For a second he sees the culprit out of the corner of his eye, Tim Shepard, standing in the threshold with a gaping smile across his neck, orange jumpsuit stained with red that's poured down from the lethal wound.
Ponyboy takes a deep breath as Tim disappears between a blink and the next, his presence heavy over the house. Ponyboy can feel his sharp gaze, almost daring him to come closer. There's a strong tug against the back of his jacket that makes him stumble back a few steps away from the property line.
Two-Bit has frozen in his tracks and is now eyeing the house with a wariness he'd picked up the last time they'd worked a job together; he'd held quite a bit of skepticality about the paranormal all the way up until he had to ditch his position to drag Ponyboy two blocks over while he bled from his ears because his client had lied.
"What is it?" Two-Bit sounds uncharacteristically serious, he's lost all of the playful edge he usually fights to keep. Which isn't a surprise considering he couldn't stop talking about his niece and nephew who lived in this house. Keeping them and their mother safe would be the jokesters top priority.
"I'm gonna have to find somewhere else to stay. Tim's got a grudge that seems to have passed to me." Ponyboy's hand smdarts up to the saint christophers pendant hanging around his neck the same time realization dawns in Two-Bit's eyes.
There's another harsh tug and Ponyboy takes a few more steps back as Tim's residual ghost attempts to deter him again. Two-Bit's eyes darting between the house and Ponyboy with an odd look in his eye and a growing grin.
"Do you need a ride? It's getting late, Socs ain't much of a problem but who knows how many dead hoods will give you trouble these days."
Ponyboy can see the excitement in Two-Bit's body language, he's rocking on his heels and his gaze keeps darting to the front door, he was probably dying to see those kids and his girlfriend after a long day.
"Nah, I can make my own way. I wanted to visit Johnny anyway. You make sure Angela knows her brother is protecting her, won't you?"
Wistful is something Ponyboy had never seen on Two-Bit before, but that's the only way he can describe Two-Bit's smile as he bid goodbyes. "I'll see you tomorrow? At the funeral? We'll get something to eat after."
Ponyboy nods, watching his old friend disappear behind the front door before setting off for Buck's. The old cowboy still owed him and would probably let him stay in Dallas's old room again. The thought doesn't make Ponyboy's chest as tight as it once did, not with the wind at his back and the clattering of rocks and cans that are almost kicked away from him absently.
