions in the dark." 

The 26-minute interview (edited from a 48-minute original) aired today (Jan 30, 2013) on CKUT's Wednesday Morning After.

Ange Loft is an artist and member of Yamantaka//SonicTitan. She hails from Kahnawake Nation outside of Montréal and is the instigator of the Idle No More Documentary Performance Project, an oral digital archive about the movement which she sees as intricately catalyzed by working mothers, older women, and youth involved in the struggle for First Nations justice. Writer and queer activist Jordan Arseneault (thedutymyth, SéroSyndicat, It Could Get Worse) reached her via telephone at her home in Toronto on Jan 21 to talk about what she calls the "vibration behind this movement" and how youth, women, and knowledge-sharing are central to its power and expression.

I'm in the 2qtpoc art show showing prints of my We Don't Need Another Hero series, alongside a line-up of incredible 2QTPOC artists including Ange Loft, Leroi Newbold, Kesso Saulnier, Walter K. Scott and Adee Roberson. Runs from August 10th to 18th at articule, 262 Fairmount W/O, Montréal.

Textaqueen’s live performances include narrated slide shows of their portraits, engaging the audience with anecdotes related to their drawing process and the talents of their subjects.

AGIR is an association whose main purpose is to develop and provide services, resources and advocacy for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) refugee claimants, refugees, immigrants and newcomers with no status within the Montreal-area. agir-qc.info

GLAM is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run group founded in 1993 as a support/social/activist group for self-identified queer, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, gender queer, and intersex Asians living in Montréal. Our mission is to help such individuals in Montréal understand and deal with their sexuality by providing them with a safe, comfortable, and empathetic environment in which they can make new friends, share personal experiences, and feel like they are part of a community.
