Ghost headcanons
Hello! I hope it’s okay if I share this huge pile of headcanons with you. I have a thing for Undertale’s ghosts, they’re fascinating and cute. Sorry if my English sounds weird, it’s not my native language.
First of all, no one knows what ghosts fundamentally are, not even ghosts themselves. Dead monsters? Dead humans? Dead snails? Manifestations of ancient shards of monster souls AND human souls combined with marshmallows? (Because ghosts look like marshmallows. But I don’t know where the whole “shards of souls” thing came from.)
No one knows how ghosts actually come to existence, either. They don’t reproduce. At least, that hasn’t happened before.
I subscribe to the fanon that incorporeal ghosts have tiny nub hands. Their bodies don’t have anything besides those and faces though. Also, ghosts are all light-colored.
Ghosts don’t need to eat to stay alive because they’re immortal (unless they become corporeal). Eating ghost food gives ghosts the ability to touch the physical world which enables them to e.g. actually use objects (like Napstablook using their computer) instead of just phasing through them. (I haven’t the slightest idea how ghost food would have a property like that but one day I was just thinking about why ghosts eat food if they’re immortal. And, um, then this random thing came to me.)
Speaking of touching, incorporeal ghosts have a weak sense of touch - when they touch or phase through something, they can feel that it is there but specific feelings like texture or temperature are very, very, faint to them. The only thing they can really feel is other incorporeal ghosts. When ghosts become corporeal their sense of touch heightens, usually to what we would call an average level or sometimes higher. Imagine how astonishing it must be for them!
A lot of newly corporeal ghosts are very excited about all the new sensations, wanting to touch everything. Others get sensory overload, but most ghosts who suffer from it manage to overcome it eventually.
And ghosts have to get used to feelings like pain and itching too.
In general, it takes some time for ghosts to get used to feeling everything, maybe a few months or sometimes just weeks. Some of them adjust quicker, some slower, but it happens eventually.
But living as a corporeal being is scary, too, when a ghost realises that they have become/will become mortal. But most ghosts believe that life is fuller when you’re corporeal (which is why we hear from Mad Dummy that all ghosts want a body) and eventually accept the risk of death.
Napstablook has never attempted to become corporeal, though. They’re the exception to the rule. In the post-pacifist time, they’re the only ghost who is neither corporeal nor trying to become like that.
Pretty much all ghosts change their name when getting a new body.
Normally, ghosts can fly. (Obviously.) After becoming corporeal they are able to float in place very close to the ground but nothing more than that. (To me, Mettaton’s battle sprite looks like it’s floating. Mad Dummy’s overworld sprite does this too, even in Genocide run after they’ve become corporeal.)
Mad Dummy manages to become corporeal about a year into living in the surface. They’re happy about it, and from then on they become more content with life and also less likely to throw tantrums over nothing. Their fiery temper still remains though, it’s such an integral part of them.
Also THIS PARTICULAR IDEA IS NOT ACTUALLY MINE AT ALL BUT I WANT TO SPREAD THE WORD. I saw someone on tumblr (unfortunately I can’t find the post anymore) speculate that Mettaton is younger than Napstablook because Napstablook seems to have been around before Toriel hid herself in the ruins; Napstablook mentions about the snail farm’s main customer disappearing. But Mettaton doesn’t seem to have seen any of the fallen humans who fell in the Underground before Frisk since his image of humans is so heavily based on media. So according to this, Mettaton would be younger. ONCE AGAIN, I DID NOT DEDUCE THIS MYSELF, I WOULD LINK THE ORIGINAL POST IF I COULD FIND IT.
