There are about six different categories of Demon!Shane that all fics with Demon!Shane fall under:

Loki but American: trickster, not really there to do any harm, no misunderstood puppy dog but no irredeemable eldritch abomination either.

Satan Incarnate: for some reason, behind the plaid shirts lies the ultimate villain. Usually depicted as doing Unsolved just to f*ck with Ryan.

Smol (but tall) Bean: how this version earned his pitchfork is completely unknown. He’s sweet, emotional, and probably overprotective.

Cookie Cutter: it’s just normal Shane, but someone copied and pasted some horns and a devil’s tail on.

Mistaken Identity: not actually a demon. Could be a fae, daemon, or some other supernatural being, but not quite a demon. Still being listed here because those fics are still tagged Demon!Shane usually.

Demon? God? Who knows?!: this version specifically is when Shane is so freaking old that it’s never specified wether or not he’s an eldritch god, a fallen angel, a corrupted soul, or something that’s been alive since the universe began.

oH SHOOT- ABOUT THAT ANGEL ASK!! Belief holds Power!! If Shane is a high ranking angel, and if he truly /believes/ these demons are whimps, then in some ways, they are. Maybe high ranking angels sent him down to earth to lessen Ryan's belief in the paranormal because it threatened to make demons and ghosts strong enough to concern the humans and angels in the area!!

YES! 

Ryan and his little show suddenly making people start to believe a little bit more as it goes on, Heaven can’t have that happening and so they send Shane early on before it happens so he can befriend Ryan and stop him from believing.

At first, Shane does an excellent job and he is even a bit mean to Ryan when both are interns, but slowly, he starts to actually know him and is fascinated by the way Ryan sees the world and how strong his faith is. It’s intoxicating, and it attracts Shane to him so bad,he can’t help but start becoming used to this boy, and this air, and this food, and these eyes that can see so many things he never saw before in spite of have seen everything from above before.

If he stops responding to Heaven’s calls and doing less reports, he excuses it as not having much progress or even just being busy because his human life has become into a full adult that has reponsibilities, and he can’t aford to blow his facade.

There is so much he doesn’t know about humans and rituals, and feelings, and ways to have fun, and what fun is like. Maybe they shouldn’t have sent one of their most curious angels for this job, or maybe he was chosen exactly because of that, because he would blend in with the humans pretty well in spite of his oddish behavior.

When Shane realizes Ryan’s belief have starting to shift, though, he panics. Because if Ryan stops believing, his work ir done and he will be reassigned to another task, he won’t be able to see Ryan every day at the office, go on trips with him, and to Disneyland, or watch movies together.

He doesn’t want to stop seeing their other friends either, even the family he has formed with the other lower rank angels that are the Madejs, or not being able to take care of Obi and have movie nights with his witchy roommate Sara. 

If he allows from time to time for things to happen, ignores evidence in spite of Ryan’s desperation and annoyance, dismisses as much as he can’t, he hopes they don’t notice downstairs. He hopes they never, ever notice how he knows his own aura is changing and how dangerous that can be for an angel that wants.

Comment: A curious take on the Angel!Shane AU that gives a a chance to see Ryan’s journey into understanding and accepting himself. His internalized homophobia gets solved in time and we get to see him have development by the end of the story. Plus points for that also curious ending.
